For clarity, when I said "processed into HDR", I mean that it converts the way you monitor the image into the HDR monitoring configuration of your choosing. As far as I know there is no way to "bake in" the HDR conversion into the file, even though the manual says "record, preview and review using HDR". You can bake in LUTs, and I also think you can convert the signal coming out of the HDMI output port to be HDR, but it shouldn't affect your log recordings on the SSD--other than the fact that it removes options like "Legalize". Appreciate the follow-up. I don't think using the Input->Camera Output->Log/HDR setting is WRONG, it can be pretty useful to monitor in Rec709 (or PQ if that's where you're headed), especially if you don't have a Log to Rec709 LUT (which was the case for the Z6 until not long ago). It doesn't modify the recorded file in any way (as far as I can tell) and at least with the current firmware, it records the same levels as turning Legalize off (as one would expect), ie full/data. That said, I understand the click appeal of the ... firmer... wording 😜

Andrew Stewart I suppose it comes down to your current and future needs.. I bought a Ninja V for the monitoring and perhaps recording with current or future camera. If only for monitoring the Atomos Shinobi is an obvious choice. HDR monitoring in PQ for instance to see all of the image as you will likely grade is a great thing. I record prores on the Atomos Ninja V. I think it’s marginally better to grade log than my internal 150 mbps codec. I might be imagining it, but I think it’s true.. but if I pick up a new Nikon Z6 or other new camera system in 2020/2021 that may have ProResRaw... then my purchase will fully utilized. Currently? I think it’s better though with my computer/codec comparison my laptop handles both formats easily, but I know the external is capable of handling more grading in post.. even from an 8 bit source...... But yes.. for 8 bit source it’s biggest benefit is monitoring in HDR/PQ log etc. and perhaps the grading is better in post?

@@alexshdvideo Interesting; I was looking at the AndyCine A6 Plus which seems like a great value, but the Shinobi isn't that much more and presumably better in some way. As a hobbyist I definitely can't justify $650+ for the Ninja everyone loves. Thanks for the idea!

you don't have to jump between the red and yellow settings page, just touch "monitor" on the top middle while being in the rec mode.

One of the complaints that I give Atomos every year at NAB is that their waveforms and zebras do not reflect the HDMI "input" levels on the file that is being recorded. Instead, their zebras and waveforms reflect the "display" or the LUT values that you are watching. We dont care much about if our display is clipping our monitor view!,....we what to know is our video "FILE" itself is being clipped. Who cars about monitoring levels in our view? We what to know if our actual "recording" is being clipped. In other words, adjusting viewing LUTs back and forth should have ZERO effect on Zebras and waveforms as those tools should measure the values in the RECORDING itself. Waht good is measuring you viewing LUT when that is NOT what's really being recorded? Every year Atomos agrees with me,...but they never change it.

@Jungbluth Videografie - And this is something that NOBODY on RU-vid has noticed or is talking about. Waveforms and Zebras need to measure what is being RECORDED,...not the signal that being viewed with LUTS. The whole damn things is backwards.

thx for the video. One question if you don't mind, but what do you mean by 'processing it in the Ninja V'? I think there's some way to make the Ninja bake the HLG/PQ processing, but I've found that when you just enable it in the monitor tab, it works just as a preview and your recording is still in LOG. Now, after watching this, I have to make figure out the way to bake the look into the clips so I can avoid it.

Not recorded, no, just processed in the monitor for viewing. However, I do believe you can use the HDMI output to deliver that processed signal right out of the Ninja that way, but I've never really tested that. You can bake in your LUTs though if you want.

I wish you covered more on HDR... I just want it to record what I -was- getting on SD. I'm trying to move my workflow from SD to Atomos, but no matter what I do, the clips are 4K Rec709 when recorded on disk by the Atomos. I'm at a loss as to what's wrong. On the Atomos, it says UHD24 HLG for input, NO output, Monitor is Leeming LUT, and REC is ProRes 422. But the file, when loaded into FCPX, is Rec709 every time. Sony is set to record only to HDMI, 24p, 4K. PP10 with HLG and Rec2020 (which work fine and load as Rec 2020 when imported from SD). On the Record table, it's Pre-Roll Off, Pro Res codec, 422 , UDH23.98, and no pulldown. On the LUTs tab, Slot 1 is the Leeming LUT, but During Record and During Output are both off. Thoughts?

Hello Gerald! Hope u r doing good! I wanted to ask a simple question about the Ninja V. I hv a GH4 that does not record in V Log coz I never bought the 100 Dollar hassle as yet. So I wanted to know if I can get the same results (DR wise) by putting a LOG profile or LUT in my Ninja V and record my footage with this LUT (backed in)?? Tx

The HDR/Log toggle is for monitoring purposes only and doesn't change the recorded video. Rec709/HLG/PQ are different monitoring LUTs that have no influence on the recording

Correct. And as far as I know, there is no way to bake them in. But you can bake in the LUTs. And you can send HDR processed images out of HDMI, I believe.

One of Curris Judd's videos suggested a 4 frame delay. I just tried it, that seems about right with a GH5. I am guessing Panasonic reuses hardware across both cameras so try that for a starting point

I did find a difference when importing clips into Final Cut, depending what settings I dial on the Atomos. With matching setting to my Sony A6600, HLG3 and BT2020, the clips correctly show as BT 2020 in the Inspector. Otherwise they show as 1-1-1... and they do look different in the timeline depending what settings I choose in the Camera Output page in the Ninja.

Hi Gerald, thanks for putting this together. I am only using Ninja v as a monitor. When I connect it to Sony FS5, it looks beautiful. But when I pressor record on the camera, ninja goes black, no display. Is there something wrong with it or it's a setting? Thank you.

Not to be THAT guy (as I normally find everything you put out to be spot on) ;) , but Atomos explicitly says to use the Log/HDR combined with PQ monitoring to record and expose log correctly. They even made a whole video about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ItqQ5jClPOE.html Atomos' Ninja products have had a major issue for years (that I'm surprised you never noticed - tons of people complaining about it) with not being able to display LUTs and record correctly because it think everything is legalized so you can't trust any of your exposure tools when monitoring (strangely, the Shinobi series does not have this problem), but using the log/HDR mode is the only way to force the Ninja to "see" the input as Log or other full range video.

I sold my FS5+Shogun Inferno to opt for the Nikon Z6 and Ninja V. I miss 120 FPS RAW sometimes but for the most part i dont regret that at all. I get more contet from every shoot becuse of less setup time.

So if I shoot S-Log 3, I should keep turned off that camera output feature? I am asking because I would mainly use ninja V for anamorphic desqueeze and preview of log footage with my LUT. I don't do recording, just a preview for correct exposure and sense of what it would look like since I would still color grade it in DaVinci.

I Have Yet to Find A video Mentioning this.... If someone has answers or video... please help. So I actually got the Ninja V for the reason of shooting 4K @ 60FPS.. This only problem is... how is this done?.. Am I changing the camera setting to 1080 @ 60FPS and the Ninja will upgrade it to 4k. or am I missing something.

The Ninja doesn't shoot. It records what your camera shoots. If your camera can only do 1080/60, then that's what the Ninja will record.

Wow! I admit I never had a device that is so convoluted and difficult to figure out. The big confusion (partly) comes from the word "processing". It means "processing for viewing"! It has nothing to do with what is being "recorded". The interface of the Ninja is very misleading. This whole "Camera Output" section should be in the monitoring tab. Or they should rename the tabs in a way that makes the workflow traceable and comprehensible. Atomos people: please make this interface more intuitive! And please update your manual (still at the first edition from 2018 in 2021 ...) Thanks Gerald for your great effort trying to disentangle this mess! Big fan!

Thanks for this very helpful tutorial! One question I have about audio on the Atomos Ninja V: If I have an external mic like the Rhode Video Mic Pro, would I get better audio quality from plugging it into my camera or directly into the Atomos Ninja V (analog)? I've heard that the internal (pre?)amp inside DSLR-sized cameras like the Sony A7sii is kind of an afterthought, but I'm wondering if the Atomos Ninja V is any better. Also, I sometimes hear some high pitched hissing in my audio -- is that because the Atomos fan is too close to the shotgun or do you think it some other electrical/magnetic disturbance? I have a fairly compact rig...

Thanks for this helpful guide Gerald. Now that the Atomos Ninja V and V+ have firmware updates to have the unit automatically calibrate the right audio frame delay, would you recommend using this feature still for Sony cameras? My Atomos Ninja V+ is calculating a 9 frame audio delay. Should I stick with this 9 frame delay or the 2 frame delay you recommended for Sony cameras? Thanks!

Late to the game, but I appreciate your videos a lot! Do you have a video on the setup for dual mics? I can't seem to get it to work. I have a RodeMic VideoPro connected to my a7siii and a Sennheiser e100 Lav into the Ninja V. Both have their own power, but nothing is being picked up on the Mic input on the Ninja V. I can't even get either mic to work plugged into the Ninja on its own with it disconnected from the a7siii Thanks for any help!

I know it’s a while since you posted this, but I recently purchased the ninja v and followed the advice given here with regards to leaving log/HDR off and Leagalise ON. On a recent shoot, the image on the ninja looked great, exposure and white balance wise, but on importing the footage to PP, the footage is much darker, over saturated and the white balance is way off when I apply the same LUT that I monitored with. I reported to Atomos and they tell me the issue is that I need to have Log/HDR on rather than legalise “because your camera outputs a full range of log profiles, not the legal range”. Confused! Any ideas?

I have a question about the “2 frame delay” of audio when using a Sony Camera. I read the manual and I think you might be mistaken about this setting. The manual seems to imply that this frame delay only applies to audio being recorded via the Ninja Mic Input, rather than any audio being transmitted via HDMI. However I am new to this, so very plausible that I am wrong.

Hmmm. OK.. I always shoot Log with J-HDR enabled (JVC LS-300 Log) to monitor in PQ and grade in FCPX manually with no issues. So shooting legal disables monitoring in PQ? I’ll have to update and experiment when I have some free time. Or since I seem to have no issues not to worry about it?

I bought the ninja v+ to use wwith my GH6 and I had to send back the first one i got because it had baked-in warmth that did not at all match the image I was meant to be getting with the camera. When I would apply a lut or color space transform in davinci, the entire image would basically turn red. It was very strange. after they replaced it, I noticed the same thing would happen with the new one, but only in specific settings. I still don't really know why.

Is that why my image is so noisy when I try to colour grade in Resolve? I was activating the HDR option, choosing the camera and N-Log, but my video would have a lot of noise and no flexibility to be colour graded.

7:30 I thought I didn't record the audio from an event into my Ninja V because i was using spacebar on mac to preview it and there was no audio.... opened in editor and bam there was audio. Scared the crap out of me.

Hey Gerald! Love your videos! I just had a quick question about Sony profiles for video. I have watched all your videos about Sony profiles and the like, but I recently purchased an A7RIII, (my first Sony camera,) and was testing out the video. I have so far tried HLG3, Cine2, and S-LOG2. (correct me if I am wrong, but weren't those the ones you recommended, along side HLG?) Anyways, as I was color grading them (and I am somewhat experienced at color grading, I have graded other profiles, including F-LOG) I noticed that once I even approached a suitable saturation level, it would introduce color artifacts or incorrect colors in certain areas. Especially hair. I see this problem in all the profiles I just mentioned, but it is worst in S-LOG, and best in HLG. I wondered if you had any idea what might be causing this. I never have experienced it before. I see it in 4k or 1080, even at maximum bit rate, and not much else seems to effect it. Adjusting exposure or shadows just makes it less noticable, and I am using Hue vs Hue to correct skin tones, but even if I don't alter color, it's still there. Any ideas? Thank you!

Hey! Yes, that's somewhat of a known issue. Some people seem to have it worse than others though, so it's likely affected by your editing software as well. I find that you get the best results if you overexpose and then bring it down in post. Also, you have to generally apply saturation before anything else and often doing it in-camera will produce the cleanest results. Many guides will suggest upping the saturating in the profile in-camera. I do it as my first node in Resolve and that works pretty well too.

@@geraldundone thanks so much!! Yeah, I a using Resolve, and over exposed in camera, but found myself having to apply saturation in 2-3 nodes. I might have turned it all the way in camera unaware it would cayse the artifacting. I will try your recommendations. Thank you so much! You are awesome!

I’m confused by these external monitors/recorders and i apologise in advance for such a stupid question, but what exactly are they used for? If my old Nikon D750 can only output a clean 1080p@60 signal (max.) through HDMI, can a Ninja V override/hijack the D750 sensor to record in 4K? (cringe) Or does 4K capability of a monitor refers to it being able to capture and work with a 4K signal from a 4K capable camera? Probably the latter? And what about picture profiles on my camera, do they mess up the clean output? I wasn’t able to find a good youtube tutorial for beginners on this. I was offered a good deal on an old Atomos Blade recorder kit ($200), but i’m trying to justify the investment. Thank you in advance.

How does the zebra settings work on the monitor? They don’t have the same sensitivity as set in the camera. So I’m not really sure on how to use it on the ninja V.

Just got mine! finally, I have a question for you all guys, apparently using the XT-4 Fuji high speed recording option the ting records for example HD 120p on the sd card, meanwhile the Ninja V still records 4K 60, at least this is what happens to me. Can you guys clear this for me? BTW Great vid as Always Gerald =)

Hey Gerald. Atomos Tech Supports is worthless so I thought I would ask you. I just got the Ninja V Pro and am using it on a Sony A7s iii. Most of the time I just want to view my content (while shooting) on the external monitor. I can do that but I cannot make focusing adjustments on the Ninja display. I cannot make them on the Sony display because it is blacked out. How can I use both displays at the same time? TIA, John

I just wanna record tv shows or movies from my phone using adapter hdmi to phone and hdmi to ninja 5...but u said the recording stops every 13 min??? Will this work for recording from DVD player to ninja 5?

If I have a Tentacle synch e would I put that on the atamos or on the camera to connect a track e device. Obviously the atomos is connected to the camera via HDMI but I’m a little confused about the whole connection between all three

GH5 UHD 24p 10bit > Ninja V > Hollyland Mars 300 is that possible without problems like Hollyland cant find a signal from Ninja ?

Im comfused with this display recorder. so if I record to the ssd thats on the display, I dont need the cameras memory card? or you need to have both? if you have the SSD and memory card does it record to both? can someone explaing/break down how the recorder works

please help. I bought the Ninja V off ebay. when I go to activate it, it says that the DID number is already in use. The seller is not helping, and telling me to contact Atomos support. Any ideas on how I can fix this issue?

I don't understand why I can't toggle that Log/HDR option off and my files get recorded in rec709, it's extremely annoying.

It should switch to HR automatically when given a 4K signal. HD is for HD.

For Audio Sync They actually have an automatic calibration option. Thank goodness my delay was 7 frames using EOS R

In recent firmware versions the audio delay only affects the analog inputs. Camera audio will always be perfectly synced to the video even when it is set incorrectly. It's also important to get right if you're using timecode from an external source but that's another story.

I wish Angelbird would come out with a 16TB AtomX SSD mini for the Ninja V. I got the 2TB AtomX SSD mini and 4K 60FPS ProRes Raw devours all 2TB within half an hour. They need to come out with a 4TB option, 8TB option and a 16TB option.

Hey! How do you got 10bit? Because I filmed with my GH5s in Natural profile in 4K 50p 8 bit 4:2:0 without Ninja V and then with Ninja V 4K 50p 10bit 4:2:2 (I hope so) and the footage was the same, no differences. But if I film without Ninja V in the same Natural profile but in 4K 25p 10bit 4:2:2 there is huge difference. Why I can't get same quality with Ninja V 4K 50p 10bit 4:2:2 as without Ninja V 4K 25p 10bit 4:2:2? Should I also change something in Final Cut pro?
