How to Sew a T-Shirt Blanket // Project for Beginners

Turn all of those old t-shirts in your closet into a memory blanket with this DIY sewing tutorial! This video is designed to be step-by-step for beginners and I go through the pros and cons of doing this blanket method vs. a quilt with batting and interfacing. Stay tuned for next week’s video that will show you how to make a t-shirt quilt!

02:44 - Step 1: Wash and Dry
03:01 - Step 2: Figure out size
03:48 - Step 3: Fill in the gaps
05:05 - Step 4: Cut the fronts off
06:24 - Step 5: Iron to get wrinkles out
07:10 - Step 6: Rough cut (you can skip to step 8 if you’re not using interfacing!)
Step 7: Apply Interfacing (OPTIONAL)
10:55 - Step 8: Square up
12:11 - Step 9: Lay out design
12:16 - Step 10: Pin & sew pairs together
14:13 - Step 11: Pin & sew rows together
19:25 - Step 12: Cut fleece backing to size
20:04 - Step 13: Pin & sew back
21:15 - Step 14: Clip the corners
21:31 - Step 15: Turn right side out, close opening

I lost my dad, very unexpectedly, back in June 2023. I have about 30 of his Tshirts (Guy Harvey and Miami Dolphins because he was the number one Dolfan) that I have decided to make into throw pillows for all the kids and grandkids -because of finding your video and how fun and easy you make it look. Love that you have a no interfacing option. I’m repurposing old school shirts and don’t want to spend the time and money on interfacing. And I started one with a quilt as you go system and finding them stretching so much when I stitch the last bits I knew I need to learn a new way

I really enjoyed watching… My only experience is having sewn patches on my motorcycle vest. My goal is to make a Harley Davidson T-shirt blanket/quilt for my grand daughter, who will be born in Jan 22. I’ve watched several other RU-vid channels, but after watching your videos, I think if I get a drink and take my time, I can do it! 🥃🤗

Have you made on using most of the T-shirts with out making them smaller squares. I want to make a big quilt with large pieces

I have not! But as long as your pieces are all cut to the same size, you should be able to follow the same steps!

Can you use sweatshirts in the tshirt blanket???

Absolutely!! I have about 50 hoodies in my closet, many of which are waiting to be turned into a blanket... I'll make another video with just sweatshirts! It might be difficult to mix t-shirts and sweatshirts because of the fabric differences, but you can definitely do it!
