How to sew a princess seam , quick, easy, and perfect every time
Have you ever sewn a princess seam? I absolutely love the fit that they provide for any shape of body.
They make it so much easier to get a great fit on a close fitting bodice when you have a full bust.
If you are like me and have a small bust, these seams give you a lovely decorative affect too.
Today I’m going to show you my technique for sewing them, so that you will get a beautiful drape and fit every time!

I find snipping the seam allowance of the straighter side (centre front) helps to sew round as well.

That's really a great tip! I'm going to be making a wedding dress for a 16" doll and will certainly keep this in mind 😸 Thanks! (Your channel content is right up my alley; I'm a life time sewist but I'm rusty and need my memory refreshed 👵😁 and I'm drooling over your career😊)

Love this video, super helpful ! Currently drafting my wedding dress with princess seams. A lot of resources say to clip into fabric of seam allowance on inward curve to help join the two. Do you recommend avoiding this for a wedding dress ? Thank you :)

Thank you, I’m glad you found is video helpful. Clipping the seam allowance on inward curves can be helpful when attaching it to another shape. There are two things to keep in mind before you do this though. Number one, if you clip before you sew, the fabric is more likely to fray and unravel and you absolutely must catch enough seam allowance that the notch is securely on the seam allowance side of your stitchline. Especially on thin and delicate Bridal fabrics it can be tricky to protect your fabric from fraying. Second, The fabric will turn or open up at each notch, this can cause your princess seam to have little corners on the curve rather than a smooth edge. Picture an octagon or something like that. It’s easy to end up sewing multiple flatter sections of seam in between the notches rather than a consistent curve. As long as you avoid these two pitfalls it can be a good method to use.

Hi, can I do gathering stitches and then ease in just like sleeve head?

How would you do this for a straight across neckline strapless princess bodice?

Since the princess seam is just the vertical seem that runs over the bust. The same tips are relevant regardless of the shape of the neckline. This is my never fail technique I use on every type of princess seam gown, even high neck princess seam gowns or gowns with cut on straps.

Can we add boning to princess seams
@sewwithchelsea
@sewwithchelsea Год назад
Yes, you defiantly can. Most strapless dresses have it. Just be very careful not to sew it in to tight. You almost want to have the feeling you are easing the dress to the boning. Otherwise, the boning pushes out and makes a sharp edge again along the seam.

What is the best place to add bonings only with an intention to give structure and at the same time to ensure in any case it doesn't pushes out...
