I demonstrate how to set up external hardware in Cubase 7. This can be applied to other DAW, though some of the terminology will be different, the same basic idea still applies. Trying to explain this properly was somewhat of a challenge so, if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments and I'll try to answer them.

Thank you so much. I also use Cubase and the Saffire Pro 40 and could not figure out how to do a aux send/return but this video showed me a couple of things I was doing wrong. Very helpful. Thank you.

Yes you can route any hardware device as shown in this video, you can use it for mastering, for mixing, or for single track re-amping/re-recording purposes.

So a newbie question........ If I wanted to compress on the way in, would I heard the compression effect through the monitors? And if I'm not mistaken the way you have this set up you are compressing a stereo mixdown? So again could you are hear the effect through the monitors and this would then be sent to the master output? The reason I'm asking is becuase my neighbour has a Saffire Scarlett and Logic Pro X and has tried setting this up but can't hear the changes through his monitors nor headphones. I'm running Cubase so this tut is perfect for me

If you have everything hooked up properly (hardware hookups and software setup), and you have selected the compressor as an insert effect... AND you have gain reduction on the compressor, you should be hearing the compressor affecting the audio via the main output (i.e. your speakers and headphones, if they are connected to your main outputs). How I've demonstrated in the video, I would be using the VLA II compressor as a "mixbus compressor", meaning I'm sending a complete stereo mix through the VLA II as an insert effect and thus would be hearing the compressor's effect on the audio through the main monitors (because the affected signal is running out the master outputs, after being processed by the compressor, and then out my main monitors). Make sure all the VST connections are setup properly, as well as the inputs and outputs for all of the channels, as well as the inputs and outputs for any relevant audio interface software (in your friend's case, the Saffire MixControl software routing settings). Hopefully that makes sense.

Thanks for the swift reply much appreciated. I think the problem is the routing through the mix control sofware. In terms of the cabling and VST connection that's all fine. In the mix control software I believe the outputs and monitors are set up correctly, however the routing at the top right on mix console where you are able to choose inputs and outputs maybe wrong. All what you have said makes sense. Just need to try again. My set up is a little different in that I'm using a mixer with inserts and routing that to my interface. Works fine when doing some light compression on the way in. But must say I like the idea of the insert. Thanks again. Let you know how we do

+Misc. Factory Studio the volumeknob on my audioengine wich previously only fixed the volume to the monitor now seem to fixe the amount of audio hitting the outboard processor. so I cant use my monitors now.

why is it that when i changed over to cubase 7 (before i used pro tools), cubase wont recognize my interface (yamaha audiogram 3) or my mic ( trion 8000 multipattern tube mic)... im using a laptop to record. first time using a laptop. ive looked for my mic in the devices and cant find it. it keeps wanting to you the laptops realtek built in mic. please help
@VintiqueSound
@VintiqueSound 10 лет назад
roman sotam Ok, so Cubase (or any other DAW for that matter) will not be able to recognize the mic you are using. The DAW doesn't have any way of knowing this information. The only thing it can and will recognize is the Audio Interface that you have connected to the computer via some type of connection (typically Firewire or USB). If you are using a PC than you might have to install some essential drivers in order for the device to work properly, whereas if you are using a Mac you shouldn't have to worry about anything of that sort. However, there should be some sort of software that comes with the Audio Interface that you would have to install (whether you are using a PC or a Mac, doesn't matter, you have to install it on either one). Before Cubase can recognize the Audio Interface on your PC, you must install the necessary software on your computer. In your case it would be the Yamaha USB Audio Driver, as seen here: faq.yamaha.com/us/en/article/music-production/interfaces/audiogram/audiogram3/1913/3512/audiogram_downloading_and_installing_yamaha_usb_audio_driver Once the software has been installed, you should see the "Yamaha USB Audio Driver" show up under "Devices > Device Setup > VST Audio System > Asio Driver" and then select that instead of the "Realtek driver". That's all I can offer for information, so hopefully this helps.

Hi Dear, I have the same sound card, and I facing Click and Pop on continues basis. can you please guide how to get rid of it ?
@VintiqueSound
@VintiqueSound 10 лет назад
Well, I can try to help, but you'll have to give me more details on what is going on. Clicks and pops could be anything really... bad recording/audio, bad cord/connections, a very slow computer causing a cpu overload within Cubase... etc.

Squid Cluster Productions I am using HP Z 400 Work Station. Cubase 5 also Graphics Card is Nvidia 1GB. Its a new card Focurite Saffire Pro 40. and midi is causing latency when I am increasing buffer size. if i make it less it is causing pops. i have connected it through fire wire.

Umair Shahzad Ok so that is the problem, your computer CPU can only handle so much digital audio computing. Increasing the buffer size is the only way to get rid of the clicks and pops. How much RAM does your computer have? and are you using a 64bit or 32bit operating system?

The correct connection for this and many interfaces is TRS cable for LINE level sources. The XLR input is for MIC level.. 3 years of misinformation.

Hi Guys! We BOTH have Cubase and Windows OS. Mac OS has much more ability in terms of simultaneous multi-Audio Interfaces. I have a MOTU 24i Input interface, and a M-AUDIO 7.1 Output interface. I've heard that the ONLY way I can use BOTH at the same time, is the install "ASIO4ALL". Mac OS does NOT have those problems. I would like you guys to look into this...when you have TIME....
@VintiqueSound
@VintiqueSound 10 лет назад
Hey, so if you want to use two interfaces at the same time on a Mac, you need to create an Aggregate device within the Mac settings. You'll also have to configure the Aggregate device appropriately and sync the two interfaces via a clock source. On a PC you also have to sync the two devices via a clock source, but rather than setting up an Aggregate device, you would be using the ASIO4ALL driver and configuring the ASIO4ALL driver appropriately.

Hello people. I am having some issues when recording my microkorg into cubase. I am positive I am doing everything correct. I have my Korg coming through input 3-4 on my interface therefore I add a stereo (stereo 2) bus in VST connections - I then set the input on that bus to 3-4. Everything is great thus far as I am receiving signal on the master channel. However, when I add a add my stereo two channel and hit the monitor button (I am receiving signal through the channel and I am hitting the monitor button so I can preview my signal going through FX chains in cubase) the sound completley phase's as if it's doubling up. I know this is probably something very simple but I am baffled by it. Everything is fine when I record the signal but I just want to be able to preview the Korg live with FX etc with the sound doubling up and phasing. Cheers in advance!

+Carlo Ribeiro It sounds like what's happening is that you have the "direct monitoring" option selected in your device settings. When this option is checked, it will automatically monitor anything that is inputting a signal into your interface. It will monitor whatever input signal is running through regardless of whether the channels have the monitor button selected. When you select the monitor button as well, you will be hearing that signal twice. The direct monitor will be heard first since it is monitoring directly, and the track monitoring option will be second because it has to wait for the buffer before coming out your speakers. I'm guessing this is what's going on.

Why use a crapy outboard compressor when you could use a plugin and get much better results without all the complicated wiring.

Analoge is much better to handle. I use "DBX 266 XS" and its always better with external Hardware if you make Rock Music.
