How to: Set up and adjust your rear derailleur

It’s easy to get into a muddle when trying to sort your gears. The main pitfall seems to be a lack of understanding as to what the adjustments actually do. On all rear mechs there are three main adjustments - the limit screws, cable tension and something called B-tension adjustment.
The two limit screws are actually mechanical stops that control the mech’s range of movement across the cassette. These can be adjusted at the high and low-limits of the cassette - hence the corresponding H and L written on the screws. Correct adjustment allows the mech to access all of the sprockets without overriding, which would cause the chain to derail, or worse, send it into the spokes. Once these limits are set they need no further adjustment, unless something becomes bent or you fit a different cassette or rear wheel.
Cable tension is used to set the indexing, which means that for every click at the shifter the mech moves one gear. This is set initially at the clamp on the rear mech when you install the cable, and fine-tuned with the barrel adjuster on the shifter (or derailleur if it has one).
B-tension adjusts the distance between the upper jockey wheel and the cassette sprockets. This distance is critical to optimum shifting performance, but it’s worth getting it right because is does vary across brands and types of rear mech.
You don’t need many tools for this job and, as long as nothing is worn or bent, it’s relatively straightforward.
Time taken: 5-40mins.
Skill level: Low
Money saved: £10 +
Is it worth it: Most definitely - poor shifting is infuriating!
Got into trouble? Go back to step 1 and try again. If that fails there’s always the good old LBS.

I've been atruggling to get the gears on my hard tail dialed in for months. I bought new cables, mech and cassette and still no joy. Even Calvin's video didn't help me. Something just clicked when i watched this. 20 minutes later i was doing a once round the block to check all was good, shifting beautifully now. Thank you, you saved me having to pay someone... or at least grovel to one of the guys i ride with ha.

Exactly the same with me. Been messing around for ages. Other videos I watched had the cable tension on and for the life of me I couldn't get it right until now. As the comment above said the penny suddenly dropped watching this video Thanks

I just tested it out and it shifts perfectly. you did do a really good job of explaining what the different adjustments do and how they work and I AM happy with the results I got. I'm a Trainer of Newbies for my profession and I think all other Trainers suck ass so I'm real critical of anybody that tries to explain how something is done. it's really meant to be helpful... for the most part.

Very Nice Studio setup, OK lighting, Clean Bike, Handsome Presenter/Tech, Sound wasn't horrible but then when it gets to the B Screw Adj, it's from 6 ft away and completely out of focus. Your Correct in that B Screw adj IS critical for smooth shifting (depending on type & Brand) but we can't see it. At least you gave good dimensions on that adj & proper nomenclature. And, since this production assumes we're instructing Novices & Amateur's who have never adjusted a Rear Derailleur, probably should have mentioned that the Shifter needs to be "clicked" all the way into Hi Gear before connecting the cable to the Derailleur. You mentioned to adj the Cable Tensioner on the Shifter but missed that other little detail. I'm upgrading my 1 x 9 speed Altus to a 1 x 10 w/ a Deore RD-M5120 (it has the stupid "clutch" tensioner that req's additional maint), and I've watched over a dozen YT vid's on Derailleur or "Mech" adjustments/installation. I'd recommend watching this vid as it's straightforward, simple, pretty understandable and you covered Other likely causes of suspect shifting performance pretty well before jumping into turning screws.

Great video, thanks! Question: why (or how much) does it matter that the wheel is maximally seated in the drop-out? With my mountain bike (Kona Blast), I seem to need to tighten the assembly with one side of the axle slightly out of the drop out, in order to make the brake rotor run straight and true through the pads. Could this slight wheel skew/camber be affecting my shifting?? Thanks,

I have a RD_M592 Deore rear mech. When I try adjust the guide-pulley the derailleur moves also lateral not just up/down. When I should adjust the B-tension? Before I connect the shifter's cable when I adjust High/Low limits, or after I connect the cable?

Cool vid' and excellent clear advice, thank you. On my Dura Ace 900 series, despite careful checking I am unable to determine why the chain snags and attempts to lift off the rear cluster when back peddling. It appears to occur at only one point on the chain as if the free wheel mechanism isn't free enough to rotate. All well lubed and clean. As far as I can tell without totally removing it, the chain appears to be in good condition . Any ideas please? - Again thanks.

Very good information and visuals. Just received my new bike and the derailer is out of sorts. On the initial test, the chain ran straight off. I made some adjustments, and it did help, but they were vague. After watching your vid, I will try to set everything with more precise settings. One thing I did notice was the Chain was on the 1st gear sprocket, but the shifter mech was indicating 2nd gear. Is this just a cable adjustment? Thanks.

I've got a XT shadow plus derailleur and a 42t expander cog on my formerly 11-36 cassette. I've found I need to run the B tension screw so that the top guide pulley is as close as possible to the largest cog, or else the shifting in the smallest cogs is terrible. (It's still BAD, but not TERRIBLE... ). Dunno why it's so bad, the whole bike is new as of March. How often do cables and housings need to be changed?

Very clear video thank you, a couple problems with my chainset though. I have the same rear mech shimano ZEE and 10 speed cassete, but i cant get the chain length right for the front sprocket i have, im using the middle sprocket only as i have a triple and realise that my mech is only for a single but chain goes slack on the lowest gear and too tight on the biggest.. any suggestions?
@MBRmagazine
@MBRmagazine 4 года назад
The Shimano Zee derailleur has quite a short cage, so you may find it doesn't have the capacity to work with your 10-speed cassette. The largest sprocket it will work with is a 28t.

@MBRmagazine

If you're just replacing the cable you shouldn't need to adjust the limit screws at all. Just check they are in the correct place, but you shouldn't need to adjust them.

Shimano's instructions state that if you use 11-36 or 11-34 cassette the guide pulley should be 5-6 mm from the largest cassette sprocket, but if you use 11-32 cassette then the distance should be 9-10 mm.

Check the limit screws are in the correct place first (so the top jockey wheel is in line with the smallest and largest sprockets) then tweak the cable tension until the movement of the mech synchronises with the sprockets.

A. The first thing you're going to do is NOT detach the cable! the first thing you're going to do is make sure it's in HIGH GEAR! Because if it ISN'T and you detach the cable with it in LOW GEAR and then by habit you try to quickly change it to HIGH GEAR to keep up with you and FORGET THAT YOU DETACHED THE F'ING CABLE then you might be REALLY REALLY SCREWED because without tension on the cable, trying to switch gears might detach it at the SHIFTER!!!!!! AND THEN YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEND A HALF HOUR FIXING THAT FIRST!!! So... Step 1- make SURE IT'S IN HIGH GEAR and THEN detach the f'ing cable... RIGHT? Ya see... you KNEW you needed it to be in high gear so you had it there. The person watching your video doesn't know you're going to start with the high limit screw! I'm only about 2 minutes in and I started your video 2 hours ago. I'm SURE I'll have more feedback for you...
