They should be checked on a regular basis, especially if you're in a rolly anchorage/mooring field, as they can work their way loose. Most of the time you can just hammer them in tight again with a mallet (prevents scratching up the mast). If one or two have fallen out and the mast is bouncing around, take them out and start from the beginning.
