Hem fine and sheer fabrics by hand with this rolled hem tutorial.
Hand rolled hems give a couture finish to delicate fabrics such as silk and chiffon. In this example I am using cotton lawn.

Great tutorial and starting your sewing without a knot brought me back to sewing lessons at school in the fifties! We were never allowed to use a knot. We weren't taught a rolled hem though, but now I know. Thank you teacher.

Loved the method of it, totally disappointed that you have not shown how to turn the corners while working with a rolled edge. Please point me to it if you have uploaded a video about hem-stitching rolled edges of handkerchiefs or scarves. Thank you!

Could you please show how to finish corners when roll-hemming all four sides of a piece of cloth as one might with a scarf or hanky? I was a little disappointed that you didn't show us how to do that in this video.

Fantastic tutorial - by far the clearest demonstration I've seen on doing a rolled hem. I'm about to tackle hemming a silk chiffon dress I made using an original Vogue pattern from 1939. This has given me the confidence I needed to get started (after doing a small practice sample, of course!). Thank you!

Thank you very much for this lovely tutorial. I wanted to sew some fine cotton lawn handkerchiefs without using my machine - I’ve been sewing for many decades but did not know how to sew a hand rolled edge. This was enjoyable to do and I’ve just finished the first handkerchief - looks great and well worth the time. Many thanks!

I used to be in too much of a hurry to hand stitch, I was all about the finished project, use the machine, get it done. I feel the enjoyment of taking the time to be doing things myself now, taking the time to do a nicely rolled hem or fix a hole by hand. Thank you for this tutorial

Thank you for these hem tutorials. I have a very thin fabric that I’m making some of my kids clothing from. The pattern instructions say to run a line of stitching and then cut close to the stitch line and then fold it over and stitch again. Since my sewing machine tends to gather the very fine fabric instead of stitching it smoothly, no matter the needle or thread I use, I’m going to do a hand stitched line as instructed and then do this rolled hem by hand. It will probably take quite a bit longer, but I think I’ll get better results. Thank you for your clear demonstrations and explanations as I think this will make it easier to make that rolled hem.

I think that sounds like a good idea. Sometimes doing things by hand works out quicker if you end up having to constantly unpick things that have gone wrong by machine!

I have seven more to go, and it's slow while I am new at it but the directions were so clear that it was easy! Thank you so much! Hello here's a reply I sent to someone with the same question a little while ago. I hope the description makes sense: When I do mine I roll almost to the edge of one side, just a few mm from the edge. I snip a tiny bit off the point of the corner to reduce bulk and then finish that edge. There should be a diagonal angle to the hem as it meets the corner. Then I start rolling the next edge. Where the previous hem is it's a bit bulky so I tend to start that off with the narrowest double fold I can manage, rather than the single fold and ladder stitches. Then once I'm happy with that section I start rolling the rest of the hem. I hope that helps! 💚

Thank you for this video. I am trying to figure out how to prepare linen which will be a handkerchief so I can mount the bobbin lace I have made. I understand the process to go across a side from right to left. What I can't seem to find is a video on what to do once you get to the left edge and need to continue with a 90 degree angle to go all the way around. I imagine if not done right the corner could be a nasty mess, which I don't want after taking all the time to make this lace.

It would be more helpful if you can use a dark-color thread for demonstration purposes. It was difficult to see with white thread on white fabric.
@Bokreeder
@Bokreeder 3 года назад
Lovely video!! I was curious though, what's the difference between this stitch- a rolled hem, and a slip stich?
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 3 года назад
They are similar in the stitch pattern, the rolled hem refers to they manner of folding the fabric to make a hem rather than the stitch itself. To get the fabric to roll neatly I stab the needle through both layers of fabric so that the thread comes out on the outside of the hem. Then when you pull the thread tight it tucks the fold of the hem underneath itself to make the rolled edge without having to do as much fiddly folding. For a slip stitch I only go through the single layer of fabric on the hem fold because I've already folded the hem up twice, no need to get it to roll over on itself. I hope that makes sense! 💚
@Bokreeder
@Bokreeder 3 года назад

Yes! It does work with cotton fabrics, the sample in this video is in fact a very light weight cotton. It also works on linen too. If you're fabric is heavier and thicker than this it can still be done but the finished effect is a bit chunkier 💚

Very nice, but I am a big ole cheater! I baste the small fold over, then I actually sew the hem. Then I pull out my basting stitches when I'm finished. I may have figured this way out, because I started sewing Barbie clothes when I was 9 years old. 😉

What was the thing in your middle finger
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 3 года назад
It's called a thimble. They're designed to help push the needle through the fabric and protect your finger. If you go a lot of hand sewing you quickly get small dents on your fingertip which can be painful 😊
