I'm not sure if anyone has made this comment yet, but if you have users that are part of a group, you need to give that group access to the shared space too. Otherwise you can give your users full access and they still won't have any... Your videos have been a tremendous help!!! Keep up the great work!

New Synology user. Interesting information, thank you. As a former network implementer, I understand what you are talking about. In terms of sharing with people with limited understanding, I think the existing cloud services provide a better way to share for non techies. I have Onedrive, Box, Drop, Google and probably a couple others that I rarely use that are all easier. Some of indexing and facial recognition may be a plus.

@@WisamAlRawi I can't get it to work, despite some experience with Linux/Unix permissions. What I find is that it seems only Administrators can use shared space, not ordinary users, in Synology Photos. I'll keep trying but it's not looking good after a half a day playing around. The workaround might be to simply tell an ordinary user (not an Administrator) to use "Personal Space" and be careful as to what type photos they put in. Hang in there, they will index eventually. I had the same problem when I made the switch but tried it first on a “j” class machine (DS220j). Huge mistake! It just doesn’t have the processing power. Great video… as usual. As family Photo Management was my main reason for acquiring a NAS, I had some of this worked out. However understanding the use of the Shared Folder was great. Synology did a good job with Photos but missed the mark on a few things. Is there a place one can request new features? One of my biggest requests would be to have full logic control on conditional albums. For example, share all the pics of me with my wife less those where I am with my old girlfriends! 😜

Synology looks interesting. Thanks to your "Install Nextcloud on a RaspberryPi ", I've been using Nextcloud on a rapsberry pi 4 running on an SSD. It's great for syncing files and photos. Like you, I just dumped my 58,000 photos from the past 20 years then ran a dedup script. It does okay, not as easy as Google, but at least it's private. Makes it easy to share links to to individual photos, folders, or "favorites". I also like the Nextcloud client that works very similar as dropbox but with better features (like NOT requiring location sharing with a 3rd party upload).

I'm considering using this to collaborate with clients on photo albums. One of our small businessess biggest struggles is getting client feedback on the reordering of the chronology of photos. Would this allow us to share an album with clients for them to be able to drag and drop the photos into a different chronology. Would we then be able to lock in the new order by changing filenames before we exporting out and into our design software? -

@SpaceRex - Will, for a husband and wife with separate phones uploading photos and videos.... would you set it up for both devices to be uploaded to the Admin account photos? Or to individual users with a shared space? I don't want to be duplicating the photos and videos so both of us can access them. But you said that you don't want to be accessing or using the Admin account very much after initial setup, but photos upload and access is a daily thing. This video seems like you would be using the Admin account for all you photo storage... and not the "Will" user. ??

Great video as always. I’ve been using Photos to back up my photos for a little while now, but this video has made me think I have set it up incorrectly. On my NAS, I have a main admin user account that I used to do all the admin stuff. Then for Photos I use my “normal” non-admin user account - all my phone photo backups occur under my this account. I try to keep the admin account purely for admin. However I now realise that using Photos generally via my non-admin account, I am limited in what I can do. I can’t create a shared space for example. Is there a way of my non-admin user an admin only in Photos so my non-admin account has admin abilities only in Photos?

When you create a shared space and add photos, does it copy the actual photo or just a link. Example: you put 100 photos in from your collection so now they are taking up twice the space?
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 года назад
That’s actually a good question (that I actually do not know the answer to) I believe that if you have a BTRFS volume it should use the instant copy feature to reference the same data (if this is true you would not use more space)

@@SpaceRexWill Talked to 2 syno techs, according to them, it just creates a link. No space is used!
@tomgrey3046
@tomgrey3046 2 года назад
@@cyberwasp461 well, that was not that obvious in moments, actually, files are stored in home/drive/moments, /homes/username/moments, and shared content was/is stored in /photo/... When a phone was synced with moments, there was yet another subfolder created for every new device under /home/drive/moments/device_name. The /home & /homes are linked together (check file path in file properties), but /photo shared content is duplicated. I wonder then if Photos now solves this and shared space is not duplicated. That can take up or save a lot of storage space, especially when videos are in the libraries. I guess this might be checked very easily by comparing file paths in properties on DSM7. Can you look at it, guys?

I have a question. When I upload pictures to the NAS by using Synology Photos, I notice that the NAS puts them in my personal space. So far no problem. But I want the pictures to be put into subfolders on the NAS, so that all pictures that belong together, stay together in their own subfolder. Is that possible from within Synology Photos? I know that you can put them together in Albums, but I'd rather have them in subfolders too. Until now I upload the pictures manually via SMB-upload. But I was hoping that this could be done easier over Syn Photos.

Good video. Thanks. The key use of NAS for my family was keeping all the photos at one place. It is especially important when we travel and take the pictures by different devices. Manual sharing and collection at one place is always a headache. I do not like to use suggested approach with personal and shared space as there will be manual work by moving from one folder to another or duplication of pics. Instead I decided to use one "home media' user account and logged in all the family members on their mobile Syn Photo, then each decides if he/she wants to make full back up of the photos to NAS automatically from Iphone Photos or select pics manually. as we use the same account we see all the photos collected together with no manual work. The only challenge under such scenario is keeping the pics safe from accidental deletion by kids if they are logged in.

Where should I store all my family photos? Under "Home/Photos" or the shared root folder called "Photo"? If each one of my 4 family members has a user account? Right now, all my family photos are under the "Home/Photos" folder & we all long into the same admin user account. After learning more about security, it might be best if we each have our own user account into the NAS. However this is where things get tricky regarding accessing the family photos since there in the Home/Photos root folder. Can or should I just move all our family photos to the "Photo" root folder under file station - and everyone would have access to the "shared space" and each user would have thier personal space for backing up there iphone or whatever. Lasty, if the admin turns off Shared space, the root folder goes away - I don't loose my photos, do it?

Hi spacerex, Thanks very much for all of your videos. Very helpful. Do you know how to access backup file (.hbk) using smb if connected to same network where NAS backup exist ? I have setup backup and the backup created in a .hbk file within .hbk folder. I am able to view all of my files in .hbk file from DSM but unable to access from SMB as my MAC don't understand file type. Any help is appreciated.

Ah, the .hbk files have to be read by Synology software. You want to download hyper backup reader from synology on your Mac and then you should be able to read it

I have Synology on DSM 7.1. I have Photos set up and it works great for me. As the admin, I use QuickConnect for all of my personal access at home or outside the home. I set up a family member USER (brother) and he lives out of state. How can I get him a link to use that will allow him to access his shred folder. I have logged in as him here at homeland it all looks set up properly, he just needs to be able to log in.

Great video! I would like to backup my wife and my cell phone photos , apply facial recognition and create a SINGLE shared dynamic album about our son. Now I backup cell photo from each personal account, but can admin access to both personal photo backup folder (of me and my wife) with its Photo package to apply facial RECOGNITION and create a shareable unique dynamic album about our son ?

Hi @doesexistthisname, I asked Synology a similar question earlier this week and the short answer I received was no. In particular, my question was about whether I could share the AI/facial recognition date between users to save me having to manually identify the same faces on another user account. Can I suggest that you also put in a feature request for this: From Synology: [ If you have any further feature requests or idea's on how we can improve our software, feel free to submit these through our dedicated feature form online: www.synology.com/en-us/form/inquiry/feature Unfortunately, it isn't possible to provide a timescale as to when this may be included, but the more requests our developers receive for a specific feature, the greater the likelihood of implementation. ]

Thanks for the helpful info! This is exactly why I bought my NAS - To manage family videos and videos. I still have a question - How do I create Albums in the Shared Space for all users to see? I have two users (My Admin account, and my wife's account). I'd love to be able to create Albums as a way to organize our photos and give her access to it. Having to share every single Album seems cumbersome. Surely there's a way she can have access to the Albums I created in the "Albums" tab, right?

I cannot figure out how to give the family member the ability to “share” photos with anyone. The share icon does not show on the family member’s account despite me following all of the set up steps shown in this video? Is this just bad luck or am I missing a “take it for granted” step that I should know?

@@SpaceRexWill thanks. In the admin user the /photo root folder is the one which holds all the shared space photos. At the individual user (non admin) level they each have a /photo folder. At first I thought if each individual user were to copy files into their own /photo folder it would be found at the shared space in the client. But I tried dragging files into the /photo folder via file station n It didn’t work n prevented writing into thier own /photo folders. Subsequently, i discovered from the individual user’s synology photos client, if one were to drag n drop photos into shared space, I realised the admin user’s /photo folder will be modified.

Lost me at 1:30. You say that one needs to be in the Admin account to setup Photo sharing, but when you open up Photos, you are viewing photos in your Homes/User/Photo folder. How does that work? When I open my Photos package from the Admin account, I see the Admin's Photo folder, not the User's folder. I missed the step on how you instruct Photos to open a User's account (not the Admin's.) [Also, back on my desktop, I see my NAS with a Photos folder, but it shows what is in the Admin's folder, not the User's? Something is setup wrong, but I can't figure out what to change.]

@SpaceRex amazing video, thanks a lot! I want to have a backup of all the photos I capture with my mobile photo and the same from the phone of my wife. I did it using a common shared folder for both. The issue I have is when I capture a photo and then send it via for example whatsapp to someone I will have the photo two times appearing there (I have the option backup all folders enabled). Is there any possibility to avoid creating these duplicates without selecting the option backup only the DCIM folder? I want to have a backup of the whatsapp photos I receive but not the ones that I already have.. Thanks in advance for any answer!!!
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 2 года назад
Hmmm I don’t think that that is possible due to the fact that WhatsApp performs its own compression before sending the image, then because this image is compressed its different then the original and the synology cannot tell that they are the same to do de-dupe

@@SpaceRexWill Thanks for your super quick reply! The only way would then be to manually delete these pictures every now and then.. It is interesting that the "Storage analyzer" of synology can tough identify these duplciates but again one would have to go through all of them manually..

oh that's interesting that storage analyzer is able to pick it up. You might want to submit a ticket to synology as they might be able to add this feature without too much trouble

(EDIT: I upgraded to 1200 Mbps downstream, 40 Mbps up, and still the vids buffer as stated below. What's next ?) Why might my MP4 video clips in Synology Photos (shot in 4k 60) be playing back so poorly - constant buffering, choppy? Connected to a 920+ (SHR2) via SMB on my mac desktop. Upload speed 23 mbps. download 500 mbps. 14 TB of free space. In addition, the same videos just don't play back at all for users attempting to view these clips via a link on a mobile phone browser. Sigh. I had really high hopes.
