In this video we will be detailing proper worksite set-up standards. Before setting up the worksite or beginning any tree work, you must wear complete and proper PPE. When arriving at a jobsite, park your vehicle onto firm and even ground, turn on your strobe lights, and then deploy your cones.
Do not park your truck directly on a curb, on newly paved driveways, or on soft ground conditions. If the asphalt is dark black or if the concrete is near white, then you should not park there unless the client or customer is aware of the risk and grants permission. If you must park on soft ground conditions, using mats is required. Although not recommended, you may park your vehicle if needed along the opposing side of traffic if it is necessary for picking up brush.
Refer to the worksite traffic control guide in your truck for exact cone placement requirements but let’s go over one example. If you are coning off a vehicle on a 35mph road, there must be 35 feet between each cone, the last cone should be 70 feet away from the back of the truck, and the tree work signs must be 100 feet away from the truck.
At the bare minimum, there must be at least six traffic cones and two tree work signs even on a slower road. Gently taper off the cones behind the vehicle to allow traffic to smoothly switch to the adjacent lane. As a good tip, an average grapple truck is about 42 feet long, and one large step is about 3 feet long. In any situation, do not place traffic cones in a way that would influence cars to cross a painted center line. If it is necessary, flaggers will be arranged. Also cone off sidewalks if the worksite would be hazardous to passerbys.
Once your vehicle is parked and your cones and signs are in place, let the customer know you have arrived and inspect the work zone. Discuss the basic plan with your crew about how the job will be completed and which trees or shrubs will be serviced. Be cognizant of any property, septic tanks, changes in ground condition, and any yard decorations or furniture that could be hazardous or damaged. Move hazards or damageable goods to a safe place when possible and move them back once the work is completed. Also point out and discuss all electrical wires to ensure you maintain proper clearance at all times. Review the Utility Guide posted in every truck for specific distance requirements based on your line-clearance qualification.
If someone enters the work site without PPE while tree work is happening, you must advise them to either leave the work site until it is safe or to reenter the worksite with the proper PPE. Otherwise, shut down tree work operations until it is safe to resume. The next step is getting hands-on training with your crew leader or production manager.
