00:00 Introduction
00:58 First way to sew piping
11:22 Second way to sew piping
20:08 Third way to sew piping
25:17 Fourth way to sew piping
Piping is a trim that reinforces the edges of a seat cover or other upholstery items. Besides, it is a kind of decorative trim for our upholstery projects.
It was mostly used in old cars, but it persists up to the present as part of a car upholstery interior decoration. It was in fashion in the sixties and seventies and still in the eighties.
I show in this video 4 ways of attaching piping. Which one is the best?
The 2 first ways were usually used by car upholsterers years ago. Perhaps, in the present days too, albeit the double stitching (french seams) has come to replace it.
The first way, as we can see, consists in preparing beforehand a vinyl piping strip that would be then sewn down to the lateral panel. This lateral panel is next attached to the main panel.
Generally, as a rule, the piping should be sewn down on lateral panels, as these pieces are narrower and more straight hence easier to handle them over the bigger main panel.
The second way shows how the piping strip of vinyl including its piping cord is sewn down directly to the lateral panel. Next. it will be attached to the main panel. following as a guide the line of stitches left on the reverse side of lateral panel vinyl. Car upholsterers in the past used this method a lot.
As shown in the video one of the keys to prepare the piping strip is make long stitches to avoid closer holes that could weaken the material. The tensions should be slightly loosened too. If tensions are too tight the material could shrink and form puffy areas.
The third way is faster than the former ones. As we can see, the cover is sewn down at one go. This method is generally used on plain car seat covers (foamed or non- foamed). It is also used in furniture to make cushions or chair's covers.
This method was used in the factories to manufacture bus seat covers. The mass production process needs faster ways to achieve tasks. Besides, the worker earned more money because the more seat covers the more money they received.
The last fourth way shows a kind of oversewing with a cording pipe enclosed. It is a fast way of piping generally for simple covers in cars or furniture.
In conclusion, if we would have to perform complex covers, the best would be to prepare the welting/piping to correctly attach it to a lateral panel then sew it down to a main panel. It would take more time but it would be much better to handle and our sewing would be more precise because we have a pre-done line of stitches that are useful as guides for our final closing sewing.
I have used a piping preser foot for the demonstration. I would recommend to get several of them for different plastic pipe/cord thicknesses.
I hope you enjoy the video and find this information is useful!
Cesar

Really like the fourth method. I assume you have to determine the extra vinyl needed to "roll" the material over the piping so you can keep the original dimension of the side panel.

Great video as always. With the first and second methods, you run a longer stitch (6mm?) and lower tension on the first 2 layers. And then a higher tension on the final layer and short stitch length (3mm?). Why is this?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Год назад
Long stitches to avoid the weakening of the vinyl with closer holes. It is practically a basting stitch. Soft tensions to avoid the shrinking of vinyl on its edge. Short stitches and tighter tensions to get a tight sewing junction. It is explained in the video description.

Ebay también vende. Lo recorte un poco y lo hice mas corto en el largo, para poder dar vueltas cerradas mucho mejor. Hay de varias medidas. Hola! In the first example you sew the piping to the panel and when you show your work you can see the stitches on the piping. Then when you sew the 2nd panel on, suddenly you can’t see the stitches anymore? How do you get it tighter against the piping so you don’t see the stitches? After the second panel you show your work again and it looks like there are 2 sets of stitches. One closer and one not as close. How did you get the second one tighter against the piping?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Год назад
Interesting remark! I'd be glad to answer. It happens that the hollow shape(big and small foot that form it) where the piping strip is housed is slightly wider than the piping cord. It means that at our first sewing it is almost impossible to be tight including the second sewing attaching it to lateral panel edge. I could say this foot would get a tighter closing sewing at the end because the real measure is for the bulky part formed at the end by the 2 layers of vinyl(top and bottom) plus two layers of folded over strip including the plastic piping cord. In other words the piping foot hollow shape should be for the final sewing when attaches those layers of vinyl together. The final closing sewing is done approx 2 mm from the other line of stitches(our guide) on the seam. I hope this information helps.

What foot size in inches would you choose for a 2.5mm cord? A thousand thanks
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 11 месяцев назад
It should be included the 2.5 mm piping plus the folded vinyl thickness that would be 2 mm more. Consequently, the ideal foot groove should be of a 4.5 mm wide. www.amazon.com/4-8Mm-Left-Piping-Cording-Pfaff/dp/B07Z7Q4P4N You could purchase on internet pipiping feet of different sizes.

@@Cechaflo thanks, but when you join 6 all at the end besides the border there aren't 4 layers, 2 of the vinyl of the border and 2 of the vinyl above the piece to be sewn?

Добрый день! Вопрос: зачем менять натяжение нити? Что это даёт?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Год назад
To sew (baste) the piping strip to a lateral panel the tensions should be soft a little Why? because if they are too tight the vinyl shrinks on its edge. These first sewings are kind of basting with long stitches. On the contrary tensions should be tight for the final sewing to get a tight junction. Stitches should be shorter.
