I really respect you for just coming out and saying yeah, I got no money, so here's how I saved my plants. I am in the same boat, and now I know there's something I can do to help in the heat of our central Arkansas summers! Thank you so much. I hope you're still gardening, I know this video is almost seven years old. But just know, it helped me here in 2020. And your note at the end to smile for a stranger tugged my heart strings. Thank you for being a decent human being, there are so few of them left in the world nowadays. Subscribed!
Hello, just wanted to say thank you for this amazing video. I was feeling so defeated because I'm trying to garden with no budget and often times you see the nice to haves on social media and it makes you feel like your garden is not okay because you don't have the nice looking mulch, or shade cloths or whatever. came here looking for ideas for shade cloths because my plants are dying in my subtropic climate and I love that your video is sooo relatable and gave me the motivation to go out in the garden and try again with whatever I have. 9 years later and this is still relevant. :) thanks
One of my favorite things to use in the garden are the big black binder clips used in offices. I have found them cheap my the bags full in thrift stores. I made a shade cloth from one of those cheap black doorway screens that attach to the doorway with hook and loop tape and it parts when you walk through. Using with the clips and some garden stakes it makes a great shade screen and lets rainwater in. Gardening does not have to be expensive if you think outside the box! Thanks for sharing and showing people they don’t have to buy expensive equipment! Another good shade screen is replacement pergola netting. Hu may even buy it on clearance at the end of the season or pull some fro the curbside that has been thrown out!!! 😉
Hey Wayne, I just wanted to say "thanks a bunch!" for this video! My husband was out of work for 6 months, and we're growing our food so we can focus the new income on catching up. Thanks to this video and the comments, I am going to use an old white sheet we have to shade my Brassicas and lettuce. Seriously so helpful!! God bless!
I also have weed blocking fabric laying around and was wondering if it would work as shade cloth. I also don't have a lot of money laying around. I also love the old sheet idea mentioned by other commenters. Thanks for this video.
A couple of other shade options: If you have a patio umbrella or camping type canopy. Or you could use a paint tarp or even an old sheet. If you plan your garden with tall sun loving plants on the south side of the garden they will shade the other plants ie corn tomatoes etc. You could also use containers for growing and move them to the best areas.
thank you for this great video. Im in oklahoma and the days have been 100+ . I was wanting to shade my tomatoes, but cant afford expensive shade cloth. I appreciate your ideas so much. Ive gone to walmart and found some landscape fabric and put it up. Thanks again for the help and for the idea!
I just wanted to say thank you for this! I am stationary living in an RV for the first time, in a new state that I have no clue how to navigate it's dry hot summers. And I and struggling to have, keep and save a small garden. So you hit me right where I am! Thank you! 😊 your video today is still relevant❤️
I had no clue being a new green house gardener. I went to our homedepot and was looking for shade fabric in which they did not carry. So I spent about $10 on weedblock fabric. Being that I also sew the fabric was very easy to stitch together to fit the one side of the green house that was cooking my plants from the heat. I to have been just using what is around the house to put seedlings in and transferring into whatever works! a drill really comes in handy to make planters out of almost anything. Thank You! I will start following your ideas!
I googled the question "can I use weed prevention screen as a shade cover." I have some of this and didn't want to take the time to get in the car and go get it. The time factor and money of course are considered. What came up was how much a person can spend on shade screen. I got no answer. Thank you FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION! Also I noticed you had brocoli. I grew it and used the leaves in my salad. You got the taste of brocoli in your salad. IT WAS GREAT.
Hi Maria, thank you for watching, commenting, and providing this great feedback! I LOVE broccoli in my salads too! :) I really appreciate you letting me know what search term you used to pull up the video, that really does help on my end. Let me know of there's anything else I can help you with.
Nice looking garden Wayne also you have a real good idea using that plastic ,not all of us have money, so true and we have to make do with what we have.Very helpful video.Thank you for sharing..Much luck and Successful.
Great video. :) I was looking online to find a shade fabric to buy and I came across your video. I like your style! My cucumber plants have been wilting in the heat wave we’re having and I wasn’t sure how to help them. As a temporary solution, I took an old sheet and used clips and zipties to attach the sheet to my balcony to cover the plants. After seeing your video, I think my ‘temporary solution’ is here to stay. I’m all about saving money where I can! Thanks!
I have been using old trampoline tarps and net sides as shade cloth .. Jumping part is like 60%shade and side nets are like 10% shade and they readily avilable free.
Good vid. Good for you for using what you had laying around! Insted of spending money, I'm using an old bed sheet and it works like a charm. Whatever works. God Bless and keep doing what your doing!
EDCandCOMMSJunky There you go (a white bed sheet was along the lines of what I was thinking)! White will reflect and not retain the heat like black and dark colors do -- as an added bonus.
I love the idea! Sometimes you just have to make do! Why spend money when you dont have to! And you cant spend money you dont have! I think people forget...not everyone has money to throw around!
This is so nice. Just what I was looking for! I live in the UAE and we are forced to kill our plants in the harsh desert heat. We don't have the lumber but I'm trying to wonder what to do with the surplus palm tree leaves branches we have. They are not sturdy enough to hold a cloth though
Hey man! Looking great. I'm a Peace Corps Volunteer serving in West Africa as an Agriculture volunteer. Our Hot season is coming up! I'm looking at developing a shade structure, and cost is a huge factor with the people I work with. I'm thinking about doing a shade structure with old mosquito nets -- any thoughts? A lot of shade structures I've seen use fancy materials which aren't even close to available here. But I'm thinking that the mosquito net would give enough dappled shade. Thanks for any insights!
i used a white pillow case today! i did not harden my peppers very well and some of them are sun-burned, one is really bad, i really hope I can save it..
I'm staying in apartments and my poor potted plants are getting torched ...bad thing is I stay in brick apartments and don't feel I can use much options.... SOMEBODY HELP PLEASE!!!!!! I don't want my plants to die off
This is a weed fabric that I had laying around...not meant to be used as shade cloth. However, as you can see...it does work! :) The percentage of shade cloth will vary depending on your region and the plants you're shading. Is there something particular that you're looking to do chris fan?
