Thanks! This still works. Only problem I had was after ending set up I couldn't get internet thru the repeater. Just changed the encryption type (WPA Algorythms under the wireless security tab) on the repeater to AES to match the original access point and voila! It was fixed.

@ Jacob Foster: Thanks for a excellent tutorial, it was much needed. Especially when one considers that DD-WRT.com is inundated with antiquated write-ups, conflicting recommendations & so much data, till it's quite the task arriving at anything useful, well without blowing a brain-spring anyway ! That & the fact that the Mods & Senior-Users are burnt to where a guy's basically on his own. So yeah your video was met with a sigh of relief, because after reading DD-WRT's 'Rules/Guidelines to Posting' write-up, then 'The Peacock Thread' & all 'Thee Announcements' & the write-up on 'CFE Backups' & on & on & on with the "Required Reading". Till I was NOT anticipating searching through that mess for another 36 hours, all in hopes of finding something half as precise as your video. However, one point did arise. After I renamed & changed the IP of my repeater, then waiting a full 4 mins, I noticed I was unable to log in at the new or old IP & I had been connected via Cat-5 from jump. So I opened a Win-7 'Elevated Command Prompt' & typed ipconfig /flushdns & I was good to go. Thanks for the upload/share(you made it clear & easy). PS: Now I'm not hating I'm just stating, it's too bad some Super-Mod over at DD-WRT or its WIKI wouldn't consider stickin this video up their sticky section. X

All these fucksticks giving you crap, but I bet most of them set-up their router to your video. I thought it was very well done, and I'd like to thank you for taking the time to put this up as it was very helpful.

Nice video, Jacob. I get a lot of questions from DD-WRT users about doing this with Tomato firmware. The main difference is that Tomato doesn't currently offer a "repeater" mode like DD-WRT. But you can still bridge the connection between two (or more) routers with WDS mode and extend your WiFi coverage that way. Whenever possible, I'll use the 5GHz band in WDS mode and use the 2.4GHz band in AP mode for wireless clients. This way, you can take advantage of the 5GHz throughput between the two routers and reduce latency during the hop to the wireless clients on either end. It works out pretty nice and makes for a solid connection.

Thanks for this video. This worked for me. My dd-wrt is the micro and its on a WRT-54G ver 6. I didn't have the Site Survey screen or the screen that lets me see mac and connection quality as you show it near the end of your video. I'm glad I kept this old router however the wireless is slow compared to my ASUS RT-N66U. Now that's it configured I should only have to make small changes based on what I am trying to repeat. Great video, very informative. I don't recall if it was mentioned in the video but making sure the ap router and repeater are broadcasting same signal.....my ap router was sending b/g/n and my repeater is b/g only. After several days and a huge hammer later I switched my ap to b/g only and VIOLA....my daughter can play xbox in her room :) (don't have any n devices at the moment anyway....cross that bridge when we get there). Huge thanks again.

Just open networks and sharing center. Open change adapter settings. right click local area connection. Click on properties double click (TCP/IPV4). Click on use the following ip addresse. Make the ip addresse the same as you router subnet mask should set it's self when you click on it. Use tftp.exe to upgrade dd-wrt. Watch the video and do what he says. I hope this helps alot of people😁

Great, helped me to get my TP-Link router working.

He is right about the repeater and bridge being the same thing because I'm just useing repeater with the Ethernet plugged into my pc.and it's easier to update too dd-wrt if you use tftp.exe to install it.

Make sure you go into the admin tab and restore defaults before doing this! I spent hours trying to get it to work and it wouldn't until I reset to factory settings! best /easy way to do this is to do Status>Wireless > Site Survey > Then click join on the side of the wireless connection you want to connect to... wait for the screen to say continue then it will bring you to a new screen... change it from client to repeater.. and add your virtual network!

Don't forget to set the security mode to WPA or WPA2 on the repeater side, you can't let it decide. Has to match the router!

difference between repeater . .and repeater-bridge is that with repeater, you will continue to use the (repeater router) 's ip address/ gateway.. . with the repeater-bridge mode, it will turn off hte "repeater routers" dhcp server, and you will be bridged to the target router .. and recive its Ip address, and be bridged to that network.

great stuff bud, finally i can use old wifi to get stronger/repeated signal from my home to my garage. But 13:30 whats the difference between wireless mode Repeater / Repeater Bridged and those 2 selections of Unbridged or Bridged beneath SSID and AP? Finally someone explains all this properly, but my booboo was not using EXACT password authentication as WPA2 personal TKIP+AES, I'm using as Repeater Bridge successfully finally. My WAN IP shows Disabled, but none the less, seems its all working fine now. So will it only work with ethernet cable, or will it actually work with stronger/repeated wifi signal now?

Thanks so much! I was able to configure the router as a repeater. Next step is to set it up as a repeater bridge so I can use the ethernet ports as direct connections (printer). For some reason, the WAN showed as "disabled" (instead of an IP address or 0.0.0.0) when I set it as a repeater bridge instead of just repeater. Was anyone successful in setting up a repeater bridge using this tutorial? If so, what physical interface settings did you use? Tip for those using this tutorial to connect a router to a jetpack: I had to change the wireless network mode to "G-Only." Mixed network mode would not work. Thanks again!

This is great. I have a old router and it is capable. Now I can plug my repeater router anywhere away from the host router? Like I have my host on a second floor, so I can plug the repeater on the main floor. Because my basement struggles for signal.

Outstanding video. Thanks a ton for it. Everything seems to be working perfectly as long as Main Router and Repeater are physically connected. As soon as i disconnect them from each other I cannot access the repeater nor connect any devices to it. Can't find the answer on the web. What am i doing wrong please? I have removed all security. The phone i am using to connect with, will connect when they are connected. But will not when the repeater and router are not connected. Thanks again.

I used your tutorial and changed my Linksys WRT310N router to a repeater. The issue I am having is that if I put wireless security on the repeater it will not work. My network is on WPA2-PSK I used WPA2 personal for the repeater. Any ideas on how I can make this repeater work with security? By the way your tutorial is very good. Thanks

I wasn't sure of the original ssid of the router so I put in what I thought was the original, then when I applied settings, the router doesn't show up anymore for wifi access.

I followed the instructions. It works, but even with 100% signal strength It is SUPER slow. Any clue?

On setup up tab, basic setup section, don't we need to provide the IP for Access Point (AP) router as a gateway and also don't we need to make sure the subnet mask matches with the AP router's subnet ? Plus do we need to disable the DHCP server on DD-WRT enabled router? Is there any way to if a device or client is connect to Internet using the original connection (through AP router) or through repeater ? Sorry for too many questions :) just wanted to clarify myself.

Hey, great video, really helpful. But whenever my router reboots it stops giving off a wireless signal, and I can't get into the configuration page through the ethernet cable either. I have to do the 30/30/30 hard reset to make it work and when I do it resets all my settings. Suggestions please?

Ok so it is repeating my router signal but I want to give it its own ssid which it looks like you can with the virtual interface. But is it broadcasting the gateway ssid and the virtual ssid simultaneously?

Hey dude! Great video!! I read through the comments and didn't see anyone having this issue. Followed all the steps in the video, and as long as my laptop is hardwired to my repeater, I have full internet access. When I remove the ethernet cable, and try to connect via wifi, the laptop connects, but I get the "no internet" yellow yield sign. I have the full bars icon, but it just won't pass internet. My tablet also hangs on the "connecting" phase. I've disabled security on the repeater just to try and connect. Any ideas?

I named it the same as LinksysE2000 the same name as my main linksys router, which maybe where I went wrong. Now I can't get back into the 198.168.69.1 to make changes. Accessing DD-WRT remotely. I am trying to access the DD-WRT and some devices attached to it's ports remotely. Originally my main router was a Linksys WRT546 and I found by setting up port forwarding on the WRT54G to point all incoming messages to 192.168.1.23 (ie. 8080 to 23, 8090 to 23)and then setting up port forwarding on the DD-WRT to point to the specific ip address of the connected device (ie 8080 to 250 and 8090 to 245) I got the desired result. Then I shifted to a Cisco RV082 Dual Wan router and everything fell apart. I have set up port forwarding and access rules on the RV082 without any luck. Any thoughts? I have set the DD-WRT as a reapter, maybe I need to switch it to a repeater bridge? Thanks

I'm using a DIR-825. And there is no option for "Repeater" or "Repeater Bridge." Where yours says that, mine says "WDS Station" and "WDS AP." Suggestions?

I corrected my security issue by using the properties tab in networking and making the router the same as my network now I have lost my WAN address on the repeater. Does anyone have an idea?
