It really depends on your wireless router. I was able to turn on UPNP (Universal Plug and Play), which automatically takes care of setting up port forwarding rules so I don't have to. That saved me from having to set up a port forward in my current setup. I had to set up a port forward for Plex a long time ago because my hardware didn't support UPNP. I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but it varies depending on the capabilities of the hardware you're using. I hope this (somewhat) helps.
