Excellent job Budd! You stayed on point and didn't make the video about yourself. Kudos to the explanation of how repeaters work for the non hams in the audience. This may be a good stepping stone to get more people into the hobby (KF4GOM). I haven't finished the video yet but am going to get an SDR for SWL listening among other things. Now I need to order the dongle and the decision makes my brain hurt.

hello Bill first of all thanks for the tutorial! I purchased an sdr Dongle and was trying to follow your video for install, it's not the same brand as yours but I didn't think that would matter as far as the issue i'm having, the problem is very early in the video when downloading the driver from Zadig, I select the "options" then "list all devices" but in my devices I don't see "Bulk-in (interface0)" I do see RTL2838 UHIDIR as well as 3 selections for wireless devices interfaces (0) (1) (2), and HP webcam (interface 0), my assumption is to select the RTL2838, is this correct or should I be seeing the Bulk in interface? Thanks

2020 and sdr radios can be bought for single figures. Sat in my kitchen with that whip antenna I downloaded a 9mb file off the NOAA satellite, sadly the file had an error so I couldn't decipher it. On putting the whip on a metal biscuit tin as a ground plain as it has a magnet in the bottom, and sticking it my loft I managed a 24mb file off the NOAA satellite. i'm just about to put sdr on the Raspberry pi and set a TCP server in motion so I don't need to run coax from the loft down into the kitchen. Two lengths of aluminium fishing sticks in a 120 degree V will be my antenna later.

So does it receive HD subchannels as well?

Hi Bud.. Thanks for your very clear and patient description but I'm really struggling. The program arrives at the Zadig window OK The edit line has no text...not bulk-in or anything. Driver, usbID, WCID, all blank but they DO fill up with Options..list all devices. Opening the (edit) drop down doesn't give me any options including 'bulk-in' etc. but a single..'usb Composite Device (Composite Parent.') I cannot find the table to which you refer but my USB ID on the window is the same as yours...OBDA & 2838 which is the second in the table, not the 1st for..generic RTL 2832, as your commentary describes. 2838 appears to be the driver for the dongle using the E4000 tuner. With the greatest respect to your knowledge superior to mine, the table and the window ID don't match. 2832 number 1 in the table (Generic RTL2832) and 2838 in the window. Absolute beginners scrutinise instructions and find glitches even though they (I) haven't a clue what they mean. Before installing sdr # should I edit the window to read OBDA 2832 and then reinstall driver? If I you gain the impression that I don't know what I'm doing..you're getting pretty close! 73 de G3NBY. Licensed since 1958 but trying to get a grip on the new magic. I have a Hamitup converter waiting to be used and burning a hole in its box! This is to pass to an utterly non-tech friend.. My next hurdle is to do it on a MacBook. Is this the path to my ultimate suicide..hi?

Which antenna did you use? I have a longwire...and going to use a 9 to 1 unun...toriod coil I built...and a 40 foot lenght wire. Which sdr is this??? Im buying the one that goes from 100khz to 1.7ghz because I a ham operator and want to listen...and to listen to shorwave alot.

I have the RTL-SDR USB tuner R820T+8232 and I cant get the unit to receive HF. Deaf as a beetle. It is supposed to be plug and play and work from 100khz to 1.7Ghz.

What you talking about is rubbis. In the most Country its extreme illegal to use an SDR (Dongle) also Receive anything else than FM and DVB-T with. And receive the Cops or the Fire brigade can end with an very long time in Prison. So beware what are you talking about!
