A national network of medical examiners was recommended by the Shipman, Mid-Staffordshire and Morecambe Bay public inquiries and the Royal College of Pathologists has long campaigned for their implementation. A non-statutory national system of medical examiners will be introduced from April 2019, however, the development of a medical examiner service, how it should be formed and the staffing required has been devolved to the local level. This video discussion covers requirements in the implementation process identified within pilot sites across the country including staffing, service provision and the organisation of a medical examiner service.
