Loads of people new to the hobby end up choosing goldfish for the pure reason that it's the go to starter fish in some people's minds. But there are a host of far better temperate fish to choose from: Zebra Danio, White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Variatus Platy, and so many more!
In this video we go through the steps to set up and aquascape a coldwater fish tank and make it easy for you!

Thank you for clarifying aquascaping and what it is. I like natural scapes and not the fancy Dutch style scapes that some scapers like to do. I posted a picture of one of my tanks on a Facebook Group and a guy who claimed to be an aquascaper proceeded to tear apart my tank and instruct me on what I did wrong. Even when I explained I had been in the hobby 40 years and liked the natural style scapes he berated me. It made me angry because if I had been new to the hobby he could have turned me off. Instead, he had picked in someone that was willing to fight back a bit. He ended up telling me I was stupid and didn’t know what I was doing. Sadly, it is people like this guy that can so easily ruin the hobby for others. You are so right to say aquascaping is whatever you like your aquarium to be. I love seeing the artistic creations some people do, but I also think they have made the hobby very intimidating for others. I absolutely love your channel because it is aimed at everyone. You used Anubia, I was hoping you were going to use Buce on that dragon’s head. I like the Anubia too. I like the air pump. I generally use one in my tanks. Sometimes I will add a small sponge filter for the same reason. Love the bubbles. It is all about what makes you happy.

I hate people like this as without people coming into the hobby it will disappear. I'm glad you were strong enough to shrug it off, it's such a variable hobby there is never going to be one correct style.

Hey Matt, my mountain minnows and endlers love playing in the bubbles of the air stone. When I had a mystery snail, it would go and sit on the air stone for around ten minutes a day; snail wash? snail massage? No clue. Not sure why people wouldn't like air stones, they come in so many forms, you can even get "curtains" with LED lights, so cool. Thanks for the video, have a wonderful week.

Matt, the kit I'm always most jealous of which I see in your videos is your books. I have tons of books in my home, all of which I've read, but I don't have anything about fish. Someday I'm going to come to your house and sit in your fish room for a few weeks and do nothing but read your books and drool over them. When I get a call from home telling me that my aquariums are in dire need of help, only then will I leave, but not before I write down a list of the best of your books so that I can buy copies for myself!

I have to admit, to my shame, my first aquarium was un heated in the UK .It contained white clouds, zebra danios, and bronze corydoras. When it came time to clean the tank, I would empty all the fish into the bathtub, and then clean all the filter media and gravel in the sink using boiling water. I now realize that this was not a good practice!. As a treat, I would put hot water in the bathtub, not realizing that it was harmful to the fish, and would then wonder why they swam upside down. :( I should clarify that I was 13 years old at the time and had no guidance or help.

I don't know about goldfish being easy, they have a brighter looking life expectancy than me 😂 and never want to live in balance with what's around them. I found them really rewarding but got to the point where they were just too much work and found myself looking for problems rather than enjoying my tanks. This looks great matt, maybe airstones don't have a traditional place in an aquascape but I find them helpful in my planted aquariums. I Love your videos Matt you inspired me to get a 90L tank. I’ve fully upgraded the filter with better foams ceramic filter media etc and I’ve got 7 red and blue cherry shrimp 8 neons and 10 ember tetras and it’s not over stocked and I prefer lower quantities of fish, it looks so much more natural! I had also planted a lot of great plants (everything from Maidenhead aquatics 😎) and it looks amazing in my opinion for the first tank I have ever had before, I have a pond but that’s nothing compared to scaping an aquarium. I’d love to show you and see what your thoughts are! For a great dimmable light for cheap I went for the seaoura led light I can set how long its on. I can change the blue light intensity and the white light intensity or all together and it grows my plants amazingly! For £23 I’m not to disappointed

I must admit with multiple tanks and the cost of electricity nowadays I've started to turn my heaters down and changed a couple of tanks to unheated. It means I can still enjoy fish keeping without the cost being so high. I do love the air stone though and still use them in quite a few of my tanks. I have the golden variant of the white clouds in my minipond, and i love them. very active fish. however its not very easy to keep the right temperature for them, i had them with with room temperature before, and they all died in between 9 months. i guess they still had to warm and i read the prefere even a colder period every year. but i didnt have an open lid at this time, that can also make a difference with the temperature.

My only tank is a temperate tank. Sits at around 20-22 degrees but it does go lower in the winter. Currently it has white cloud mountain ninnows, odessa barbs and peppered corys in it. Got a good range of plants which are also thriving. Including Monte Carlo I think the gold variety of white cloud mountain minnows may have suited this tank a bit better as their colour would have complimented the orange sand and dragon stone Great scape. I was fearful for you at the start as that was a large piece of wood which can be tricky as you are at times limited on its positioning in a smaller tank.

When you next to a coldwater setup I would recommend paradise gourami as they are a wonderful and highly overlooked fish I just recently got some!!

Highlly Recommend that you presoak any wood that you place in a fish tank. Not only can it release a lot of tannins into the water,it will be cover in dust and micro organisms that may not be that good for small fish. I usually pour boiled water over any new wood and soak for 2days changing the water alteast twice. Maybe seems extreme but am not losing any fish because of a simple things that I could of done to prevent losing Fish.

I've never heard that air stones are bad in planted tanks. I've always had one in mine with or without Co2 injection & the only difference I notice is the plants that are in & near the bubble column grow faster.
