Sewing with minky can be intimidating and sometimes a little frustrating. But in this video I show how to sew a minky baby blanket, and include tips on sewing with minky to make it less frustrating!
This blanket finishes at approximately 29” wide by 35” long, but may vary depending on your minky’s WOF (width of fabric) and how generous of a yard your minky was cut to.

I thought I would share a tip with you about sewing with Minky that has saved me so much time and aggravation. This is such an awesome idea that I didn’t come up with but it’s brilliant! All you do is square up one of your minky to what ever size you need it to be and the other one will need to be about 3/4” - 1” larger all the way around. Lay the larger piece face up and the smaller one face down. Take a strip of press n seal and and tape all the way around your blanket. Use a 3.5 in stitch length and sew all the way around. This eliminates all the shifting and puckering and NO PINS needed! It also eliminates all the shedding. Once you have it sewn, just pull the press n seal off. It does not leave any residue and you have a beautiful a blanket. I hope you can use this tip.

This is the best demo I’ve seen about sewing with minky fabric. But I have decided never to use minky again. I really wish I would have seen this video before I attempted to sew a baby blanket, mine was a total failure.

I always like to remind people that even when you wash it don't try to iron over that minky or all the little bubbles will be gone but it sure turned out adorable I love the colors

It is so nice to see that I am not the only one who has to stop for doggie loving! I just saw a video on how to work with minky, so I haven't tried it yet, but they pinned two staggard rows of pins parallel to the edges instead of a ton of perpendicular, like you and I, and they seemed to have extreme success in eliminating shifting. I am going to try this since it is much less pins! I am also going to go get some "press and seal wrap" at the grocery store tomorrow as well! I have a couple minky blankets to make, so I am going to experiment with all 3 ways on a smaller scale to see what works best! My mom always taught me (I am 54 now) that I need to do a mini version of whatever I am making so I can figure out the best way! She comes from an era where wasting a bunch of fabric because I didn't practice first was HORRIBLE! If it's "new to me" fabric, I will test with that, but if it's construction, I better be using cheap fabric or muslin! HAHA! I will let you know how my experiments come out! Oh yeah, they said to only use polyester thread as well!

Super adorable. I’ve sewed a lot with Minky, love it but it’s messy and you have to be careful like she mentioned about the fabric moving. All in all, very nice job.

I tried making a minke blanket last night for my god child and omg 😱 I am so frustrated I swore I would never see again bc now I know I didn’t use enough pins! I wish I had seen ur video before I started. Thank you 🙏 I may try again

😫 Glad I could help at least for next time! 😊 It can be so infuriating with how much minky shifts! Excessive pinning really does make a world of difference though! I don’t typically pin this much with any other project, but minky is just so slippery. Hope you have a better time next on your next attempt! 🙏🏻

Angie, this is helpful info, and you do great work! I'm curious if you share with your customers that your pet is around your fabric? I say this because of severe pet dander allergies some children have and not knowing your dog is in the room where you work could be problematic. I share this from personal experience.

Do you tack down the middle of the blanket?
@AngieKT327
@AngieKT327 4 месяца назад
Not for small blankets like this. For larger blankets, like twin size, I have but even then I didn’t find it truly necessary.

Would it work to use flannel on one side with the Winky? Great video. Thanks
@AngieKT327
@AngieKT327 Год назад
Yes flannel would work great too. I would just pre-shrink the flannel before sewing because it can shrink a lot when you wash it while minky doesn’t shrink at all. I either just wash the flannel before sewing, or I spray it liberally with a water spray bottle and then toss it in the dryer on high heat and that’ll do the trick too 😄

Do you have a magnet on your machine that you put your little scissors on?
@AngieKT327
@AngieKT327 Год назад
Yes, it’s just a small but fairly strong magnet that I stuck on the bobbin winder. I still lose my snips occasionally but not nearly as often as I used to! 🤣🤣 although I probably would avoid if your machine is computerized at all, just in case

I did! I may make a video on how to make one, although I’ll probably change it up a bit from mine. I used way to firm of interfacing and it was super hard to turn right side out 😂

Do the minky materials need to be pre-washed before you sew them together
@AngieKT327
@AngieKT327 4 месяца назад
No, it’s not necessary. Since minky is made from polyester material it won’t shrink when you wash it. It does have a weird feel to it, in my opinion, like makes my hands feel almost grimy- like it had a coating on it during production or something, so I definitely recommend washing it at some point before using the blanket. But whether that’s before sewing or after sewing doesn’t really matter.

I noticed you kept saying minky on one side and minky on the other side but from here it looks like flannel on the print side and yellow minky on the back side so please explain why you called them both minky
