Thank you, Mr. Marshall. Very seldom have I seen a more informative AND entertaining video on RU-vid. Your straightforward and coherent presentation of this information was a rare pleasure to see and hear. I learned something new today. Again, thank you.

I have had a Jet benchtop mortiser for about 10 years. This video is very well done a covers all the basics.

Very clear and informative! Why anyone would give you a thumbs down is baffling. I guess we have some bored Russian trolls here.

While I own a Delta mortise machine, I don't use it with the frequency needed to maintain a comfort level. I find reviewing this video from time to time to be of great help. Chris' instructions are, as usual, simple and easy to follow.

I bought a delta mortiser a couple years ago and it's been quite some time since I've used it. Always good to refresh ones memory.

I find every thing about you video very professional. Can't under stand anyone giving you a negative review. I just bought a Powermatic mortise machine #pm701 and I'm glad I watched. I avoided many mistakes. Thanks again!

Thank you so much, I picked up a very reasonably priced one from a lady who had not the first idea about the machine. Neither did I. Watching your video which is informative and a game changer. Loved going from clueless to informed.Well done!

Chris, This hit the spot. I'm starting to look for a Mortise Machine and wasn't sure how they worked. This was just what I was looking for.

he reason that the manual recommends fitting the chisel with the opening to the side is because it is easier for the bit to eject the chips into the mortise thus reducing build-up of friction and heat in the bit and protecting the temper in the steel.

Very good video, was of great help to me. I had my first experience today on a mortising machine which I recently purchased. Three mortising chisels were supplied with the machine. The end of the auger bit is larger than the square chisel, so the auger bit can't retract. So I didn't have allow for a spacer. I applied the information from your video to set up the cutting, and am glad to say that it turned out perfectly. A nice straight square cut. Thanks for your help.

I'm new to this and I didn't set the clearance space on the bit. Because of that, I'd put burs on the new bit. I will set my clearance. Thanks!

thanks... I came to find out what mortising is, because I found that "high speed mortising bits" at Harbor Freight make amazing, budgetary spiral endmills for 3 for $15 and they don't even dull really fast. I use them in a drill press that I do a little milling with using a cross-vise. I make milled flats and channels therein just like if I had an expensive endmill and you get three sizes. I expected the big one to dull after one project but it's still going strong after several. You could have sold it to me as a cobalt steel bit and I'd be none the wiser.

what is the advantage of it between the router?
@clark77095
@clark77095 9 лет назад
mindfreak001009 The Router makes a round hole at the end while a mortising machine is square consistently. You can use a dado blade and it makes a round hole going up at the end. I am going to use the router then use the Mortising machine to make the ends square.

I direct the chips to the side. That's where my vacuum hose is at, waiting on those chips to come out.

Thanks for this. I just set up my ShopFox and heard some squealing from the bit. Wasn't sure if that was normal and found this video. It's normal, although I don't remember the larger floor model that I used a while back doing this. Do you find that you need a longer lead on the bit for harder woods? I did a test on some cherry and it seemed to work better that way.

I setup a 3/4 inch bit and the unit started smoking at the bit. Any recommendations on how to set it up?
@alekshunter9226
@alekshunter9226 8 лет назад
Sharpen the chisel or have it professionally sharpened and apply some wax on the chisel and the bit. Then like the man said, go slow!

CaptainFuture, I take issue with your comment about his tightening the chuck at every point to be "bullshit." One, that is how I have always tightened bits and consider it good practice. That could be labeled as "bullshit" too. Riddle me this: If I go to tighten a bit on my drill press or mortiser and torque one "access" point as hard as I can, why is it that I can easily tighten the bit further when I move to the next "access point"? Also, on my drill press chuck, why are there three holes? I have never found "access" to the chuck to be difficult. If access were the only issue, all you have to do is spin the chuck until you hit that spot you can access...

0:21 Strictly speaking, I don't think that's true as they can cut round holes too (when used without the chisel) and any other shape that mortising chisels come in.

That thing with tightening the chuck with all access points is utter bullshit. The lower part is stationary while the upper part tightens the jaws by spinning. The access points are only there for accessebility and providing something for the key to go into.
@raphaellearabadjian668
@raphaellearabadjian668 5 лет назад
The sheer tone of your response is self discrediting. Plus, the original tip of tightening the three access points stands solid in reality. From 30 years of experience.
@vkess1
@vkess1 5 лет назад
You probably need more experience using drills and mortise machines. If you don't tighten all access points, the bit will not grip as tight and is likely to lock up in the wood.
