This tutorial was very clear and helped me mentally piece together other wallet DIYs that I've seen. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how everyone was creating beautifully finished seams on their pocked with the main pieces needed to be turned inside out for the finished garment. This tutorial helped me understand that I first need to layout the pattern to confirm on which ends I need to have the seams remained unfinished for the pockets until time to add the main wallet pieces.

Thank you for this wallet. I'm new sewing and it was really helpful follow all the process. I need to say that maybr my interfacing was too bulky. Also I wanted the inside with a plain color and on the moment of cut all pieces I felt a bit lost, which one on your video is the "linning". Finally I saw it was the blue. Well as i said I'm new and I made mistakes. Second try will be better. ;) thx and get one vistual hug.

This is a pretty great and wonderfully easy pattern, HOWEVER, I highly recommend getting a VERY THIN INTERFACING. Alternately, perhaps you could skip the interfacing on the credit card pockets? That would get rid of 6 layers of interfacing, so I imagine it would help thin the wallet out, yet maintain form and function. I followed the video and used interfacing where it suggests. I used Pellon 808 (which I thought seemed thin enough, and it's what I had on hand) and standard cotton fabric. My finished wallet really wants to burst open because it's so thick. I haven't even tried closing it with stuff in it yet. :-/

@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 лет назад
This is a great idea for gifts! And it actually doesn't take too long to make. The trickiest part is sewing through a bunch of layers so I would recommend using a denim needle and taking it slow for the final sandwich. You can do it! :)

@ProfessorPincushion 8 лет назад
yay! I'm so glad to hear that. It does get thick so I would recommend a denim needle for getting through it. Or you can use less pockets or someone also said that using heat n bond instead of interfacing helps cut down on the thickness so it's easier on less expensive machines. good luck for your students! :D

I made one of these and like some others, did not back the credit card pockets...but the corner was still too thick. I just didn't like the look of it. I thought about it all night and decided to open it again and trim the seam allowance closer to the stitching. It turned out beautifully!!! I need to make 4 for my youngest grandchildren. It's a fun project especially because they are coming out so nicely! Thank you for the wonderful directions.

@shannon2998
@shannon2998 6 лет назад
i know you said this years ago but for thicker fabric, like quilting cotton, you use either very thin interfacing or no interfacing at all.
@jesusfirstto-the-pointendt4552
@@shannon2998 Greetings! Very true Shannon. I believe that seems to be what interfacing is for - simply to make up for thinner fabric used or dont use it at all if the fabric is thick enough. Peace to you and yours!

I totally agree with the last comment I followed every instruction step by step after 4 hours working on it because I really wanted the wallet t come out neat. Anyway the wallet is too thick and unusable. I do suggest less interfacing maybe no interfacing for the credit card pockets they make the wallet too thick.
@ProfessorPincushion

Great stuff, I've been looking for a tutorial on DIY wallets! However, I like having two pockets in my wallet, one for bills and one for receipts etc. Can another one be added?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 лет назад
yup, you can totally add another pocket. Just layer it on the main wall piece when you're basting the pockets into place. Just realize that the more pockets you do, the thicker it gets to sew through. If your machine has a hard time sewing through a lot of layers or heavy duty fabrics, it might struggle through the thickness. Definitely use a heavy duty needle like a denim needle :)

Great pattern. Thank you. I did find a mistake though. On the diagram in the beginning of the video, the lg pocket piece was 8 x 10 1/2. Then later in the video, you started it was 81/2x10 1/2. I found that the later measurement must be the correct one as I had to short change my last credit card piece when sewing it down to make enough room. If you could make the correction at the beginning, it could save the loss of fabric and confusion. Thanks again, I will be making this again.☺

Very nice. I have a friend I'd like to make one for his birthday coming in a couple weeks. Now I just need to find fabric because I already have the zipper. If you were going to embroider initials on this wallet, where would you place the initials? And, at what step would you do the embroidery?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 лет назад
I would do it on the piece that would be designated as the main wallet piece-front, that way it'll be on the outside of the finished wallet. Do it before sewing the wallet sandwich, where everything is being place together but you can temporally pin the sandwich together, wrong sides together, fold things up just to get a placement on where you want it to be. Just make sure it's out of the seam allowance area. good luck! :)

Made 2 wallets with this pattern so far. First one with no interfacing--too flimsy. Second one with a lighter weight interfacing & quilting cotton, worked out fine for me. I like this pattern overall, but will make my next one with a couple changes. First i will try sewing the card pockets on before basting the large pocket together. I didn't mind that you could see the card pocket stitching through the bill fold, but i figure this wouldn't be a difficult step to integrate & this way the stitching will be hidden. Also the card pockets were a bit too wide, so i sewed an extra couple of vertical lines parallel to the one she shows in the video. If you have the same issue & do this too, just keep in mind the seam allowance on the left side that comes later (i had to undo one line because of this & it left some stitching marks.) Another thing i had to do was trim the final seams before turning the wallet out in the last step. Otherwise i would not have been able to do a proper top stitch as it would have been way too bulky to do so. I ended up carefully trimming the seams around the finished wallet, & trimming one layer at a time around the part with the card pocket seams. This did help in making the top stitching look much neater. Overall i quite like this pattern & will make more wallets with it, since it's simple enough to fashion for kids & grownups, doesn't use up too much fabric (scrap-buster) & includes the cute little zipper coin pouch. My main recommendation if you're trying it out, is to make your first one with fabric you don't mind wasting-- this project needed a test run for me to get it right, & judging by the comments, a few others didn't like how their first one turned out. A lighter interface for woven fabrics was enough for my liking without being too heavy. Something like a Pellon 911FF, Pellon es114, or the like.

laminated cotton, but I would not add any interfacing as it doesn't need it. because this fabric is stiffer, it might be a little more difficult to work with and you might want to do 2 pockets instead of 3 just to cut down on some of the thickness.

How would I attach elastic that would replace the Velcro closer?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 6 лет назад
I'd baste both ends of the elastic on the edge of the outer wallet section, before the lining. So when you add the lining, the elastic is sandwiched between the two fabrics. When it gets flipped right side out, the elastic will then be on the outside.

I did this wallet twice and had to toss it both times. Even though I did not use interfacing it was still way to thick and impossible to fold. The first time the cc measurements were off, but the second I did them correctly but that wasn't the problem. The process was very stressful and wasteful.

Wow! I wondered why you didn't show turning this wallet right side out. Now I know why, there's no way I can get this thing turned!!! Not happy 😒

It becomes very bulky at the place where the card pockets are attached. Broke my needle.

Can I use batting ??
@ProfessorPincushion

it might make it too thick and hard to turn out. if you try, maybe use a thin cotton batting

I loved this wallet, I was confused on my pocket pieces for the credit cards I measured everything exactly, but when I measured 3/4down then 5/8 down on the third piece was hanging off the wallet about 1 inch. I watched the video and for the life of couldn't figured out what I did wrong. Anyone else have this problem?

Just line up the last credit card pocket with the bottom edge. As long as the pockets are cascading, it should be fine :)

I totally ducked this up. I think the interfacing was too thick and then when I flipped it the side with the coin pocket was too thick, not flat.

The original size was 8", later changed to 8 1/2"

I made this wallet. I don't like that it is too thick to fold. There needs to be an edit. Instead of cutting the interfacing the exact size of the pattern piece, use half the size of the large pocket and the credit card pockets. Also, the interfacing may need to not be included in the seam allowances.

Is it just me or does the template say 8 by 10 and a half for the large but then she says 8 and a half by 10 and a half!!

The description has all the pattern measurements

Your measurements all seem to be incorrect which has created much confusion in completing this project. If you're going to leave it on RU-vid, you should make the measurement corrections instead of letting the subscriber figure it out through trial and error.

Yes, we realized our mistake and went through all the patterns. We just updated the description and it has all the correct pattern dimensions. I'm sorry that my mistake has caused you frustration. :( I hope you're still able to make yourself a nice wallet!

Warning ! DONT USE THICK INTERFACING! It won’t flip correctly.
