Thanks again Trev. What I have learned from you is a light tap with the hammer is more effective than a heavy hit to achieve your end goal. From a heavy hit, the metal seams to bounce rather than move. I'm off out to my workshop to attempt today's lesson. Great stuff & inspirational as usual.

As is so often the case. kinda zen advice when you think about it...
@toml.8210

I started by hammering aluminium cans together, then forming the into ash trays.
@fishhuntadventure

Well actually a heavy whack is quite dramatically effective in shaping metal… the thing is that it moves other places that aren’t beneficial- and correcting these stretches, wrinkles, and shapes is more time consuming than simply stretching it where you want it more generally to begin with.

Nice work, Trev. You're a good teacher; now I know why body work is so expensive as it is quite an art; while still a profession and very time consuming. Personally, I've been a mechanic for about fifty years and have quite a bit of welding experience which includes socket welding high pressure hydraulic piping. Stick and MIG are my experience as TIG wasn't really into use widely at that time, (1970s and 80s). Massaging sheet metal for body panels hasn't been my forte, though. This is why I feel fortunate to have found your channel. Not all of us have access to the major tools of the trade such as English wheels an such, so it's quite refreshing to see how panels can be formed using what can be easily and economically procured. I thank you for taking the time to share your expertise.

Hey Trev, you're doing a wonderful job educating me on a subject I always found interesting but had next but had next to no knowledge of. I grew up as an auto mechanic with no teaching on body panel repair or building. Really enjoy how you make it "make sense ". Thanks

There aren't ANY schools for this skill anywhere. The skill is passed from generation to generation, and the younger people will just take the shortcut and use force, machines, or welding to do what you see Trev do in the video. Notice how slowly Trev works the small piece!

thanks Trev , another excellent tutorial showing the process in detail from start to finish. Its better than following a course at college or in a workshop as we are getting one to one in the front seat. Thank you for going to the trouble of explaining your tool choice and the various methods of using them so that we can see your thought process throughout the job. In a few short hours with your video tutorials I have learnt far more than I have picked up over a 50 year period of repairing and restoring my own classic cars. .. its like getting a completely free car bodywork repair workshop brought to your own home .....Priceless

Hello, learned a lot from your videos!! My bodywork teacher back in the day explained the waffle hammer as follows: when you hit a stomp nail again and again at random places on a flat sheet, the metal will compress at those points and the flat sheet will shrink inwards into a bowl. I then tried flaring out my fenders with the waffle hammer his way, but it didn't work for me, by just hiting it and by luck doing it half your way there was more succes. Maybe I can start on the other side now, after 20 years :) Cheers

I see guys hammering ashtrays, and propeller nose cones for aircraft at airshows. They use a leather bag filled with steel shot to for the ash tray bowl, but I don't stay long enough to see a propeller cone made. They are actually selling soldering rods for aluminium, but hammer out parts to attract the crowds.

Hello, Trevor the Loquacious! I suggest you set up a Patreon account. I support a number of content providers on a monthly basis and would be glad to support you if only it was to see which shirt you wear each week. I'm just an old guy now, living in a apartment, but I do still enjoy learning about shaping metal. OK, listen. Whoever told you to save up all the van updates until the end is full of crap. I guarantee your subscribers and supporters numbers would jump up if you were giving weekly updates on the van. Projects, and well done projects in particular, are very popular on RU-vid.
