How to set up a Stanley 45 or 55 can be a confusing thing when you get it. A combination plane with all the cutters and pieces can look like a mess. what is needed for each cutter? how are all of these parts suppose to fit together? today I want to look at both combination planes the Stanley 45 and the Stanley 55, and look at 4 main cutters and how to set them up.

If you make hand rails those big fluting irons are great. Sure, you can do that with a power router also but myself I prefer the Stanley 55 for such jobs. Just as with making (small) replacement parts for old mouldings/moldings. It is a gem for these things. Making 100s of meters/yards of this stuff might be a stretch with the 55 but for that I think I would prefer to order it from someone that make wooden mouldings/moldings professionally rather than tackle it with a power router myself. I even think I would attack it with the 55 over the power router in any case.

@@WoodByWrightHowTo I also bought a record 405, intending to use rounding irons with it. Doh!! But it looks to me, that you could do it with custom made irons. If the rounding iron was notched (like the cove iron you are pointing at at 1:14) in such a way that the middle of the round was centered on the main skate, and not use the second skate at all. Would that work, or is the second skate still needed for stability of the cutter? If the second skate IS needed, would putting both skates together, so they are touching, and centering the round of the iron on both of them work?

I recently got one a Lewin combo plane and just did my first cut with it this evening. On the final cut I dropped the "fence" side a little, and ended up making the left side of the channel a little deeper than it was supposed to be. Oops! The Lewin has the option of putting the depth gauge on either side, so I think I'll probably put it on the left side in future, between the blade and the fence, so that if I drop the fence side during the final cut it will just lever on the depth gauge and lift up the blade instead of digging in. I think it's probably a lot more likely that people will lean on the fence side, instead of raising it up, especially when you have a large gap between the skates and the fence. It's probably what the other depth gauge is for on the 55.

Great video. I recently bought a 55 and I'm enjoying the learning curve of how to get the best out of it. I have the basic manual for the plane. However, I wonder if anyone ever put together a booklet showing profiles typically used, matched to cutter numbers? I think that would be helpful and handy as a time saver in figuring out profiles that need more than one cutter to make a specific molding.

Those are fun. You have to chisel out a spot at the beginning and end of the groove so that the plane can step down into that. but most of the time the groove is so short that it's actually faster to just carve it out then it is to plow it out.

The last few weeks I have been watching your video's on te 45 and 55. A nice, quiet way of woodworking. One question pops up: Is it possible to do a simple roundover on he edge of a board? I have seen you setting up a beading cutter to do something like it, but one point still makes a groove in the wood, which I do not want. I guess one solution would be to grind away that point, but maybe there is a more simple solution? Thanks for helping me out.

So I had a problem with my 45 where the cut would tend to "walk" toward the fence. I thought I was messing up the alignment of the skate and edge of the cutter (like at 6:16). Then I started worrying a skate was bent. Turns out the nicker on one skate always stood proud ( in any position). Removing it solved my problem. :)

I've had that happen before. Nicker was twisted. Never noticed it while cross grain cutting, but I forgot and left it down on a long bead and sure enough that twisted nicker acted like a boat rudder and steered the plane offline. The old timer that pointed out the problem for me gave advice worth repeating "Don't get your nickers in a twist" :-)

I'm assuming that the setup for the 55 is going to be very similar to Veritas' combination plane. FYI, Veritas makes all their combination plane blades compatible with the Stanley 45/55 if you need new or replacement blades. One problem that I have had is that the 45's knicker blades are way long. When I need a dado, I use the knickers to make fairly deep scores, put the knickers back up, and proceed to cut the dado. Is there something I can do differently? On a side note, because combination planes have an infinite throat opening, they work great for plane troublesome woods, like the reclaimed Doug Fir that I am making a Roubo bench out of. The resinous parts of the timber is like plane glass and laughs at your plane. It trembles in fear when you pull out your 45, Stanley 45. Just be sure to go with the grain as much as possible and take shallow cuts.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 4 года назад
Yes. The veritas combination plane is very similar and it's function to the old Stanley's. They changed a few things to make it more ergonomical and a little easier to work with but everything goes together basically the same way.

I loved your demonstration of the 45 and 55, but have a question. What you said about the 45 not being able to do Hollows, makes sense. However, Stanley also sold 3 boxes of special cutters for the 45, and in box no 3 there were 7 hollow cutters. So if we assume that Stanley would not sell cutters for the 45 that could not be used in the 45, how could you make the 7 Hollow cutters (in special cutters box no 3) work on the 45? I would like to know how to do this myself.
@WoodByWrightHowTo
@WoodByWrightHowTo 2 года назад
That box of cutters also came with a whole set of fake souls that would slide on and allow the plane to do it. Without those it can't do the work. But with those it does it well. The problem is those are incredibly expensive and incredibly hard to find.
