Dear Professor Pincushion, This was an excellent tutorial on how to sew with knit fabrics. I had given up hope on sewing dresses, because my seams would pop open and I had a very difficult time sewing this problematic fabric. But your tips and tricks have encouraged me to go back to sewing and try and finish my dresses that I had started a few years ago. Thank you

I've never worked with knits before. I bought a very stretchy jersey. There are skinny stripes running up and down the fabric. When I saw the fabric on the bolt, the stripes were running vertically and I liked the way it looked. But I am confused on the way I should cut it because the lady at the store asked me how I plan to wear it. With the stripes horizontally or vertically? I did not know what she meant because the jersey is so stretchy I thought I could wear it in either direction. But now, for three days I have been trying to lay out my maxi dress pattern on grain. The grain does not line up with the selvage. I have never experienced this problem before. Nobody should take over one and half hours to line up a pattern. Ugh! I wanted to make a nice dress for summer but didn't realize it would cause me so much grief!

Wow thanks for this great tutorial. Love the speed. I usually hate sewing tutorials and only last about 2 minutes in because they’re so excruciatingly slow to get to the point and hem and haw around about every little detail. This one is awesome.

@Muhsinah.Nadeem Год назад
✍🏾 Jersey tends to roll towards the wrong side of fabric. Lay fabric out in single layer. Grain always needs to be parallel to the selvage Use only ballpoint pins to pin Use spray starch Iron : synthetic/knit setting. No steam. Pat/press. No pushing. Make sure its washable. Wash afterwards to get out the starch. Use knit interfacing. Jersey Stretch twin needle or ballpoint needle All purpose thread Walking foot Stretch or zigzag stitch Width .5 Length 2.5 Knit doesn’t fray

Wow that was a lot of really good information packed into one video! I basically use jersey knit for all my sewing since I mostly do creative t-shirt transformations, and this has changed SO much for me. Before, I would kinda just hope the fabric would roll the way I wanted it to, but now I'll be constantly thinking about which is the right and wrong side, and use starch if I need to :) Thanks so much!
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 9 лет назад
check the curling on the selvages only. On the cut edge of the fabric, I don't think this rule necessarily applies. Jersey can be a tricky cat :)
@ScrappyTreasures
@ScrappyTreasures 9 лет назад
oh hmm...so the curling is mostly just for the pre-cut fabric edges?
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 9 лет назад
Cherish Red curling on the selvages is just use to determine right and wrong side of fabric. so even if your fabric is cut, you can still look at the selvages.

Lots of useful information, here, thanks. I have a couple of questions - how do you use grainlines when the jersey fabric doesn't have a selvedge edge? And do twin needles come with ball points? Thanks in advance.
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 7 лет назад
It's not really the "grainline" that you have to worry about. You just want to make sure the the direction of the fabric with the greatest amount of stretch is going around your body instead of going up and down the body. If you follow that rule when placing your pieces down then you should be fine. Schmetz does have a stretch twin needle so I would use that one :)

I've never worked with Jersey knit before and recently purchased a medium weight polyester blend type of material that is very stretchy and curls at the ends also some fraying, I made a pair of Palazzo pants and was wonder why one leg was a little shorter that the other, now I realized that the fabric was dangling of the table causing it to stretch. Hi Professor. This video was extremely helpful. I’ve never sewed with jersey knot before and making a skirt for my mother-in-law. The knit I am using is extremely stretchy and heavy. I was wondering if you would suggest that I add a stretchy fusible interfacing in the waistband to give it a bit more structure. It is an elasticized band and it does need to stretch. My mom has a heath issue and the waistband needs an inch or two of stretchability. The fabric feels like over time it may stretch a lot and become a much bigger size. I was thinking the interfacing may allow a stretch but retain the shape? What do you think?

when was the last time you had your machine cleaned and maintenance? Sometimes if there's a lot of dust inside the machine it can cause stitching issues. You should also have your machine taken into a professional for a yearly maintenance, so if it's been awhile, you might try that.

hmmmm.....so the bobbin thread and top thread are not looping together and just coming apart? It could be the thread tension needs to be tighter. Also, if you haven't had your machine taken in for cleaning in awhile, you should consider that. Sometimes that messes up the tension.
