I was getting cross-eyed trying to read pattern instructions and found this video. Thank you so much! Made my first collar ever, so pleased I could have kittens. You're an excellent instructor!
This was my first time following a tutorial for anything. Have made many collars following pattern instructions ... never came out perfect. This one did!!! Love the in-depth instructions and easy-to-follow hands-on demonstrations. Thanks. Frances J
I am making a collared shirt for my husband and have been stuck for several weeks. I have learned so much from Professor Pin Cushion. She explains every detail in a way that even a beginner like me can understand. I was getting ready to give sewing up. Thank you for your this and all your GREAT TUTORIALS
Bless you for this video. I have been struggling through reading a pattern and couldn't visualize this. I have been working on making my projects look cleaner and better and this helped tremendously!
I haven’t sew a shirt collar for over 35 years and I needed to help my daughter to convert a crew neck tee to a v-neck with a pointy collar on a last minute notice. I am glad your tutorial came to the top on my search because it is exactly what I needed. So no time is wasted. Your tutorial is clear and easy to follow. I started with a collar pattern that I found online and adjusted it to suit my needs, then I followed your tutorial to sew it up. The collar came along nicely and looked perfect on the v-neck tee. Thanks so much! Great tutorial. You are a life saver!!
That was such an amazing tutorial! Thank you so much! I just took apart one of my husband's old button up shirts and I plan on using it as a pattern to make new ones, your tutorial is a huge help! :)
Many thanks. I have followed you step by step through this video and now have a good collar attachment with its collar band. I always find attaching collars confusing but this has been a great help.
I usually hate stitching but as a fashion designing student I have to stitch...your video tutorials are really so gud and after seeing it I feel stitching nt really boring.. Thanks professor... It would help me more if all the vedios are available in the offline mode
Loved this! I was making my first shirt today and was having problems following the pattern. This video made it much clearer. Going to fix the ends...I wasn't sure how they were supposed to fold. Thanks so much. Saved this video to my favourites....and subscribed!
These are the best sewing tutorials! One can always clearly see, to the point, good pace, easy to follow... my Ottobre pattern had directions in a language I don't read, so I only had the pattern pieces and no directions :P
Thank you so much for a perfect video on how to put together a collar. I am from El Paso, Texas and never took the time to learn from my mom who was a seamstresses, well I did learn a little. Any way, the pattern instructions were difficult for me to understand, but your video taught me right. Have a wonderful day. Will look forward more of your videos.
Love! Love! Love! your tutorials. Currently I'm quarantined with Covid and unable to attend any community classes. You've been a life saver. Now I can finish my project. Just one question, what kind of interfacing did you use? Medium? Thank you so much!
I've been racking my brain with these pattern instructions I'm working with. I've tried the collar twice as instructed and I'm so confused, but this makes so much sense! Thank you!
This is a great tutorial! Thank you so much. I do have a question about trimming the four layers of the seam allowance of the collar and collar band. Why don't you grade the layers? And if you do, would you suggest the two inner layers of the collar be cut shorter than the two layers from the collar band?
Kim Bankston yes, you can definitely grade. My fabric was kind of on the thin side but it doesn't hurt to do it. I would probably make the collar shorter than the band.
Hey, really love the tutorial! I got this really nice brand golf shirt but didn’t pay attention to the tag instructions, washed it on hot water cycle, the tag was nylon and melted all over the collar. Shirt is silver polyester and I wanted to change the color to the color only on the side that gets flipped (where the nylon spotting is) to red. Would you have any advice for me in that regard? Would I be able to sew a fabric on just the inside instead of changing the whole collar and what would I need to add to retain the shape of the collar? Would greatly appreciate any feedback!
Thanks so much for posting this video, I have been trying for over a week to make a collar and I keep coming up short on the collar band, my tutor did not show me all of this, thanks again!!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Did I say, "Thank you"? I am working on a free pattern called The Overture Set that I got with the Love of Sewing magazine. The pictures and instructions for the collar were confusing to me. Your video has helped me get the collar done. Thank you, again.
The video was very detailed and helpful. I made my first shirt today and parts of the collar I wasn’t as happy with, I definitely understood the mistakes after watching this video..thank you
Professor Pincushion thank you! Wish I could attach the end results. I was extremely proud of the job I did. Thanks again. Love your videos been subscribed for years..
GREAT TUTORIAL !! I am making a shirt for the first time and this was very helpful, actually more than helpful, it let me do it..thank you so very much..a fan Bill
If I'm using a contrasting fabric for the inside of the collar, does it matter what side I attach the fusible interfacing to? Ex: the collar will be purple on the inside and black on the outisde. Thank you!
The slip stitch of the collar band seems redundant, since you do an edge stitch around the perimeter of the collar band. Is there a reason for the slip stitch?
Looks great Professor Pincushion . I am making a MCCalls 6044 short sleeve shirt for my husband for his birthday and this really helped me so much.. Thank you. :D
wonderful tutorial! :) will try and use these steps to make a smaller collar for my doggy! do you think i can starch the material instead of using interfacing?
xianated Are you planning on washing it? because starch will come out in water and then you'll have a flimsy collar again. I would use interfacing and then you don't have to worry about it.
Thank you! This is very useful. I'm making a costume with someone who has a white shirt with a collar, and I can't find one. So I might as well make one :D
Thank you Professor Pincushion for simplifying this procedure. Now I can finish my Jackets with a standard collar instead of doing a mandarin collar. Again thank you and have a great day.
hello..nice n clear tut.. Is the treatment of collar band the same with bias band?...since there are patterns that just have a collar pattern n ask us to make a bias band
when they say bias band, I just imagine they mean that the band is cut on the bias of the fabric, usually to give the band a bit of a stretch. If it looks the same as my band, then I would say, you're going to sew it on in a similar method.
1. I LOVE your nails! 2. You make me miss my sewing machine (in japan right now) 3. I hope that one day I'm as good a seamstress as you. 4. Seasons' Greetings!
DesiLoop bySSK I use a husqvarna lily 530. I've had the machine for about 15 years so I don't think they make this model anymore but it's been a good brand.
Thank you SO much for this video! I've been struggling with collars. I've made my mistakes work forme, but I know they are wrong. I put off making some flannel collared blouses for work until I had this figured out. Thanks again for this video💛
You probably just need to trim more of the seam allowance in that area. Then on the right side, very carefully, use a straight pin to pull out the fabric as much as you can. You can also buy a little tool at the fabric store that looks like a flat, pointy stick to push out corners but I just use a straight pin.
hi professor P, I am struggling to sew on a collar to pyjama top, but I don't have a band piece to sew. Should I have this? And I have two lappels to turn over but struggling as to which way I should turn them. I don't understand the instruction/diagram.
Mary Sinclair no, I don't think most pajamas have the collar band. I think in this particular case, the collar just is sewn direction on the neckline. If you post an image of your diagram on our Ask a Question on professorpincushion.com, I'll take a look and see if we can figure it out together :)
so for the collar stand (and also for the collar), is the one with interfacing the front one or the back? My instructions don't mention which one's which. Thanks!
danutzafly the side with interfacing is on the inside when the collar is finished and propped up. does that make sense? Even if you flip it the other way, it's not going to ruin your garment :)
thank you very much for this video I learn a lot and understand how to properly sew a collar in a shirt, you make me fall in love with sewing a over again. thanks!!!!!
Hello I wanted to know if I could get any suggestions on transforming a jacket that I bought from the Good Will into a nice dress for my Woman's Day at Church. Could I send a pic of the jacket?
you know what professor, i have been sewing collars and i always do this way and i always mess it up. even if i handbaste it, the stitching on the right side is fine ( i topstitch) but then on the wrong side, the stitching is uneven. so i'm thinking it's because my front collar stand is not equal in width or height perfectly to the back side so when i top stitch, the stitching is all crappy on the inside, like i miss some fabric. how do i achieve a perfect collar with perfect stitching??? i check out my ready to wear shirts and they seam perfectly stitched??? how do you achieve a perfectly even and folded collar stand??? please answer. :) love you. :)
+JHONATTANFF I think you're being too hard on yourself and your stitching is probably not as noticeable as you think, especially if your bobbin thread matches the fabric. I know I'm my biggest critic and nitpick things that no one else probably notices. Honestly, I don't think it's your stitching as much as cutting out the fabric pieces. I'm sure collar pieces in factories are manufactured or punched out in a way that makes them uniform and close to perfection. When we hand cut out a fabric piece, it's probably less then perfect so when it comes to seams and top stitches it may be a little uneven, especially on the bobbin side of the stitching. To get a better fabric piece, transfer your pattern to a stiffer piece of paper like cardstock or manila paper. You can even glue your tissue paper on this new paper and then cut it out. That way, you can make sure the pattern is as flat as possible, then place it on your fabric and use a small rotary cutter to cut it out. Instead of folding your fabric to get two fabric pieces, cut out your pattern pieces on a single layer of fabric. The better your fabric pieces are to begin with, the more accurate you can get when sewing it all together. And don't be so tough on yourself :)
