- Outside fabric: (1) 8.5" x 22" OR (2) pieces 3" x 22" and (1) piece 3.5" x 22"
- Lining fabric: (1) 8.5" x 22" and (1) 3.5" x 22" (Pencil flap)
- Tie: Cut one strip 1.5" x 38"
- Binding: Cut two 2.5" x WOF strips and sew end to end

This is such a cute fabric combination! So I was thinking about buying a pencil holder but then I thought "I could make one maybe instead of spending money cause I have a lot of fabric" and I'm so glad I found this video! It is very helpful and inspirational.

I just finished making one but supersized to hold 100 pencils. I substituted the tie for Velcro and found that my pencils were a little bigger then the 3/8th marks. But over all very happy. Thank you for the base pattern!

Super helpful tutorial, I'm not a new sewist but I thought it would be prudent to just watch a tutorial or two before I trundled off to make this project and I'm glad I did! You had a few suggestions that I hadn't thought of and now I'm eyeing my fabric stash (and cabbage patch) with renewed interest!

I made this last night for my daughter. It turned out great! The instructions were all very clear. I've made several quilts before so that probably helps. I imagine someone who has never bound anything might doubt themselves, but this is a really great project to learn binding on! My daughter loves it for her colored pencils :) Thank you!

Thank you this was so incredibly clear on what to do. I just ordered the temp spray adhesive from a different brand and some one-inch elastic also different brands. Making for my daughter so she can bring colored pencils on a trip. She actually likes them in a gallon zip lock so she can see them all. But in a car, this would be disastrous. :0) Yup.. a trip you got it right as soon as Covid is over I'm planning a trip every year for the rest of our lives at Christmas time.

I am making one out of a mesh screen door that i had left over. Attaching strips on top to make taking pens and pencils out easier. adding batting and a piece of material to the back to make it look nice. thanks for the ideal. Im not putting elastic. Wish me luck.

I'm sorry if I missed this,but how many slots will this have?My daughters have close to 300 fancy pencils that need to be taken care of. The roll up looks so cute.I plan on making it tomorrow as I just bought some felt. I will probably use velcro instead of ties,as I have so much. Thank you!

It kind of depends on what type of pencils you put in, but I fit about 48 colored pencils in mine.

As long as your lining and outside fabric are all the same size you can make it any size you like :)

WOF is usually about 42” for quilting cotton. It’s selvage to selvage and can vary depending on the manufacturer

Would it work to leave the elastic flat, maybe make your stitch lines a little further apart. Is there a reason we have to sew “bumps”?

The bumps are what hold the pencils. If you don't sew bumps the elastic will be too tight to put anything into and it will cause the outside of the roll to pucker too much with pencils inside. Hope that makes sense :)

great project as usual. I didn't get how you tie the ribbon in bow form , there was only one free end of the ribbon ,other one was sewn with the binding @10:16 but in the end when it was rolled it showed two free ends which were tied in a bow

I line one end up with the right side of the case, then sew the other end (which overhangs by several inches) 1.75" in from the left side. When you roll up the case, you'll see that you then have two free ends :)
