With this tutorial and the calculator on my website you can easily set up your CNC mill and calibrate it with very high accuracy. These methods work with any hardware and software configuration. I'm using a cheap 1610 Chinese import running GRBL and Candle.

hi great video! your video and tool and how to is really helpful, before I learned from you and cal it, my 3018 cnc move "10mm" but actually just 4mm ...now it can move 20cm out of 20cm, not a half mm distance error!

@xix xeaon, you can always use calibration test blocks (usually used for ultrasonic thickness meters and linearity checks) for checking accuracy of your cheap digital caliper

question for you, I had a woodpecker control board that was replaced with a new Chinese board with 340 driver. The axis are off by a ratio of 4 to 1. I could correct by making the $101= 3600, but that sounds so far off; that I wonder if there could be another issue.

Hello, I have a question, I am new with the cnc3018, when I put it to work with the lasser the machine only moves linear. but when I put it to work with the router motor, the motor rises and writes over the air. I have even changed my mother board but it still doesn't work for me. Please can you guide me? I used candle and laserGRBL.

Hi. Can you help please. After I load G-code in to machine (Example G-code X=1" But the machine only move .250 ". Can you help how to set up the machine move as the same value as the G-code . Thanks you very much!

Nice video. Is it possible to check the surface flatness to ensure the carriage is parallel with the table?

I would use a piece of bit of ally or hard wood at a certain measurement . (like 5mm) thick/Height and put into 1 corner of the bed and stick down, and then bring the spindle tool part to it and have motor running and touch the part until it starts to cut and take note on your software the height, it started to cut at, and also measure the thickness of the material and see what has been taken/removed away. do this in all for corners of the bed, and if out of measurement adjust the bed until all is equal. You can do all the same without spindle running and not material/block , and just use a bit of paper and lower the spindle tool until it just touches the tool part, by moving paper until you get resistance and do the same in all 4 corners .

In the second method where did you connect the led wires. I have watched the video several times but don't know the steps followed after sanding the bed
@xixxeaon
@xixxeaon 4 года назад
From about 05:10 you can see the black wire is connected to the spindle axle and the red wire is connected to the bed (on the side).

Hi. I am doing this for a CNC 3018. Do you know if these use the same stepper motors?

I can't say for sure, but I would guess Yes; it most likely uses the same configuration as a 1610.

@@xixxeaon i'm also curious if i can use the same values and i'm not sure how to figure out the numbers for my motor.
@xixxeaon
@xixxeaon 4 года назад
@@MrTheTaz If the machine looks similar and you check the default configuration ($$) and it uses the same numbers (800.000) then it probably has the same motors and lead screw.

@andressantos4054
@andressantos4054 4 года назад
@@MrTheTaz an easier way to do this is by using "Universal gcode sender" the "Platform" version, it has a wizard that by slowly moving an axis at a time, and measuring how far it traveled, it gives your the corresponding resolution

Hi again Because I don't have the 2 mml lead screw in my country am using the 1 mml .I did everything in the video but when I jog the X OR Y axis for 100 mml the coordinates says 100 but in the ruler it only goes half that or less, what am I missing ???

And why in the second method you type $101=... different from first method? Is that refereeing to Y axis? I means 100=X axis and 101=Y axis?

how do we change the micro stepping?
@pentachronic
@pentachronic 4 года назад
You can't. It's hardwired on the circuit board.
@adrianharrison5208
@adrianharrison5208 4 года назад
people must be changing the boards out as I have heard peple say they have changed the stepping
@pentachronic
@pentachronic 4 года назад
@@adrianharrison5208 Either that or they modded the board. There are 3 pins M[2:0] which set the number of microsteps. Look at the datasheet of the part they use and that will give you the info you need. Most boards have the pins directly tied to VCC or GND (which is why I say you can't change it). If you can isolate the pins or mess with the board then you can change it but it's not easy if the parts are SMD soldered to the boards. It all depends on how the board is layed out and what kind of board it is. If you have modules then you can cut pins and re-solder jumper wires. Look up A4988 stepper driver IC as this is the most commonly used IC on the cheaper systems.

5:15 and i allready see this introduce backlash. you will measure other side moving back. you need move one direction 800 step is correct.i giveup if it backlash it should be more than 800 step so your cheap chinese thread have pitch error

800 steps sound fine,but when it go 799.98 or 800.02 then something is wrong. it cant be. 2:40 LOL controlled think it go. LOL it moved 140mm if you tolded it.and anyways you moved one direction then other direction .there HAVE to be backlash.move 50mm then continue same direction 50mm. ihave any issues ever.motor steps are 200 it wont change.thread pitch could change if it cheap,but i doubt dat.backlash i beleave LOL but controll not think it go this much.it allways move that much you told,but you see it moved wrong. not opposite LOL ok got it. you moved based on RULER by hand 140mm (backlash included) yes it actually moved less.its back lash.dont calibrate your machine based on backlash. fix back last 800 is only correct based on math. if you are moving 10mm 10mm 10mm 10mm same direction your machine now actually move 10+.something. be couse you calibrate machine with backlash. you have backlash spring?? lol.you think it works?

can I just say ,You used a Ruler and not a Rule, a ruler is not accurate . but a Rule is, so you will always be out of measurement if using a ruler, Please learn the difference from a ruler to a Rule. Quick Hint, A ruler is a none calibrated measurement of an item, A rule is a calibrated machine tool. As for using the bed to use as a sensor, I would Not, Aluminium oxidizes and so you will get in accurate measurement's after a day, so unless you keep sanding the same area clean to get the contact for the voltage to read, you will end up with a worn area, Hint Buy a proper probe, they are very cheap. at about 4 bucks Always keep your work clean, use an extractor , or a simple vacuum cleaner. By keeping the work part clean helps reduce friction and heat to the part, Simples. Personally I would avoid doing anything in this video. and seek proper learning tuts.

I think you missed the point of the video. The point was to demonstrate the _principles_ of calibrating the router, regardless of _how_ the calibration measurements are taken. He states in the video that by doing this you can only calibrate to the limit of the accuracy of your measurement method. It's up to the user to use something reliable as the "known measurement" which is used for calibration. It is a simple, useful video.
