Loved this tutorial! I just created one and it’s super cute!! So happy with how it turned out. I must have made my pattern wrong though, because my sides didn’t fit the main body. I just added some darts which ended up being super cute.

I made 3 sewing machine covers the past two days using this pattern for the 3 machines I have set up all the time. I like the pattern but I have a hint. I made one for my FeatherWeight and my Viking both of which are wider at the end versus where the needle is. So that area was a little wider than I liked. Just didn't fit as snug as I wanted. I got to thinking about "darts". I used to make clothes and we used darts to fit things. So on the front end of my machines that are narrower I just put a dart in. Works great and nice and neat.

Does using directional fabric mean the design will be upside down on the back side of the cover?
@katiedidi659
@katiedidi659 9 месяцев назад
Yes it will. An option would be to add 1/2 inch to that measurement and then cut it in half and then flip one side so it will be pointed in the right direction on both sides. The extra 1/2 inch is to account for the added seam allowance. You only have to add it to the fabric that needs to be cut for the largest pattern piece and only for the outside unless the inside is also directional.

Love the fabrics you chose, especially the dressmakers pattern one, I would have used pink binding to match the frocks though, as the yellow is brighter than the dresses? Brilliant cover and video :). Just read the comments and found most of us want the pattern fabric....

Have used fleece (not fusible fleece) for the cover (no pocket) Advantages of using fleece:: -no fusing required -no lining required -stretches a little for easing around curves and for fitting on machine -no raveling raw edges -no binding required -no ironing needed during construction -helps "dust" machine when slipped over machine -can be tossed in the washer/dryer and then used immediately without ironing it

I love these videos. I've been sewing for almost 60 years, and I still learn from Professor Pincushion. One thing that can NEVER be stressed enough (to new sewers as well as the more experienced ones) is NEVER (and I mean NEVER) use your fabric scissors to cut out paper patterns. Fiskars makes school scissors with either blunt or pointed tip (meant for elementary school children) that are ideal for cutting out paper patterns and are quite inexpensive (I paid about $2 for a pair in the craft section of Walmart).

Your comment made me smile. My Mom's sewing scissors were sacred, and we children dared not touch them. I treat my scissors the same,

Who woulda thunk it’d be so complicated to pin around those curves 🤣 clipping the rectangle kinda seemed to help. I guess I’ll find out how helpful it was once I sew it! I’m so excited for these covers for my serger and sewing machine! We have two labs and we live in the desert. Desert meaning no grass. No grass means lots and lots of loose dirt from them running around outside. They also shed like crazy! It doesn’t seem to matter how much we sweep! So, even though my machines are on a shelf above waist height I’m not convinced that dog hair and dirt won’t find their way into my machines! Thank you for this easy to follow tutorial. ❤️🐾
@sabrinaharris6538
@sabrinaharris6538 2 года назад
I just read tour comment about your labs, I know what you mean about the hair, I had a dog that was only part lab, and the amount of hair was insane, noe I have a border collie/ Siberian husky mix, and the hair is even worse, and it does get on/in the machine.

Thanks for the tutorial! What in the heck is bias tape? I guess I need to do some Googling but it's gotta be for clean/finished edges. Not sure of the purpose of the interfacing other than rigidity? I'm a sewing noob but I want to make my own shorts eventually, using fabric I choose myself. This seems like a good starter project too. I have done my own hidden hems for pants which is nice to be able to do myself. Fixed a couple buttons too. Thanks much!

Great tutorial! After completing I will say that you definitely don't need a full yard of fabric for each. If you're like me and are trolling the remnants section, I only used a little over a half yard of each fabric, so I had a lot left over (and my machine is bigger than that spiegel). I also think you can skip the step of pattern pieces since you're just cutting rectangles. Just make sure you cut the side panels first to be able to adjust the main panel as directed in the tutorial.

One other thing I didn't mention. You do not need to make a pattern. All you have to do is cut the two pieces of rectangles with the measurements you get from your machine and then on the smaller side pieces just round the corners on the end that you want to be up. Very simple to make and less work not cutting out a pattern.

I have to admit that I have enjoyed watching this tutorial multiple times because of the main fabric pattern. You are lucky your mom has great tastes! A sewing machine cover is one of the first projects I tackled when I bought my sewing machine last year. It didn't turn out great because I used scraps of fabric and kind of quilted it. And, I hadn't sewn in several decades. Now I'm thinking my sewing machine is looking very pitiful, so for its birthday, I'll make it a new cover. It is so great that yours is reversible. I love reversible things! The reverse side can have pockets on the ends of the cover. One thing I think I will do differently is put in zippered pockets. I made my pockets kind of deep, but found that even so, stuff was always falling out of the pockets when I removed the cover. Needless to say, I stopped using the cover a while ago because I was tired of trying to find a new spot for all the stuff that fell out of the pockets. I use a simple old towel for a cover in the interim. Another tip, use the really stiff interfacing, so that the cover will stand up straight on a flat surface. Then you can easily access all the goodies in the pockets whether the cover is on the machine or on the table. I also sewed a loop of fabric to make a handle at the top of the cover. Since I'm already making the cover different than last time, I may use some boning to make the cover stiffer, and the handle will also function to hold the boning in place at the top. While the pockets hold it in place at the bottom. Still in the "thinking" phase, so I'm only hoping this will work as I haven't begun a pattern for this project yet. Your videos always inspire me to revisit old projects and abandoned projects and make them MUCH better. P.S. I still want that Spiegel sewing machine.
