Yes! I love Migration Assistant and just used it on my Mac Pro and new M2 Pro Mac mini. When I worked at the Apple Store a lifetime ago this is how we setup customers’ computers when they asked for the free setup. It works great! Great vid, Jerry!

Excellent! Clear, concise, and complete. My Geek Squad didn't understand how to migrate using Thunderbolt cables. Their knowledge of Mac compluters seems to be limited. Thanks for the video Jerry. The video was well done and very clear on steps to take in the process. I just migrated all the data and files from my MBP 2019 Intel to my new MBP M3 for myself and my wife's MacBook Pro. Both migrations worked except the transfers were "Peer to Peer" even though I was using an Apple Thunderbolt cable between the two machines. I still do not understand why the Macs did not recognize the Thunderbolt cable but the "Peer to Peer" transfer worked. Thanks again.

Thanks for clearing up a few things. You really need a good thunderbolt cable for this to work with thunderbolt. I tried a few, including one that came with my MacBookPro. The only one that worked was a cable that came with my LG Monitor. Otherwise, it would have been 28 hours by WiFi (ethernet was somehow worse).

That's helpful! I also had to figure out how to save all my Apple TV settings when I got the 4K version. That was not so obvious since it was the 'Home Screen Sync' in the iCloud settings.

Thanks for a great video, Jerry. I'm going to migrate from my old Intel MacBook to a new M3 MacBook Pro. I don't have a Thunderbolt cable, but I have a USB-C to USB-C cable. Do you know if I can use that instead? Another question: on my old MacBook I have two partitions on the harddrive. Can the migration assistant handle that? Or do I have to partition the new MacBook in the same way first? Thanks again 🙂

Good question. I used to use it all the time but I think part of it is they do not fully backup the entire system now. For example, if you have a brand new Mac and do a full Time Machine backup, it is really small because it does not backup the full os anymore. And in general I have issues with backups completing and restores. I need to make a video on how I backup.

going to migrate my old 2017 iMac to a new one as soon at it arrives. My thunderbolt cable and adapter are ready. I assume the procedure is the same for an iMac? I also got a new ScanSnap scanner. Should I trash the old app before installing the new software? I also am ready to update MS Word with a newer version. I assume the new version will delete and replace the old one so files can be opened? Great video by the way.

So I have a late 2012 iMac and want to get a mac mini m3 once it’s released. I want to migrate assist but don’t want to do it via wifi since I know it will take ages however, I know I won’t be able to do it via thunderbolt 3 cable either since a 2012 iMac doesn’t have those ports. Is it possible to use something like a USB A to USB A cable? I have an ethernet cable but I don’t think I have those dongles you’re talking about.

I ran into an issue where my old Intel Mac drive was formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and my new MacBook Pro M3 silicon drive is formatted as APFS, I got an error message when attempting to complete the migration. Is this type of migration using the migration assistant possible?

I will soon be migrating from a late 2015 Intel iMac 27” Retina Mac running latest version of Monterey on an external SSD that I use as a startup disk (the internal Fusion Drive failed a long time ago). I do not have a Thunderbolt 3 port on my old iMac, just USB-A Gen 1 (5GB speeds). I was wondering whether I would be able to disconnect the external NMVe BootSSD drive from the old iMac, put it in a Thunderbolt 3 enclosure, and connect it to the new iMac via TB3 port and then use the option to transfer from a Startup Disk before powering up the new Mac for the 1st time. Does the Startup disk need to be a separate partition on the old Mac, or can it actually be a boot drive in external enclosure. If using Startup Disk option, will the new Mac look for connected SSD Drive to choose from? I hope so as this would be the fastest way for me to transfer the data.

I still have and use the Aperture App. When I migrate or restore from TimeMachine, will I transfer the Aperture App altogether? This App is no longer supported by Apple. Thanks in advance, Jerry. I’m not sure what you mean. A thunderbolt cable has USB-C on both ends and supports Thunderbolt four and USB protocols.

@5:12 you say that Migration Assistant is located in a folder named Other. In Finder, on my machines it is located under Applications/Utilities.

I'm leaning toward doing it the hard way. I just bought a new MBP, and my prior one (MBP 2015) has so much stuff that I no longer want or need. I have made notes about the applications that I want on the new laptop, and I'm going to see how it goes if I install them fresh, either from the App Store when possible, or straight from the developer. Most of my content (photos, videos, documents, etc.) resides on external SSDs with multiple backups, which I'm hoping will make the whole process a little easier. When I got the 2015 model, I migrated everything over from a 2009 model (yes, I keep my laptops for a pretty long time), and there's a lot of content that I just want to leave behind completely. If you have any tips on how to do this, or even a video, I'd be grateful, but I understand if it's something you don't want to get into.

I agree with you. Using your method you will get a better overview on what is important to transfer to your new mac. And a clean install of the apps will make sure they work properly. I will hopefully buy a new Macbook pro myself pretty soon, and my strategy is to download the contacts, ical-events, mail etc from icloud. The bigger files like movies I will copy from an external harddisk which I will clone my old Mac to. That way I will have a backup of my old Mac that I will not delete until I have used my new Mac for a while and everything works fine. I have still a Macbook Pro from late 2013, which works fine, but Adobe wont let me update their programs anymore, so they force me to buy a new Mac. I bet Apple and Adobe do this with purpose, but its ok because my Macbook is pretty old now :) BTW, do you use keychain? How did you transfer your passwords from the keychain to your new Mac?

I use a password manager, which has a browser extension. It makes that process pretty easy. I’ve had my new laptop for a few months now, and everything has worked out well. I still have my last Time Machine backup from my old MBP, and I also made two copies of all the content folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.), which has come in handy - especially with music that I didn’t buy from the iTunes store.

Yep that is an issue. You will need to make it a new short name like jerrys vs jerry, or remove the old account on the new machine.

Jerry, I just bought a new Mac Studio M2 Ultra and I am migrating from a 2018 5K iMac. The iMac is running 10.15.7 (Catalina) and I am assuming that the Mac Studio is packed with Sonoma. I have read that using Migration Assistant when moving from an Intel to an Apple silicon machine can be extremely problematic. I have not even taken the new Mac out of the box yet, and I would VERY much appreciate your assistance in getting this right. Can you kindly give me some words of wisdom?

Hi. I am in a similar position. What did you end up doing? I am also getting an M2 Ultra MacStudio this week and my current Mac is an Intel iMac Pro. I am tempted to just do a clean install of apps on the MacStudio and copy the files I want over from the older Mac. Reason is I have put the iMac Pro through extreme use over 5 years without a fully clean install. I feel like starting completely fresh is the safe and optimal way to go. Hearing the potential Intel vs Apple silicon issues makes me more confident this is the best choice.

if you dont have a thunderbolt cable, try any usb c to usb c or the cable that came with the iphone 15 .. it will set up an ethrnet connection between the 2 computers with sppeeds of 100 MB/s .. which is not that bad to do the transfer "for free"

Thanks Jerry. Solid video as usual. I have used Migration Assistant on several new computers. However, just tried it to transition from 2020 I9 IMac to a new Mac Studio Pro. It absolutely would not work. I thought Wi-Fi was the issue so used direct TB3 cable between computers as you suggested here. No dice. It just kept spooling - for over an hour. I ended up just doing a disk copy solution which worked OK. But clearly not as seamless as the Migration Assistant. No idea what the issue was. I hadn’t thought of trying MA AFTER setting up the new computer. That was a good suggestion. Have you heard of any “Intel IMac to Studio” migration issues generally?

Dang. No I haven’t heard if specific issues but depending on how much data you had on the iMac with the spinning disk it may have just needed a long time to assess.

use time machine to backup the old computer on the desktop. now run migration assistant and it should show up. migration assistant needs to find a grouping of files it understands.

Great video, thanks! My migration keeps failing. Both MacBooks are 500G but when I migrate it stops and says there are 500G+ files. I assume this is because of a large OneDrive on the old machine. Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Deselect the files and move them manually after.

thanks @@JerrySchulze I ended up unselecting my personal profile which was 0.5TB then Migrating everything else. Once done, installing OneDrive on the new machine with all my files.

Sheesh! Wish I would have known this a few weeks ago when I received my new M2. I have an older 2014 iMac with thunderbolt 2. Would a thunderbolt 2 to 3 cable work the same way?

I had the same problem migrating from a mid 2012 MacBook Air to a 2023 MacBook Air. I used a USB to USB-C cable for the migration and was done in about 15 or 20 minutes. No problem!@@JerrySchulze

Jerry, I have an old iMac and the internal drive is not functioning. I boot into an external thunderbolt enclosure with 3 drives (OSX, User and TM). I want to transfer the data to a new MacMini that will be connected to another thunderbolt enclosure, with 2 hdd; one to hold USER data and one for TM. The internal storage of the Mini is too small to hold all the USER data. With Migration assistant, can I specify which drive the Apps get migrated to and also which drive the USER data gets migrated to? Cheers

Thanks for watching. In this case I would deselect most items and just transfer the user info and the apps during the process and when done manually transfer over the files.

For whatever reason if I used Migration Assistant on the old computer, it would only transfer via WiFi. But, if I put the old computer in Target Disk Mode, I could then transfer via Thunderbolt.

Thunderbolt 3 does not work on my older mac. Every tutorial features newer mac laptops with the latest features and os. I got a 2014 mac desktop trying to get my stuff over to a newer mac studio. Anyone got any good tutorials?

Thanks for watching. The good news is that you can do this exact same process. I mention in the video if you get usb to Ethernet adapters you can connect them with an Ethernet cable. USB to Ethernet adapter are like 10-20$ on Amazon.

I used Migration Assistant to transfer everything from my 27” 5k 2020 Intel iMac to my M2 MBP - wish I had known about the Thunderbolt option- would that have worked between those 2? The ONE ANNOYING thing that hasn't transferred is my auto fill usernames and passwords within Safari. They don’t show in Keychain Access, either. Anyhthing I can do to fix this? Thanks!

Does the 2013 have Ethernet? Either way, you can get Ethernet to usb adapter real cheap.

@@JerrySchulze It has no ethernet - just the two Thunderbolt, 1 and two USB 3.0 ports. An HDMI (video?) port is the only one.
