I use a similar setup for basketball and baseball. The only two things I'd add are when you'r on a deadline for submitting the photos, it can be a real drag looking at the images from the remote's card to see if you got any keepers. To speed that up and not waste shots on the remote, I have attached (taped) the PW transmitter to my monopod or even set up a button to trigger it manually so I can still shoot with one camera and trigger the remote simultaneously. Sometimes it's fun to see both angles at once. Thanks for the video.
@RobSambles

That's a good idea. I use it in hand fairly often, hadn't thought to attach it to the monopod

this is a great set up video. I would like to add that you can extend the distance of your remotes by making few adjustments in the remotes.

Hi Rob, thanks to your excellent video I have tried a goalcam on a couple of recent occasions and have been happy with the results. However, could you (or any of your excellent followers), clarify the use of AUTO ISO on the goalcam itself? Should I set the AF-Area Mode on the goalcam (I use a Nikon D500) to d25, Group or AUTO - or am I missing something and it doesn't matter?

Thanks "Past" and "Present" Rob 😁 for the video. In most games you see loads of remote cameras by the goal post, 1) How you deal with get the right spot for you? 2) Have you ever had any issues with other sport photographers at a game? If you did, how did you deal with it? We know the photography world can be a bit over competitive and sometimes toxic. Awesome content as usual 👌.
@RobSambles
@RobSambles 4 года назад
Yeah sometimes there are quite a lot. You just have to try and work together to get a good spot. It's kind of first one there gets the choice of spot. I've not any issues with other photographers no, yes it's competitive sometimes but I'm not one to spend anytime on squabbles for no reason.

Hi Rob I was just wondering. I shoot local soccer and the pocket wizards are quite expensive. I'm looking at the plus x or plus 3. Do the plus x do the sane as plus 3 as in, mount one plus x to one camera and the other to another camera elsewhere. I have only seen them used with flashes but I want to trigger one camera when I take a photo with another. I don't want to do it by just pressing a button. I want to fire both cameras when I'm using one 👍

Soccer (as we call it) is just starting with a spring season so I watched your tutorial again. Thank you, and a question - why not use Auto-ISO on your 1Dx and avoid necessary changes due to lighting variance such as clouds, sunset, artificial lighting coming on, etc. ?
@RobSambles
@RobSambles 3 года назад
The auto iso is decent on the 1dx. Generally though I'll stick to manual when I can. If light changes are continuous then I would use auto iso

No. So long as you focus in advance and then switch the lens to manual focus (so it won't try to refocus) then you'll be fine

Just taken delivery of a couple of +iiie wizards and connected as you describe here Rob. Works fine. The Pocket Wizard manual suggests I should also use a cable from the camera to the wizard at the Transmit end as well. Supposedly gives a quicker response time. Have you ever found the need to do that or just use the transmit in the hot shoe?

Can you change channel mid game so the remote doesn’t fire, like if you are down field and there is no activity near the goal with the remote. Then go back to same channel to reset the link

Hi Rob, would you set up the camera in the same way for an evening game? Say kick off at 5:15 in mid evening (good light) take in to account the lighting changes as it gets later/darker. Also has your camera ever been struck by the ball?
@RobSambles
@RobSambles 4 года назад
In that situation your options are to either set it up so your are slightly overexposed to start with (so that as it gets darker you can hopefully still recover something) or ideally get to it at half time and change the settings
@RobSambles
@RobSambles 4 года назад
I haven't had one hit fortunately. It's worth trying to put it at an angle where it's slightly shielded. In reality though it's always a risk so don't do it without insurance.
@MarkKerton
@MarkKerton 4 года назад
Hi guys. I usually have the remote on auto iso if the game starts light and ends up dark. Also, I’ve been unfortunate and had a shot go wide, bounce of the digital board and smash my PW off the body! So I now Velcro the PW to one of the legs on the tripod.

Many photographers & RS are not aware of the ATG TTL/trigger that are built-in on ATG/Canon/Yongnuo. You DO NOT need PW (overpriced/dated products). An ATG transmitter or flash on camera (holding camera), 2,3, to 22 cameras with ATG flashes on parked cameras. Once you pressed the holding camera those other will shutter remotely by wirelessly. ATG's TTL/trigger are in ATG's ATG, Canon 600EX-RT & 600EX-II-RT & EL-1 and Yongnuo 600EX-RT II
@ClareMcCahill

Using flash during a game would be a red card offence.

@@ClareMcCahill For normal flashes that would be true. But not ATG's cameras & flashes.
@angelisone

@@ClareMcCahill Give it a try by converting your say Canon digital camera into Infrared. Then using ATG IR flash or ATG IR TTL monolight, Then no sport players able to see the flash

I hope nobody ever has as much trouble as I did with radio interference. To make the triggers work around here, I need another pocket wizard in repeater mode and I need to mount the receiving pocket wizard to a small stand so it is 3 feet off the ground. Of course I learned this by shooting multiple games where the remote camera didn't fire.
@RobSambles

Yeah interference is sometimes an issue, although I do find mine fairly reliable

Words from the wise: if you set your camera up too early, it becomes a target - Don't ask me how I know. Set it up, check it's working, and take it out; just before kickoff (or when the players exit the field for the pre-game pep talk), put it back out.
