One important thing to keep in mind is allergy. Dubias can give you really nasty allergy and breathe problems. I’ve got it after a couple of years and if I don’t use gasmask when handling Dubias I can barely breathe. So... Do NOT breathe the dust and avoid handling them with your hands!

I adore dubias, I feed the small ones to my green anole and my smallest tarantula and my big tarantula, pacman frog, and leopard gecko like the bigger ones. I've only ever bought them and never actually bred them but I'm planning on trying to breed them soon. I breed superworms and mealworms though but I just find that dubias are easier to deal with and they're great feeders and very docile too. I sometimes will take out the biggest ones and hold them and just admire them because I think they're really neat looking and the full adults are too big for my animals to eat anyway

Excellent content, and beautiful creatures you have. I really enjoy your videos but I do highly recommend you wear if not a respirator at least a dust mask while working with your cockroach populations. Even captive bread cockroaches that have been kept in clean steroid environments can carry parasites and irritants in their fecal matter, this can cause you both chronic and acute lung issues. Consider at least just a dust mask.

Public Service Announcement: Audience please try watching the video and then reading some of the previous comments before posting questions that he has already answered multiple times. For reference: •It is Wheat Bran flakes in the bottom of the tub. Any horse feed store will have it. •He feeds the Dubias greens once a day or every other day depending on how the roaches respond to them. Any greens mix will do. •He also keeps chicken pellets in the tub at all times for the roaches main food source. Any brand chicken pellet will suffice. Thank you and have a nice day. Lol

The humidity Varies inside the tub , in the open end it will be lower than between the egg crates where it will be much higher, its just important to try and keep the substrate and main area dry as possible for the overall health of the colony 👍

@@nicolaipetersen6031what I do is I give them any plant based kitchen scraps (other than citrus and anything with a strong taste or aroma) and mix in some cat food. But that's bc I never have than 100 roaches that I keep as pets and I also have cats so it's just easier than getting something else. IDK if it's reasonable with more roaches tho.

Hey Dave! Looking at starting a fresh colony for my panther chameleon and we have ordered so far 100 medium mixed and 5 female and 10 males. Do you think we should order more to grow a decent size colony or leave it at that considering it only for 1 reptile who eats every other day. Thank you so much for educational video it really helped us set ours up thus far!

You should always aim for more females than males , this colony will be fine , I would not feed any from it until they have established themselves fully 👍

Hey, facing each egg tray so that two similar ends are always touching may help with providing more air flow. Having them stacked (as they would potentially come packaged) may mean that the trays will all lean to the one side and poses a potential risk of some guys getting squished? (Unlikely lol) main point is that you will need more trays and there is less space between the trays if placed according to the method demonstrated in this video. I’m sure it’s totally fine this way, but this tip may be more useful to people who are limited in their supply of egg carton trays.
@daveslittlebeasties
@daveslittlebeasties 3 года назад
Hi Mary, I use them this way becouse the roaches prefer a tight space in which to rest and it also allows the babies somewhere to hide away from the adults .

Hi Dave, Thanks so much for your videos. We're setting up a Dubia colony for the first time, as we switch our Leopard Geckos from crickets to roaches. (Crickets are a bloody nightmare!) We found this video so informative, thank you. So many places we've read, have said that complex roach chow recipes have to be used and that the egg cartons have to be from a specific place (actual egg carton is contaminated with chemicals?) We've got a baker by us and we've been getting our egg carton boards from her, is that ok? Also, many places recommend oranges as hydration source, but our Dubies don't seem to touch it, any thoughts? Thanks again for what you do, a massive help!

I've kept dubias for 5-6 years now (also mainly for leopard geckos as well as a snack for my turtles) and I've never had any issues with the egg cartons I get from, well, eggs lol. If it used for food stuffs for humans I wouldn't worry. 😄 You don't need super fancy roach chow either. I started with a dry special blend, but after a year or two I switched to giving them vegetables, fruits, and chicken feed, and I saw no difference at all in health of the colony or number of offspring produces. It all depends on what is easiest for you, and since my family goes through a lot of greens and there's always some peelings or slightly off vegetable that I just toss in there. Very cost efficient! 😊 Just make sure you use vegetables that are not heavily sprayed with pesticides as this could kill the roaches, and always wash them. As for the oranges, don't worry, just try another vegetable and see if they like those more. Some say citrus fruit boosts their reproduction rate but I haven't noticed that in my colony either. Don't overthink it, you'll be fine! And your geckos will love you. 😍

I use regular egg crates with no problems im sure yours will be fine , I stopped using oranges because of the flies it attracts and only feed greens and chicken pellets now 👍they are very simple to care for , dont over think it and you will be fine 👍

Every other video I've seen says to spray them down and provide a water source, it didn't seem right to me so I'm glad to see the way you do it, very clean and dry. I am considering starting a colony and only have 3 concerns: I read that you can develop allergies handling them too often or breathing in their feces constantly. Where would be a good spot to put them? You are the first I've seen who doesn't use a heat lamp, is that not needed? There are a lot of articles and all of them have said moisture and about 90°. And lastly I had an idea of asking my pet stores in my area if they would be interested in buying dubias from me once I am established. I am always struggling to find them, they only really have babies and a lot of them are dead around here so that's why I think it would be a good idea to offer, but What is a good current price for roaches in the US? Thank you so much for the education 🙏

@@addiegraves3 I’ve got them from using Quaker Oats, as well as the standard wheat bran they come in. Tends to always happen to me. Looks like a sandstorm erupts over night except they’re moving! They say they’re harmless tho. Very annoying but you wouldn’t want them getting into the pantry. Also I’ve learned they can’t really thrive in bright light so if u keep a light bulb over them that seems to halt the mites from doing their thing. If I leave them in dark too long they always seem to erupt

I'm not really into spiders per-se but i really do enjoy your videos and im finding them increasingly fascinating. One question i have is that it seems like you have a huge amount of roaches. I remember in one of your previous videos you mentioned that some of your spiders will only feed a handful of times per year. How do you handle your roach numbers? Won't their numbers get out of control given how few of them you need for feeding spiders?
