Make video games, RU-vid, Netflix, and other local or streaming movies and TV shows more immersive. Make it easier to tell which program is the active app by associating unique backlight colors. Automatically switch between custom colored bias lights, music responsive color changes, and screen responsive individually lit RGB backlights.
This is an tutorial replaces the AmbiBox Software Setup guide I previously made ( • How to setup PC & TV B... ). This video improves the capture of the menu's and provides synchronized footage of the lights as changes are made in software. It also adds some hardware setup and troubleshooting tips, content demo's and expanded explanations for software options.

Sorry for the delayed response but I have a possible solution for you. An AliExpress seller offered me a discount on a 4K TV AmbiLight box. I still feel uncomfortable doing paid videos, so after using it I agreed to make a video they could share BUT they didn't get to see the video first and they agreed to offer a discount instead of paying me an affiliate / referral fee. Good day, leds are working nicely on PC monitor, how ever when i plug it to TV its not working. It seems for me that box does not understand which port is used. Any solution?

I got similar led box. And not working. But now after this video star working. I have ultra vide 35inch gaming monitor. Curved. Thanks. On android works ambientlight but something wrong. After few minutes not working led lights.

Hey there! Thanks for the video, it's helped me out a lot. However, I was wondering if you would know why the capture rate is always stuck around 12FPS, and why the lights lag behind about a second. There's a noticeable stutter and color transitions aren't smooth and are a bit delayed. I can't find an answer to this anywhere. Thanks!

If you have the Max FPS higher than the value you are seeing, your LED power supply is sufficient for LEDs, and you are not bound by your CPU than you are doing everything you can to get it running. You are likely never going to get the FPS much over 20 to 25 fps, but to be honest it doesn't really matter. What we don't want is for your FPS to drop under 12, and I bet they are. Check out the app Prismatik. My video, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html, will give you a general walk-through, but pick up 5.11 unofficial as it's actually newer than version 6. Ambibox offers more detailed customization, but Prismatik offer many people more performance.

@@sixty-six Thanks! So I've got a 4K TV and apparently it wasn't liking it when I had my desktop in 4K, when it was 1080 it worked fine. Now I'm wondering what kind of hardware I'd need to upgrade to get it to work smoothly.

I don't have an Android box but there is an Android TV streaming Box app ( play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sevson.androidambiapp&hl=en_US ) that claims to work. I don't have one of these devices so I not purchased the software, and therefore never played with the software either. The reviews are polar, with mostly 1 and 5 stars - which leads me to think that that either only some hardware works or some content. Netflix is known for having issues with DIY Ambilight. Then there is the issue of having to power both video playback and the lights which might be asking a lot of some of the lower end android boxes. Finally, 4K and HDR was an issue for the DIY community for some time and maybe (again I don't know) this software still has some issues. I want to do a video about these options, but I am not sure yet what Android devices to work with that would be the most help for people exploring it as an option. As far as this device - if you have an HDMI out and a windows, mac, or linux computer you can get it working with a TV as well.

HELLO BRO! Sorry to bother you. PLEASE HELP ME: My ambilght kit "stop" working = It start as the leds blinking in red then all the leds where working only on red. The PC and the prismatik and ambibox knows are connected but they don't intervine with the strip. Then i try reinstalling, unplugging, and pressing the red button on the arduino (ambibox) and half of the 5MT led strip kind of work on different colors but the software dont. Know i realize i've problems with the power supply, one is blinking and doesn't give any power, and the other instantly heats all the near leds. Sorry my explanation, im from Chile, but can you give some orientation? What could be the problem? The ambibox? the code inside? the power supply? the led strip? PLEASE HELP! Thank You!

@@jorgeruz For others who are curious, bad power supplies appear to be one of the most common issues. Sometimes, if you lower the brightness of the LEDs you can make it work, but based on your description I don't think that would have helped. Glad you got it working. Enjoy!

Do you know how to have this these lights work on a tv? I bought these strip of LED lights from a bogus company where they said its meant for tv's but they wont reply to my emails in order to help me to get mine to work. Their product uses the same program as the one you're talking about but when I plug them in my tv its just unresponsive and does turn on. When its on my laptop it kinda works, not all zones are used during screen capture and these zones that aren't used don't get assigned a spot on the strip of lights.

TV use is difficult. There is no TV, except for the AmbiLight TV's by Philips that work with smart TVs. Samsung TV's will work, but it requires either an Android device or a Window's, Mac, or Linux PC to be the source of the content. Alternative solutions, like the Hue Play and LightBerry exist, but they still require the source of content be something via HDMI.

I unpacked these LEDs, connected them, and they lit up just as I wanted. I then attached the remaining 11 LEDs to the monitor and cut them with scissors (at the point where it can be done). When I connected it back to the computer, only the first LED lights up in white (I should add that the whole strip has power because I checked it with a multimeter). Can you help me?

Aww thanks. I really like this sort of stuff so I like the idea of trying different setups to help others put theirs together. To answer your question - kind of. You can't work it with a smart tv directly. The reason for that is because the electronics that handle the content and how it passes to the screen don't allow for any way to direct way to capture the screen content data necessary. Some TV's has USB ports but that is typically only able to power a device like a Fire Stick or basic bias lights. This would require either a computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or an android powered streaming box because it needs a more powerful computer to analyze the screen in real time. It also needs the content to be coming from someplace where it can scan frame by frame. The electronics in these kits (prebuilt or DIY Arduino) have the power to control the LEDs and that's it. There are ways to use something like a Pi with a different software package - but it still won't work with Smart TV content. Even the specialized devices like the Hue Play won't solve the Smart TV solution. Now, there is a product that might work. And I want to do a review of it but I can't get my hands on one. It's made by a company called Govee and their idea was a camera that faces down towards the screen and records what you are watching to control the lights. It sounds like it has a lot of lag because it's always capturing data that is already being shown before it starts changing the lights. I don't think it will work well for fast scenes or games, but it might work for slower story driven content. I don't want to pass judgement until I try it... but since I can't get it I ask people who are interested to go to their Facebook page and tell them to contact me. I have been running through as many of these PC powered solutions as I can get my hands on. I have also been trying to but together some other videos in the 'immersive entertainment' category - but again, it's been really hard for me to get equipment as of late. But I will post them as I finish them. (Hence why I only promise videos every 66 days. :D But I try and throw something together more frequently, even if it's just a ambilight let's play.

hey, I run into an issue someone might know how to fix it. none of those com 1-30 works for me and if I go to device manager it's listed as USB Serial and I tried every USB port. EDIT: Install the driver by searching ''Windows CH340 Driver'' on google this worked for me :D

The webpage info I boughtit from says just plug into usb and play on TV, but I only just the lights flash up initially for a second or two, and then nothing. And all of these settings seem like it's just mostly for the PC?? :\ I'm having trouble finding a proper instruction manual or anything! :(

@@sixty-six hey i need some help if you see this comment. my ambilight works very fine but i have a big issue and i find anywhere a solution my screen is configured like this : screensaver basic black > 1 min, screen turned off >> 10 min so when i have the basic screensaver, the leds are all turned off, so its ok but when the screen is turned off the leds wakes up and stay in white light (screen capture mode > GDI FS aero), this is f*cking annoying and i dont know how to resolve this, i want leds off everytime nothing is displayed on my sreen i found a alternative, to set up "windows 8" instead 'GDI FS aero" in method of screen capture, and windows 8 keeps leds off when my screen shut down BUT windows 8 makes me crazy, its heavy bugged, everytime i change single screen for dual screen or i change my screen frequency, the screen capture mode capture i dont know what and doesnt works anymore, i can do what i want in setting i cant fix this... sometimes "areas of capture" goes on my second screen i dont why. its like if windows 8 capture something on the second screen even when i am on a single screen, i dont understand the worst part is if i recreate a profile in "window8" the issue remain.... the only way to fix this is... to load a windows system restore !!!! (sometimes i hate computers lol) so im pretty stuck between these 2 issues for the moment i keep the basic screesaver and desactivated the auto turning off screen, but its annoying cause i want it turned off when i sleep or not using it (my pc stays on 24/24 7/7 ) if you can help me i will be glad sorry for my english

hi, thanks for the vid i could setup things good...but im facing an issue the lights shuts off ramdonly and i've to exit the ambibox software of the task bar them unplug the usb and plug back the usb of the lights and finally start again the ambibox software....this "solution" works for a few minutes or if im lucky for a few hours...idk why this happen can you help me? thanks

yes, I have the same problem. the connected LED lights are under "other devices" and has name "USB Serial". Even tho I tried all the USB ports, it doesn't do anything. Any advices? Thank you

Look up the driver "ch340g" and install that. I had the same issue. I had to contact the seller for that info.

Michael Chu was right. I was having the same issues, but managed to find a link to the driver. Once I used it, my system recognized it as (COM3). Once I made the change, I was able to change the colors on the LEDS. sparks.gogo.co.nz/ch340.html

COM1 shows connected but there's no light. Backlight is checked and lights illuminate the typical RGB startup when disconnected and plugged back in. I can't find any reason for this to not be working. It was fine before I did a clean install of windows and now I can't get it operational again.

Netflix is weird as it has copy protection to prevent apps from running on top of the video. Some have reported good luck with PlayClaw ( playclaw.com/ ) while others have no issues with Prismatik ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html ).

Thanks for the Video, but what would you do if your PC doesnt recognize the box correctly? In device manager it shows just "USB SERIAL" with a questionmark, so obviously the driver are not installed, or not installed correctly...

Also: when in Ambibox software, make sure you click on "show more settings" and select the port of the box (shown in device manager).

@@stefank610 Thank You, but unfortunately even that’s not working to install the drivers... like I downloaded the files but going to install them from the setup menu says it can’t install driver... so I mean idk if I need to be like clicking certain things that I’m not or like what or putting them into a certain folder, I’ve had to do that before with some things I’ve downloaded... I’m just not sure what to exactly do to get it to work, it’s kinda frustrating lol

@@tylerseadorf7132 i get you lol I just extracted the archive and started the setup.exe inside of Ch341ser folder while the box is connected. After a reboot, in device manager the box was recognized correctly with a assigned port

@@stefank610 so like... I’m confused lol... did you click the setup after extracting files and it bring up a little driver box to install/uninstall a device driver.? Cuz that’s what it did for me and when I click install it says driver install failure, so I restart my laptop and even close out of everything and go back into it and try installing again and it says it can’t still... sorry if I’m being a bother I’m just really frustrated with not being able to use them lol

when i plug in usb this comes up :( 'Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed.' PLEASE HELP!!

Code 43 is typically a hardware issue but it could be driver issue. I assume you restarted your PC by now, and likely tried other USB ports with no luck. If not try that, but check for Window's updates. If that doesn't work try disabling the device and reenabling it. Right click on the start bar, choose 'device manager' and under Ports (COM & LPT) disable the USB serial port it's plugged into. You can also check for driver updates here after you have reenabled it. OOF. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

Did you install the driver for it to recognize the device? Generic it will just show as a usb2.0 device. Look up a driver with the name CH341SER.zip if you're using an Arduino Uno R3/clones, you'll need that driver to get Arduino IDE interface to communicate with the device.

After you plug in the USB to the lightbox, does on the main profile page, after you click more settings, there is an option for port. If you select COM1 and then tap down with the down arrow through each of them - pausing for a second or two each time - do you see any of them that say connected in the bottom left corner?

Thanks for the tuto, but I keep having the same problem. I bought a kit several months ago and I havent had time to install it. And now, that I've done, only one of the 104 leds is on and always in green. I have the same installation as you, with T conectors. I also have 2 different power supplies and I dont know which is correct (I've tried both with no success) because I bought a 4 m led strip but only used now less that 2 m (a 27" pc monitor instead the original project that was for a 43" TV). Do you know what could be the problem? I've tried ambibox and prismatik, and do what I do, the led is always on in green (it's around the middle of the 104 leds). Can anybody help??

Can you turn it off? If you know it's exact number you can just disable it and double it's neighbour into it's place or cut the strip and join on a new section . Most likely a bad led or led controller . Since these leds are independent they each have their own little computer telling them what colour they should be. That one might just be bad .

I had the same issue since I couldn't my ''Device'' Name in the box it came in. Try unplugging your usb cord and See if the ''Device statue'' still says ''connected''. if it does you have the wrong Device/port setting. with the Backlight option on, you can try scrolling the different device and port until they turn on. (it worked for me) Hope this help

Help! anyone here experience when LED just turn off suddenly? everything is working as it is but after around 20-30 mins it it turn off but in the ambibox settings, it is connected and backlit is checked. My troubleshoot is always to close the program and unplug/plug the usb to my pc then opening ambibox. After than everything is back to normal. I think it goes to sleep. I cant find any settings about the lights going to sleep.

THIS Product is for PC ONLY, not Tv or Android or IOS or Anything Mobile (excluding laptops as they are pc's). There are other hardware for other devices. Reason WHY? The hardware only analyses the input it gets from the selected source in the program. aka windows 8 / game capture / music etc. and it does this via drivers and outputs it to the arduino based computer in the box which in turn uses the info you told it about your setup to change the various lights in various ways / shapes and forms. If you want something just for a tv then there are other options, that do the same thing in different ways. Some are from tv manufacturers and usually a built in option for the more expensive sets while others are equally expensive like the Hue systems, and then you have the cheaper and less precise options that still do a great job but with the use of external features like a top mounted fish eye lens camera that basically takes a picture of the screen and translates it into Argb code for the lighting up of individual / section's of lights. (some of these also work on computer monitors) although not as immersive.

I have heard that if you have all three plugged in via USB and then install Prismatik you can configure each with it's own profile. It seems if you already set one up with Prismatik you have to completely delete the application, and reinstall with them all plugged in. I have a walk through for the using one lightbox with Prismatik here ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html ). In the description I have links to download different versions of the software. I would start with the unofficial build as it's actually a new build based on an older release of the software. is any option to use 2 copies of ambibox to use separate 2 profiles at 2 monitors? I acutualy use 2 setups connected to PC because one one leds are on display for game and one is at TV. Only solution I found is use Prismatic + ambibox and let them use differend COM port but I like ambibox futures more so want use 2x ambibox. Any clue? Copy ambibox to other folder didnt fix that and program notice there is copy in background.

Last I have seen Ambibox doesn't like to have two copies of itself running, and it can't seem to handle multiple LED strips. However, you could run one long strip and tell Ambibox that different LEDS are on different displays. The LEDs that are between the two displays can be set to off.

If you use the official Windows apps, yes, you can run into issues. I read reports that play claw can help avoid that issue, but I have been satisfied with simply using these services via a web browser. I can say for certain that they perform perfectly in Chrome and Edge.

It's most likely due to your controller issuing a blackout command to the LEDs if it doesn't get an update to change the color after a period of time. Ambibox doesn't have an easy way to modify that, but Prismatik does. It could be a hardware issue, but we can rule out hardware by setting up Prismatik and then making a simple change to the settings. Sixty-Six Days hey there, before trying your solution i tried a couple things. So in my specific case i have a dynamic wallpaper (a steam app), and i found that if i enable some music on the wallpaper (about 1% volume to maintain it inaudible) the lights think im giving them a constant input, so they never go black! Anyway, thank you one more time for the advice!

That’s awesome man... I purchased this like 6 months ago, and only 10 LED’s worked. I was so pissed and was told to return it but I had to cover shipping to China for $40 when it cost me $55... I gave up and threw it in the corner until I saw this video... Amazingly helpful is an understatement with what you have provided here... What do you do when the LED just stop working. I had them working and when i redid my room and plugged them back in the same way they stopped working. Ive been trying to fix them for half a year.

Hi, great video! I have a question about my light strips. They're the same ones you have it seems (they used to have them on amazon but now I can only find them on ali express). Anyways, I fully set them up a while back with everything working extremely well and recently I switched desks which meant undoing and redoing my setup. I expected to have to find the com port and put the new one back into ambibox however once I did this nothing happened. The red led in the box is on and I can see the device show up under usb serial ch340 however no matter what USB in my motherboard its in and what com port I put it's still not lighting up despite it saying connected at the bottom left each time. I can't tell what's causing the issue, it seems to be either a power issue or an issue with the led strips being broken. I found the exact same power brick on amazon so I was planning on replacing it but wanted to see if you had any troubleshooting suggestions before I purchased it. thanks!

So if it is saying connected that tells us that the usb port and the box are connecting, but it doesn't mean that the LEDs are getting power or are enabled. I am sure you did these things, but it's possible you glossed over something. Verify that the LED strip is plugged in. Look at the very first LED, if the strip is having mechanical issues that LED can still has some light coming from it. The Box can light up from the USB port alone, but that won't be enough to power the lights. Under the profiles tab check that the Device type selected is your device. If it is the same as mine than it would be 'Adalight'. If device is wrong, but the port is correct than it will still say connected but not work. Double check that 'Use Backlight' is checked, and that the number of zones is set correctly. Switch to 'Static Background' and pick something other than black to be sure it's just not showing black (which honestly, I have got worried about because the taskbar is black and it made me think those lights stopped working). If after all this it doesn't work, don't buy anything until you test it with Prismatik. Turn Ambibox off by switching Use Backlight off and then quit the app from the system tray. Try the program Prismatik (tutorial here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html). Let me know.

@@sixty-six I seem to have a similar issue, yesterday I didn't stick the rgb on my screen yet but simply tested it out by connecting everything & setting up the options - seemed to work fine. Now if I connect everything, it all stays black. If I first connect the power cable to the strip, about 30 leds go on (out of 132) and the rest stay off, then when I connect the strip to the box which is connected to my PC through USB - nothing changes. Even reinstalled the program and walked through the settings again. The LEDs just never seem to respond to my pc.

Huge thanks for this guide. One question though. Why are you using GDI FS Aero mode for the stream capture? I set up as you did and it never goes over 20fps, despite setting the limit to 60fps. I still found this had a bit of lag compared to what's on screen. I've changed it to Windows 8 mode and the fps is up nearer 60fps. This creates a much more synced screen capture without any noticeable delay.

I agree with you that Windows 8 mode has lower lag. I ended up sticking with GDI FS Aero after testing because I felt it had better color matching. I actually have both AmbiBox and Prismatik installed because I find the unofficial build of Prismatik to be even better than Window's 8 Mode on Ambibox. I have a tutorial for Prismatik as well ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html ). Depending on the content I want I use Ambibox for color accuracy and Prismatik for lower lag. How are you liking your Ambibox setup so far?

So have profiles for full screen, 16:9 and 2.35:1 for different films etc. I need to take a closer look at the colour representation with different modes I think if you're saying they're different. You can do multiple instances but I have seen conflicts doing it that way. I would recommend cunning longer strips. I have good luck up to 5 meters with a sufficient power supply. If you need to 'jump' between a monitor and other displays, art, or furniture there are ways to link strips that have been cut by thin wire.

Fantastic video and overview. I love this! With the packs that are available on Amazon/eBay that have this exact box, do any of them come with RGBW? The reason I ask is whilst the W part would be more expensive, it does mean that it wouldn't need to draw 3x the power. If so, does the software support RGBW?

Out of my stupidity I've started to setup the LED stripe from the bottom middle. And I couldn't find option for this in Ambibox. That's why I'am using Prismatik and it looks quite good and simplier.

What link are you using? This one ( ambibox.ru/ambibox_downloads/AmbiBox_setup_2.1.7.zip ) is working for me right now, but you can also try this: ambibox.software.informer.com/download/ which also just worked for me. If you are still having issues check out my Prismatik video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2IyTD1lADM.html ), which is an alternative program that does the same thing with the same light boxes. It requires you to look up the COM Port of your light box. You can do this by: 1. Plug the lightbox in. 2. Search in the start bar for "Open Device Manager." 3. Locate Ports (COM & LPT) in the list. 4. Unplug plug the light box in if there are multiple devices listed to see which one it is.

i recently got a stripe of leds with arduino, that works under ambibox. Everything runs great, but i noticed there is not dynamic rainbow mode, which for any rgb fan gamer out there is a no brainer. Do you know if there is a way to to this on settings or smthg?

If they do that with both AmbiBox and Prismatik and then remain uncontrollable than either the data and power ports are reversed (sometimes they are made with the same size inputs) or they hardware is having issues. I can't think of a software reason that would occur.

I set it up last night... everything worked just fined, later I went to bed and turned off my PC. When i booted it again this morning, the lights wouldn't light up anymore. I tried reinstalling the software and configuring it back again, I'm on the correct port and settings but they don't turn on anymore.

This specific solution requires a computer to be the source of the video. So steaming games and videos to a TV via HDMI works well if you are playing them on the computer running AmbiBox. It will not work with a smart TV's built-in apps. With other HDMI devices like consoles and streaming sticks (Roku, Fire, AppleTV), there is a way to do it, but it would still require a computer and some additional hardware that might not make it make sense cost wise. If you don't want to use a computer to play your content than there are alternative options that don't use AmbiBox. There are 'pass-through' solutions that connect a mini-computer like a Pi or an Arduino between the device (PS4) and your TV. The most popular consumer version of this is the Hue Play system. The colors match perfect and runs about $200-$250 for the controller box and then $45 to $70 per light, of which you will want at least 3. It looks amazing, and is priced like it. There used to be more consumer options in this category, but they seem to be perpetually out of stock. I have plans to do videos on these options. You can build it yourself, but one of the issues right now is that most DIY options sacrifice audio quality, screen video quality, or cost as much as the consumer solutions. If that doesn't fit what you want than there is a possible solution that is more than AmbiBox, but far less than the pass through options. Govee has a product coming that might work. It uses a camera facing the TV to capture the screen. Issue is, they won't anyone pre-order it. If people message them I telling them about this channel maybe we can get them to sent out review units or something. hello sir, i'm struggling to set up ambibox. My issue is that my led strip starts on the top left corner and offset moves the first led along the bottom from left to right like you show on your video. I can't find a way to put in on top corners. Do i have to manually move my 130 leds to set it up properly ? 😅 thx for the video !

i have downloaded the software at the link above that you have provided and i run setup and at the end i keep on getting "download failed: file not found (404) check your connections and retry again to try downloading the files again, or click next to continue installing anyway" i have tried the both thing downloading it again and continued with the install but the app is not working. i get it connected but that's about it, it does not do anything else from your tutorial video. i have checked other sited for this software download and the same thing happens. do you have any idea why this could be happening? or have another link to the software?

Last I tried, the Netflix app blocks screen overlays. That prevents screen captures from working. Try streaming directly from your web browser. It it works we would need a way to trick the app into thinking there isn't a screen capture going on. May or may not be worth the trouble.

Really depends on your setup . Play your music. then go to the windows speaker item and right click and select open volume mixer. Whichever labeled output is moving with the music is the one you need to choose in the program as the input. (general easy rule) not always applicable.
