Learn how to set up a high-speed fiber optic network in your home or office. We'll cover everything from the basics of fiber optic cabling to the advantages it provides over traditional copper cabling. You'll learn about greater bandwidth, immunity to EMI, improved security, lower latency, longer distances, smaller size, and increased durability.
Fiber optic cables are much faster than copper cables because - as the name suggests - they carry data optically, ie. using light, so data travels down the fiber at literally the speed of light. You can also run them over much longer distances without signal loss because light isn’t prone to electromagnetic interference and they’re also more durable than their copper counterparts, being able to withstand harsh weather conditions, lightning strikes and temperature changes. That makes them ideal for longer runs, like from your house to a garden office or between commercial buildings.
We'll walk you through step-by-step on how to install and connect fiber optic cables between your network switches, whether you're connecting two buildings via a fiber optic cable installation or rooms within the same building. You'll see how easy it is to run fiber optic cables, and how much more efficient your network will be with fiber optic technology.
By the end of this video, you'll know how to run fiber optic cable in your home have a complete understanding of how fiber optic cabling works and be able to set up a future-proofed network that provides faster, more reliable data transmission.

I just changed from a 30 meter cat5 in conduit below ground, that was installed 18 years ago, to a 50 meter run of dual mode fiber run in conduit above ground and around 3 carports and then under the house. We plan on moving the data closet in the house in a couple of months, so I allowed an additional 10 meters of fiber to go to the new location. Even now I can see the bump in reliability. It's still just gigabit, but the main reason for the upgrade was that I started having issues during storms where I have now lost 3 switches, and suspect that there is a possible fault in the cable between the house and the shed - swapping to a non conductive medium fixes that possibility, and gives me 10+GB ability in the future

Distance is the key with sfp if the laser inside is to bright for the distances it'll burn out the other receiving sfp.

my question is what if i connect a fiber cable to my modem then my pc will it work or does it have to be another modem
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 2 месяца назад
it depends if your modem supports fibre/sfp. If it does, then great - if not then you may have to run a short copper cable to a switch next to your modem. That wouldn't be a bad thing, if it's just a short patch lead then it's not going to slow you down in any noticeable or measurable way as long as it's a good cable cable, eg. CAT6a or something and the network ports on the modem/router and switch support the maximum speeds you need.

So can I use SFP one end and RJ45 the other end just with a converter?
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork 8 месяцев назад
You can do yeah 😀 (the converter will need power though)

@@SwitchedOnNetwork Ah but looks like 10 GbE converters are $$$$$$$$ :(

Is their anyway to connect my pc to switch or router using a fiber cable ?

Didn’t show the MAXIMUM SPEED difference though? 😂 only joking. If only I have 10 gig link to ISP.
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork Год назад
haha fair point though! 😂 Just a 400Mbps download link in the office here, and the rest of my local network tops out at 1Gbps so they just sent me the 1Gb switches and 1.25G modules. Maybe there'll be a follow-up video in a few years time when I've upgraded the rest of the network to more than a gig?!

Hey, there could be demand for high speed internally as well, as long as you have something that can take advantage of it like a good nas

I have a 10g link but we still ran cat6 over about 60ft. It should still do 10GbE, I considered fiber but it looked expensive and easy to break, there's also no way to fix/splice without a splicer kit

Free Chinese devices which defaulted to Chinese when first booted… I’d be very sceptical of back doors on the firmware flashed on those switches…
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork Год назад
Why would them defaulting to Chinese be a surprise? I can see your point but the same could be said for TP Link, and do we trust Netgear and Cisco more because they're American? 🤷
@FreeJulianAssangeNow
@FreeJulianAssangeNow Год назад
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Where possible, flash custom firmware and build your own pfSense router. American and Chinese products can’t be trusted out of the box. The reason why I said that it starting in Chinese would be suspicious is because they should set the settings to be English from the factory for units being shipped to English speaking countries.
@SwitchedOnNetwork
@SwitchedOnNetwork Год назад
They probably do for the purchased stock, companies usually use a separate inventory for the marketing departments who send them out to brands like us for sponsored content. But I agree it's always best to be cautious! I've not heard of pfSense, I'll check it out 👍
