Really appreciate this series. This is pretty much exactly how we do it now.

Hi, is the Channel Stip 6 just an empty Midi strip or something else? Thanks for sharing! :)

I noticed you use stereo tracks. Do you account for venues that have mono out which would change your levels and even perhaps cancel out tracks with certain processing? Do you account for center pan or are your shows all stereo out?
@nilsguitar

Hi Tommy, Thanks for the question. Most of the venues I am playing these days do have a stereo PA, but you are absolutely right: it is worthwhile to check your stems for mono compatibility when you mix them down. As to paning, I do have them center panned and any stereo movement is within the bounced stem. This way I do not have to write pan automation between songs.

Hi Nils, great set of videos for live work. I do have Logic and was wondering if you've ever tried Abelton Live for doing similar setups?

Thanks Steve. I had considered it in the beginning, but I did not have abgelten and once I figured out how to do it with Logic, it was easier for me to stay in the format, since my productions and mixes are done in Logic, so it’s easy to create / remix live versions

Regarding your stems, do the levels on each stem translate well from your studio to the stage? In other words, do you or the sound person have to do a lot of tweaking to the stems when you’re setting up for the show or is it pretty much just set up and go? Thanks? Nils! Love your videos!❤

It always fee3ls different hearing the track back on a PA monitor vs the studio. I try to get them in the ball park, first at home, then at rehearsal and finally at soundcheck.The advantage of individual stems is that I can easily adjust sone elements that stick out. It usually takes me a few gigs until I have the stems perfectly balanced. Also after playing with them I might decide that some elements are not needed for live, so it's something that evolves.

Hello Nile Your videos are very enlightening. I am still a novice at this. Are you able share the folder click track which you use for automatically adapting to each song and the verbal count click track by any chance? I am not sure how to create it nicely as you have done. Also some backing tracks say "around" 130 BPM not sure what that exactly means (are all tracks not on same BPM that they are selling. Not sure the best way to handle this in Logic Pro which I have. Thanks in advance!

The count off and click is part of the Template I have online. www.nilsmusic.com/product/logic-live-template/ You'd adjust the tempo for each song in logic . To do so, enable tempo in the global tracks ( left top under edit functions view inhale arrange window) or add a new tempo before the next song using the mouse. alternatively use the list editor on the right top. Move cursor to beginning of next song or count off and click on plus sign in tempo tab to type in the tempo of your next song.

Hey Nils, your videos are helping me so much with setting up backing tracks for my band, Boxteles. I'm just wondering, how do you add multiple looped sections to your logic project? It only seems to let me loop one section and I can only turn it on or off. Have I missed something? Thank you so much for your helpful content!

Can you automate logic in a way that it always shows the whole next song when it jumps to it? I do not want to scrawl in the session during performance.
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 8 месяцев назад
That depends on the zoom setting on your display or in Logic. I usually have it zoomed in a bit closer so I can better see when Verse or Chorus, Bridge etc starts

Nils, do you optimize CPU usage doing things like increasing the Buffer size, or feezing tracks, etc.? I see that you have more than one hundred songs in your projects, and you computer seems to be processing the work load fine.
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 3 года назад
I don't freeze tracks, but I do use a higher buffer setting 512 or so. it depends on your system of course, but even though there are close to a hundred songs in the session I am only playing back 3- 8 St tracks ( stems) max at a time, no software synths samplers or f/x. So the load on the system is not that high. However having higher amount of Ram and a fast SSD HD helps

@@nilsguitar Ok, If I understand it correctly, the length of the project is not as relevant as the number of tracks being played simultaneously, tis that right? That makes sense, wow! I learned more about using tracks for live performance watching your videos over the last two weeks, than over the past two years together, I really appreciate you sharing this very valuable information, and taking the time to reply. I have an old Macbook, its a mid 2012, but some years ago, I changed the hard drive for a SSD 512 Gb, and have 16Gb Ram, although is old, works fine most of the time, but when I started adding songs to my project, it started to freeze, but you´re right, sometimes there were more than 10 tracks being played at the same time.

If I’m not mistaken, you can bounce all tracks at the same time as separate audio files instead of doing one at a time. Thought that would maybe help!
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 2 года назад
You can bounce the tracks itself, but I prefer printing them with fx which …
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 2 года назад
Fx which I have in a fx return bus, I.e. guitar and keyboard might use the same room reverb , so I have to bounce them separat
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 2 года назад
Also I am printing group of tracks together For instance drums I print in a stereo file, rather than bouncing about 10 mono tracks. The logic“ bounce track“ feature is great when you export the file to transfer it to another DAW. But I haven’t found a way to bounce several busses at once
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar Год назад
The only issue is that some tracks when mixing will share the same effect bus ( reverb etc) which then won't be included

Hi Nils, when you have a section on a loop for soloing, can you make sure the loop ends before going to next section of the song, or do you have to click the midi pedal at just the right time for the section to go to next?? thanks, great video's
@nilsguitar
@nilsguitar 3 года назад
Alright the solo section will loop with out any input of yours according to the length of the loop you set. When you want to go on , you press the midi pedal ANYTIME before it reaches the end of the loop and the loop should advance. I have noticed that when its really close, like you're right on it, there might be latency and the cursor jumps back one more time, so in general I'd do it at least a bar before the loop ends
