ATAK is one of the most powerfully complicated mapping and communication tools ever made. In the past it has been hard to obtain, hard to install, and hard to configure, as described in this video: • Move, Shoot, and Commu...
Today, however, it is available on the Play Store, there are numerous plugins and map sources to add, and we will walk you through getting started.

I had a hard time getting mechtastic to work right with atak. They show connected however no messages. Hammer worked ok just sometimes it misses messages, also it conflicts with VNS when it's loaded. The best system I found is a wifi router and a tak server running on a pi or computer. You can use a travel router or a Alfa adapter. Only issue is you can be tracked ez, if your trying to run something for shtf I'd skip this.

South African here. Our community policing is coming together. ATAK has been mentioned as a possible co-ordination tool. Our last operation involved a raid with local police on a location that was fairly large. We did used google maps to identify possible escape routes and we split to cover but our control of assets was very loose. While we did make 18 successful arrests we also lost some of the fast movers due to limited communication with the drone operators and the very basic nature of our strategy. Due to our cell networks being very unreliable and cover limited, if we use this tool we will need mesh networking. We may also need tiers of op data where mission command has an uncluttered overview of our groups while each group has more detailed information of their sectors. Finally, radio comms integration, possibly tiered again where group leaders have better comms with command and the drones and their groups are able to communicate amongst themselves without interference. The groups being able to see every member as well as other groups leaders location or better yet able to toggle the amount of friendly units one is looking at might be helpful if that is an option. Thanks.

Didnt even know the labs channel existed. I have been looking at ATAK stuff over last few days, S2 underground is a great resource too. I have played with ATAK thinking about usecases: my family is going to a festival, how can we keep tabs on where the kids are, where the tent is pitched, the car parked etc. Next, its a field how can we communicate if no mobile data? (Meshtastic for example). Another use case was for replacing life360, to keep an eye on family and when they arrive at school, worl, home etc. I think having a use case and then walk through and/or homework would be great to help us learn how to use. Next I want to learn how to add camera feeds from static and drone cameras, like US forest fire service somewhere - that way I can set up a nice command portal to keep tabs on HQ(home), my CO(wife) and SpecOps(Kids). Keep up the great work Trex arms, labs and everything else

At distances or situations where you can't have network access but only able to send data through radios, more secure the better, and if possible able to connect with cheaper radios like the UV-5R for the friend who didn't prepare with more expensive radio setups, and allows for mass additions to new members if needed.

One of the things I have considered using ATAK for was replacing the use of Garmin Rino’s for things such as ATV’ing and Bear Hunting. We use Garmin Rino’s to make sure we can keep locations of other people in our party (especially for bear hunting in PA) as we try to drive through brush to make sure we are driving the bear in the right direction while also knowing where the other part of the party that’s posted is (for obvious safety reasons). We’ve found the Rino’s too to be helpful for locating other people in our group while ATV’ing as well to ensure we can stay connected and know where other ATV’s are in the group. The issue we have with the Rino’s is that they are pretty clunky to use, go out of sync all the time, And they are often fairly expensive to buy while also having limited capabilities as GPS’s and Radios outside of the “connected location monitoring use”.Where we’ve considered using ATAK as a replacement. Our big concern though is that we often don’t have cell service, so we’d like to figure out ways to plug in ATAK with radios (DMR’s, GMrS, or HAM) or mesh networks to be able to communicate off grid.

Not that this comment will go anywhere however i do want to say thank you for all of these tech videos. It’s opened my eyes to another side of being “tactical” my whole life I’ve been training martial arts and competing/shooting matches and running drills. What I would love to see is an overview of examples of how to use ATAK in a squad. For example: -If you're using it to gather intel of an enemy emplacement, what does that look like? Can it involve the integration of other devices actively gathering data for you, like live-video feed from a drone of a specific area (like a CoD UAV or a Ghost Recon spotting drone, kind of)? Can it be used with other devices to triangulate locations of radio transmissions or the like? -How to use ATAK to set traps for unsuspecting patrols. Can you connect motion-sensors and trigger devices remotely from ATAK itself? -Is it possible to feed radio or other comms through ATAK to consolidate squad comms through a single source? These are just a few things that I would love to see because I haven't found them anywhere else. Everyone talks about the basics of it and navigating the UI, but nobody does a great job of expanding on the cool possibilities or giving alternative selling points to just the squad communication and navigation aspects of it. Thanks in advance! Loved this video for how simply it showed what the rest of the internet makes overly complicated in just what ATAK could be and how to get it useable, lol.

Bread crumbs for others to follow. Search and rescue aids, like showing where each member of the search party has been. Thanks a lot.

For those without Part 90 licenses, and across short ranges, MURS might be ideal for experimenting with over the air connection of devices running ATAK. Multiple digital data types are allowed including F2D telemetry(GPS) and F2B teletype(messaging). Encryption and F2C(images) aren't allowed but it could still open the door to some aspiring plugin developer. There are plenty of inexpensive MURS radios with the common Kenwood K1 plugs that will readily accept a cheap Bluetooth TNC.

Isaac, would love to see a video on ATAK + Beartooth Mk 2, and how well they work with each other for a complete off-grid encrypted set up.

Offline maps and rubber sheet plugin is a good start. Lots of videos showing how to deploy TAK servers.

To accomplish: Atak to a main command screen in a off-x location like an HQ type location, to a larger monitor/tablet

Thanks for continuing to put out info on this … my essential needs from atak and what I’ve “mostly” figured out but would really appreciate is essentially grid down communications with basic data shared and viewable over atak via radio (analog/ and LoRa ) I want to be able to give my family members an android and radio and be able to get their location and communicate with them in grid down scenarios ( and what system would facilitate that best using something like atak )

I would love for you to show me how to use ATAK with a group of friends, how we can do specific missions for fun. For hiking, mountain climbing, whatever so me and my friends can implement guns into it.

Excellent video Isaac. Let's see some implementation out in the field moving and communicating please, all while off line integrating Meshtastic, or any better alternative.
