The arm doesn't pull in because of centrifugal force but because the cartridge is offset against the pivot the friction caused by drag on the needle causes a turning moment.

This was a great straight forward explanation! Thanks!

Great tutorial.. I have a question about the M-447's. Since they have been discontinued, what is the best replacement needle for them? I've heard mixed reviews about the N447's by Tonar. What is your preference on this. Cheers.

For the height, where is the indicator to know what number it is on?

Warning!! I recently purchased a Technics SL1210GR and it is a very nice turntable, but after a month of struggle (skips on brand new vinyl, anti-skate that was way off, etc.) it turned out that the culprit was the auxiliary weight at the end of the tone arm, which had to be REMOVED!! I was going crazy for a month trying to figure out why the tracking force was so weak, and why the balance weight was almost as far forward as it could go just to balance the tonearm. The Technics manual didn't put near enough emphasis on the importance of the auxiliary weight, and one would assume from reading the manual that the default is to use the auxiliary weight. For many cartridge/headshell combinations, you will never get adequate tracking force unless the auxiliary weight is removed!! I hope this helps someone. I purchased a second cartridge unnecessarily during my fit of confusion.

I was baffled at this too, I've just left it off and hoped for the best

@@Lee-yt1de Another strange thing with mine involved the anti-skate, which I thought was causing all sorts of tracking problems. It turns out that the tonearm needed to be exercised through it's full range of movement due to some wires that were either tangled or stiff. Once I performed this simple exercise, I haven't had a single tracking problem. Again, you would think the manual would alert you about this possibility but I had to do a lot of reading on the forums to find the solution.

Have u set your anti skate to the same reading as the stylus pressure knob? I have and I can't really tell if it's ok or not, it sounds good but I haven't got golden ears and I'm abit worried that I'm damaging my stylus and records
@williamtaylor5193
@williamtaylor5193 3 месяца назад
@@Lee-yt1de As I said, it turned out that the anti-skate was not the problem. The issue was tension in the tonearm wires, causing a resistance point, which no amount of anti-skate could remedy. Once the wires were loosened up, the problem went away and tracking force and anti-skate are now in sync.

Part of it is just trusting your ears. Is there noticeably more distortion when the tonearm reaches the inner grooves? How quickly does the tonearm move through the runout area? It should move slowly, but surely.@@Lee-yt1de

I dont think this is accurate. With my 1200 here is the issue. Mind you Im using a standard rubber mat. If I level the tonearm as suggested, Making it parallel to the record so it sits level. At that point when I go to zero it out and balance the tone arm. Zero is no longer zero weight its .64grams. I am using a digital scale at the needle. So my cartridge Nagaoka MP-110.tracking force is 1.5g-2.0g So to do so, my tonearm is reading like 1.3grams. Just an FYI

Did you remove the auxiliary weight? I had a fit for a month, wondering why I had insufficient tracking force, and everything that goes with it (sudden skips on new vinyl, anti-skate that was way off of the recommended setting, etc.). Technics did a poor job of emphasizing that for many cartridges, the aux. weight is unnecessary, and throws the whole calibration process off.
