This video has taught me to never ever bother with sequinned material. A huge thank you to Dr. Pincushion! 🙂

+Valerie Mercer it's always a good idea to know what you're in for especially since this fabric can be pricey. If you like the look, maybe start small like creating sequin appliques to put on a garment or just making a small portion of the garment with sequins. :)

For mesh backed sequin fabric, an underlining may be advisable. You came close to talking about that when you mentioned organza interfacing, but underlining is a slightly different concept. Basically you sew the underlining to the fashion fabric and treat both layers as one piece of fabric.
@apwhoa7767
@apwhoa7767 8 лет назад
Okay, I think I get it...stitch an under lining to the original fabric or fabric pieces and then they can be my seam allowance? Or? Please clarify... thanks so much!
@wyrdness1
@wyrdness1 8 лет назад
Interfacing adds controled structure to speciffic areas of a garment. It usually removed from darts and seam allowences. An underlining however adds more all-over structure, and is treated as one fabric with the fashion fabric. In the case of sequin fabric with a mesh backing, a thin satin is the common choice for underlining, while silk organza would be the common choice for interfacing. It's in how you treat the inner construction.

Home sewing is great. it is our foundation of sewing but some things need a industry approach such as sequin. when you have the time/ if you want to do all of the steps in the video then by all means do but if you don't have the time/don't want to, just sew straight through the sequin and you will still have a beautiful result. look at the sequin garments at the stores and you will see that they have sewn through the sequin and the garment is still great.
@alygarden9875
@alygarden9875 3 года назад
That's very true. However, my non industrial machine, is probably not comparable to the ones in factories...not all are created equal... I'm sure we need to know which one is at the level high enough to handle that type of fabric and sequin...
@erict7093
@erict7093 3 года назад
@@alygarden9875: It's not the machine, its the needle. All sewing machines can go through sequin. What I mean by industrial approach is sewing time. In the industry they don't have time to remove the sequin from the seam allowance. Now if you're a couture house then by all means you have time to remove sequin.

I do prom and bridal alterations. With this kind of fabric I normally just sew the fabric together without removing any sequins. If the sequins stay popped up I trim them after the seam is sewn. On beaded fabric the same I sew it without removing any beads I add beads to hide where I've been if a gap happens because of large beads. I leave all the excess because most of these girls re-sell their prom gowns. If I end up doing the same gown for someone else and it needs let out I know the excess is still in their to let out. :)

We bought dance outfits where they had just cut the fabric through the sequins and didn't remove them from the seam allowance. The girls were bleeding after the first performance because the cut edges were so sharp they cut through the serged edges and then into their skin...all around their legs and under their arms. Needless to say they had to be taken apart and resewn properly. This technique might work for you but I wouldn't recommend it for everything.

Excellent effort in attempting to educate people. But I'm afraid this has served to scare people away from working with this gorgeous fabric. The type of fabric with which you have demonstrated can be sewn just as you would do any other fabric, just use a new needle. No need to remove all those sequins. Just line the garment. Just remember, home sewers, stick to a simple pattern, this particular type of sequin fabric, use a new needle and you can have a beautiful piece of fashion wear you will be proud of. Do not be afraid. I promise you.

I admit, I was like HECK no. Too much work, time consuming.... NOT worth it😟. But that would be AWESOME if it could be sewn by machine after all👏👏. You said just use a new needle ... Any needle? or is there a particular one that is required? I'm a newbie and have much to learn ..I use the same needle for the different fabrics I use,...satin ,organza and Chiffons, polyester, and taffeta. I attempted to switch out needle on one ocassions, to use proper ones that were recommended to me by Joannes and all it did was damage my organza.... I went back to using the same one I use for all these fabrics and do much better(leather needle btw...at least that's what I was told the needle was. It's the one that came already installed with my machine) ☺️🤷🏻‍♀️

Thank you so much! My fabric is not FULL sequins like your demo, but I still plan on using your techniques. Also, I plan on using my seam ripper and paper scissors to clip off the sequins near the seam, and also finish with a french seam. I going to test this on scrap fabric. I let you know how it comes out.

I had bought the exact same mesh fabric sequin cloth and the easiest way for me was to simply sew the fabric to a store bought slip of the same colour as sequin cloth. That way I did not need to attach any lining and my dress was ready in half an hour. Of course, I hand sewed everything and used the mesh margin and not the sequin area for attaching it to the slip. The strap of the slip became my dress strap and it looks very stylish.

I made a skirt with glass bugle beading, so I had to break them using a small pair of plyers. The glass flies everywhere but then you have lovely clean seams which can then be sewn. I kept all the spare beads to sew back on. Looks amazing and I didn’t break even one needle in my machine that way.

did we need to use lining? what if it does not maintain the shape of body
@ProfessorPincushion

I recommend a lining for comfort since the fabric on the inside is not entirely soft against the skin. Also, it can be somewhat see-thru. With a lightweight lining, it shouldn't affect the drape of the garment that much.

Fold it up the amount that you need to hem it, (if you need to cut off some excess then you can do that but you may have to cut off some sequins to make it easier to cut the fabric since you should use cheap scissors to cut through sequins.) Then hand sew the hem into place using a blind hem technique

@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 7 лет назад
hmmm...I haven't tried to add applique to this type of fabric. I would practice on a scrap with a small sample applique first. If it was me, I would remove all the sequins in the area the applique would be and then hand sew the applique on. After, if there's any weird bald spots, hand sew individual sequins to cover them.

I have brought a sequin dress, unfortunately the straps are too long, I would like to take them up 1 inch , how do I do this and is it easy to do
@ProfessorPincushion
@ProfessorPincushion 8 лет назад
well, the easiest way to do this is to fold the extra length of strap and tuck it into the inside of the dress on the backside so you can't see it. Then I would just hand sew this into place. You'll be able to see it on the inside of the dress but it's much more simple then trying to remove seams and sew it back into place without doing any damage.

If you remove the sequins from the seamline, you can use whatever needle is appropriate for the type and weight of the fabric underneath, like a microtex 70/10. If you're just plowing right through them, then you'll probably want a leather needle but it could be risky depending on your machine.

yes, it's a very similar process, except instead of cutting out the sequins, you'll be breaking beads (that fall within the seam allowance area) with a hammer. You can apply painters tape to the seam allowance areas, hammer it, and then peel the tape off and most of the broken bead pieces should be on the tape, so it'll be cleaner.

Why you readin my name? Just try it and you will never get better if you keep saying you’re horrible at it you’re not you’re just learning and you’re going to make mistakes but that’s part of the learning process don’t put yourself down about it

All that individual cutting is not nessesarry . just get a peice of sequins fabric cut it in half in any direction and see where it takes you has to be with a peice of fabric thats junk

+YoshiLover122 it is, but you have to know what you're getting into with this fabric...which is a good since it is so expensive you don't want to waste it. But the good news is that it isn't hard, just very time consuming.

+Jen Stosser you can't depend on me for correct pronunciations. :( I have a speech issue where I can't even tell if I say words correctly or not. I just do the best I can. :)

I think those garments you're talking about were sewn with an industrial machine, which can handle seeing through the sequins, this tut is for domestic machines I believe

+Nico Reuel: the sequins fabric that is in the video along with lots of the sequin fabric that is in the fabric stores a home sewing machine can sew right through those. now the fabric that is bulky with sequins that has added things with the sequence then that cannot be sewn straight through but flat sequences such as being featured in the video your home machine can handle it
