In this video I'm going to demonstrate How To Setup WordPress Multisite.

A WordPress multisite network is similar to your own personal version of WordPress.com. Users of your network can create their own sites on demand, just like end users of WordPress.com can create blogs on demand. If you do not have any need to allow end users to create their own sites on demand, you can create a multisite network in which only you, the administrator, can add new sites.
A WordPress multisite network is a collection of sites that all share the same WordPress installation. They can also share plugins and themes. The individual sites in the network are virtual sites in the sense that they do not have their own directories on your server, although they do have separate directories for media uploads within the shared installation, and they do have separate tables in the database.
I will also cover the process of configuring your wp-config.php file and your .htaccess file.
I'll walk you through the process of how to create a brand-new site and also how to network activate themes and plugins as well as maintaining and updating the various WordPress themes and WordPress plugins on your site network.

I have to say, there aren't many people who can explain this kind of stuff as good as you. Well done! I too had a problem with not having the network option appear on Tools. But as I found somewhere in the comments below, that happens when you copy paste the code, instead of writing it yourself. Just added that in this comment for people who have the same issue, but might not find the same comment I had found... ;)

Yeah, some of the videos I create are extremely long. This one is actually short in comparison to some of my others. And I'm working on a new Theme Development Tutorial that's going to be crazy long. Seriously detailed. Such long videos can be intimidating but it's hard to ensure the information presented will be beneficial if it's not detailed. Hey. No, you wouldn’t give them the same user credentials as you. You would be the super admin and they would only be able to be an admin of their site. You can control the whole network, they can only manage theirs. I should probably do another video specifically on how to administer a network for performance and security.

created the multisite configured subdomain all up and running, now I like have a the subsite as same of the main site but i will translate and configure few different plugin so that can be focused on brazilian clients, the main site will be focused on usa clients so it will be same business, same products but each one having a different configurations to adapt to each country. can you help ? do you have a tutorial demonstrating that ?

I have followed the steps, and discovered I have a different issue. I can "add a new site" but when I click onto the dashboard of the sub-sites it brings me to a default page "Cannot be found". I thought it was a hosting issue but my hosting company says it is not a hosting issue. Do you have some ideas what I did wrong? Please advise. Thanks!

Hi. Yes. You would need to either use a migration plugin like Duplicator. I have a video on how to use it. You would also need to change the references to the urls to make sure they reflect the directory change. If you’re looking to import the site into a Multisite then there are a few extra steps. Maybe I can do a video on that. Before doing anything, always backup your primary site. Also, what type of hosting are you using?

Ok, make sure you're in the Super Admin section. Refresh your browser and remove the cache. Log out of your website and log back in. If that still doesn't work, then log into your control panel from your web host, then head over to your file manager and make sure your htaccess file is correct and your wp-config file is correct. If it is and things still aren't working then uninstall multisite using the video tutorial I made and start over. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mBgibIFF3e0.html

Hi thanks for your video. I have some problem after setup it. when I over on My Sites menu I didn't see new sites that I created but in the list sites I saw it have already. one more thing when i click to view on homepapge or Dashboard new site it massage This site can’t be reached. so what is the problem?

Troubleshooting a Multisite Installation can be tricky. First, refresh your browser and delete your browser cache. Logout and log back into your site and see if everything is in order. If not, then make sure you have all the correct tables for a Multisite Setup. wp_site wp_sitemeta wp_blogs wp_blog_versions wp_signups wp_registration_log If you don't see those tables, then watch the video I created on how to uninstall WordPress Multisite and then start over with installing Multisite. Make sure to prep your site for the installation by disabling all plugins. As always make sure to take a full backup of your website. Note: Others have had issues with copying code because of formatting issues with their text editors. It's recommended to type out the code exactly as demonstrated. Hopefully this helps.

Joseph Norori good question, are they parked? It shouldn't impact it but always err on the side of caution and take a backup of everything. If something goes wrong you can restore from a backup. I also created a video on how to properly remove Multisite. So check that video out too. Let me know how it goes.

Yes they are parked domains, i have 4 parked domains. I did a full site backup with inmotion wizard backup just in case. The support team told me several minutes ago, that it shouldn't affect the add-on domains or parked domains. Lets see

Just wanted to reply! For anyone having doubts, it works! I have no issues with my parked domain, installed as a sub-domain in my root folder. Thanks for the help. thumbs up for you! Btw. The only concern was that, if you activate multi-site with an existing website, you can't choose sub-directory option, you will only be able yo use, sub-domain sites. Just in case.

thanks so much for this video! I am however stuck on a particular part because I can't understand the word your saying in the video.. (im not a coder or anything savey so i'm literally using this video for step by step ) - when I get to the part of the video where you talking about the code we enter.. the action that you say to take before writing the word "true" ... i can't understand that word your saying. define( 'WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true ); is what I put but the new tool thats supposed to pop up in wordpress isn't poppin up.. Are you in the main site for the multisite setup? Go to the top toolbar and on the left hand side you will see a link saying My Sites. From there go to Network Admin link and then navigate to the plugins section. Then network activate the plugins you want available on all sites.

Hi there. Thank you very much for this video. I am still experiencing a problem. After I edited the wp-config.php and the .htaccess files, I can not login to my Dashboard again. I use the correct username and password but it takes me to the default WordPress page as a blog and not into my Dashboard. How do I fix this? Thank you

Hi Lara, have you tried clearing your browser cache or trying a different browser? Sometimes cache can cause an issue. If that's not the case, then follow the steps in my other video on how to uninstall Multisite and then start over. Sometimes there might be an issue with the htaccess file that you might not have caught. Let me know.

Might be the htaccess file. Make sure it's properly configured. Revert to a backup by reversing the steps. I have a video on how to go from a multisite setup to a regular setup. It's part of the Multisite playlist. Let me know how it goes.

Hi Kamila, Did you place the code in the wp-config.php file and save it? The code is shown at the 3:56 point. Also make sure you refresh your browser and you might need to clear your browser cache.

Hmmm, it shouldn't impact it. Let me double check on my test environment. Did you clear your browser cache? Also, try logging in from a different browser and see if you can view it.

Hi, I double checked and even if you upload the first code snippet from your wp-config.php file to enable multisite without disabling the plugins, you should still be able to see the Network Setup in the tool section. At that point, you should get a notice before setting up the network to disable the plugins. I'm going to do a video on how to uninstall WordPress Multisite. It should be up by tomorrow.

Good question, while the size of the server being 3 terabytes, you could definitely hold a lot of websites on it with little storage issues for a very long time unless you're also storing large 4k videos on the server which I wouldn't recommend. As for the speed, it depends on a few factors. What type of drives does your server use? SSD Drives are faster. How much RAM is available? RAM plays an important role in server performance. What type of CPU is being used? A true server CPU is recommended to ensure uptime. You also want to make sure it's a powerful CPU that can handle processing for the web server. How fast is your network? Throughput is important, both download and upload performance. Then you also have to consider how many concurrent connections you have. This is not really controllable, and more is better, but concurrent connections also strain the server, hence why fast, modern software is beneficial. Also, the theme you're using and the plugins installed will impact performance. There's a lot that goes into it but these are some things to consider.

PixemWeb thank you , this clears a lot of things. I will upgrade the ram in the future but for now I will run 2 sites for testing. All videos are hosted somewhere else. I use as little plugins as possible. Just one more question. I use professional templates that have an activation code or license. Just wondering if this could cause a conflict, Working with Wordpress multisite. Can wait to test this out.

Hello there, I do not see the in my htaccess file. it is something like this.. # BEGIN WordPress # The directives (lines) between `BEGIN WordPress` and `END WordPress` are # dynamically generated, and should only be modified via WordPress filters. # Any changes to the directives between these markers will be overwritten. # END WordPress so what to do now? thanks

I keep getting the message under Network Setup 'Warning: Please deactivate your plugins before enabling the Network feature.' I deactivated and deleted all my plugins. Is there something I am doing wrong?

Hi Pixem, why do you have to disable plugins before installing multi-site?

It’s just a precaution. All plugins are different and some run at different points. So disabling them will ensure a smoother transition. Sometimes it doesn’t matter and other times it does.

Very good explanation, thx but in my case I use a theme not from WP, how can I copy the same theme, Plugins etc, ? I need a Multisite for languages and Intranet, is it possible to do it?

please help me as i m doing the process i get this in network setup for subdomain and subdirectory i see this message "Because your installation is not new, the sites in your WordPress network must use sub-domains. The main site in a sub-directory installation will need to use a modified permalink structure, potentially breaking existing links."

Why sub-directory over sub-domain? Will I be able to place a separate site under a completely separate domain name using sub-directory?

fn ads! I'm still not clear on this structure... Is it to consolidate more than one website you own into one platform or is it a directory of sub-sites added under a main website?

It can be for multiple websites you own or you can create your own managed hosting service like WPEngine does or others. You charge people to host and manage their site. It’s also great for freelancers who manage their clients sites.

@@PixemWeb Understood, Thanks. So I have 6 WP sites all with different logins. Domains are registered with different providers, hosting is with one provider. If I activate multisite, it would eliminate me having to log out and log into each admin site when I need to make small changes, updates etc...
