In this video, we use VirtualBox to setup a virtual lab with the following components:
Active Directory (NAT running on Domain Controller)
Basic User Home Folder
Basic Startup Script
DHCP
Basic File Shares
Basic Group Policy
Consider expanding on the lab, adding additional roles, etc etc!

Great video Josh, though you're killing me with the old underscore habit lol. The profile path and home directory network drive that gets automapped at login with drive letter seemed to cause some confusion in this demo.

The profile path is for Roaming Profiles and it will cause a temporary profile issue, so be sure to remove that and only place it in the connect To path instead.

When I try to connect to the domain from the client machine windows 10 I get the error " invalid user name or password ". I am sure they are correct, any fix?

Sorry for the slow reply. Usually you don't want to mix those functions together on the same box. Imagine if the box goes down, you could potentially impact both services :>. Is that what you mean?

i am using vmware player and i can not see the "internal adapter" setting. What is the equivalent option here? Thanks.

Internal Adapter will work for the internal/domain network, you just won't be able to reach the internet without using the "Bridge" adapter. This should be OK for the lab though.

I did a set up just like in the video, however, NAT is not working and the client CANNOT ping or browse the internet. Are there any suggestions to make it work? I was going to demo the lab for a class but not having NAT work is making the lab less than realistic!

Any chance you resolved this? I'm having the same issue. Everything else works fine, the computers on the VLAN can ping each other but I cannot ping out to the internet even with NAT installed/configured.

I was able to solve it. Just as he did but sometimes the DNS server is the problem. Also, make sure to turn off the Firewall on Pub, Priv, Domain on DC and DHCP when testing. That makes it easier to troubleshoot. If you are able to browse the internet from DHCP, then it should work for the clients. Also, if one of VBox interfaces is set incorrectly as done in the video, it will not work. It took some time but was not that difficult.

After setting up NAT on the domain controller then restarted the client computers, I am getting an error when a non admin user tries to login "to sign in remotely, you need the right to sign in through Remote Desktop Services"

Hey, thanks for watching. Try adding that user, or the group "Domain Users" to the "Remote Desktop User" Security Group in AD. There's some pretty good results if you google with quotes "to sign in remotely, you need the right to sign in through Remote Desktop Services"

Why wouldnt you run all three of those service on the same server? Any small scale vLab would never max out a low resource server.

What you are saying about putting all three services on the same server is true, but this is for educational purposes. The object is not to conserve resources, but to practice skills several times, such as adding another server, having the servers communicate with one another and joining a computer to the domain. Just practice

Windows best practice is to never have all three services running on one server computer.

I have an old laptop with a pentium i5 dual core and 12gb ram, is that enough to run this same lab set-up?

It will be a bit slow with a dual core, but an SSD will help if you have one :). It will run either way with 12gb ram though!
