I've been a special cutting tool makers for many years now and his technique is ok but there is a few reservations. There is a left side and a right side to the chain. You wanna start with the proper size file for your chain. Smaller saws use smaller files. Never allow your chain to get as dull as the one depicted. Slow steady strokes and no waver in the angle...up, down or sideways. Also, you'll be able to see a nice clean, straight tooth edge on top. The burr or hairline along the cutting edge is what you should see when the tooth is sharp. You want all the teeth to be the same length, ideally. You won't necessarily file or grind each tooth the same amount since some teeth have more wear than others. There may be one or two teeth .010" or .015" shorter than the rest, but that should be fine. They will wear evenly eventually...or maybe not take as much on the shorter teeth during future sharpenings. Cheers from a long time wood chuck.

I gotta say this! Thanks for the straight forward video. This is pretty much how I did it in the dealer shop for on-the-saw sharpening. Costs less and effective. Maybe there should be a rule that some guys have to at least have posted one "How-To" video of his own before he can do thumbs down and say how a posted video is all wrong! I've seen guys who cut trees all day throw some strokes on a chain saw sitting on the tailgate and get back to making money, throwing streams of shredded wood! Pretty much the way you did it here! Practice makes better too. Thanks Again!

Helpful, thanks New American Friend. New to chainsaws, just have an electric model with an Oregon chain set for light garden jobs. Though my sharpening set came with an angle guide I found that the file naturally adopted the correct angle and I could see/feel the increased sharpness after filing. If you know your way around tools: sharpening chisels etc, then it's fairly instinctive. Just tried some light cutting: all I really need, about 3 inch timber and it's like new again. People will always naysay and contradict, don't pay any heed. Your method works! Thanks for taking the time to make and post the video.

It helps if you tighten the chain prior to sharpening, don't get your file at home depot go to a place that sells Stihl or Husquavarna they'll have a much better file some lawn mower shops sell them. Make sure your file is level with the tooth not pointing up or down. The top of the tooth does the cutting not the point. hold the file with the handle and on the front of the file nice and easy keeping the file as steady as possible push forward only not back do it as many times as need til sharp.

A guy below commented the following n here is my 2 cents on his 2 cents. You said " there is no way you went out and cut anything after that." Well that's almost the same way I sharpen my Stihl saw. I try n sharpen each time I fill up the bar oil tank. (I use this as a memory aid since I am almost 67 now n often cant remember what I ate for breakfast).... My Difference: a. I do use a flat Stihl angle guid on my rat tail file and b. I take 5 swipes on each of my teeth, this guy takes 4. AND after sharpening it is easily noticeable how much better my saw cuts with out question. ALSO when you get the chain sharpened professionally, not only is it pricy & I need to drop it off n pick it up, the pro grinds so much steel off each tooth vs me sharpening it by hand - my chain last easy 200-300% longer when I sharpen it by hand......

There's no set rule for the number of swipes you need.. if I want to just put the edge back on mine then one or two swipes is enough. If I've hit a nail in the wood then it may need 10 swipes on every tooth. Part of the skill of chain sharpening is taking note of what it needs, and always start with the shortest tooth on the chain.

This works great for a while but eventually you have to knock down that portion of the chain that doesn't cut the wood but just clears the chip. If you don't it ends up being higher then the cutting portion of the chain and your saw won't work properly. I like your videos. Thanks.

Good point. I saw a different video that mentioned that as well. There's a tool available that allows you to file according to the recommended height (or depth) of your chain. Otherwise, this guy's video is the cats ass.

I am afraid four strokes won't clean up all the worn area on the front of those cutters. Plus, your file is pretty dull. Use a file guide, level and top angle at 35 degrees. When that is accomplished, don't forget to lower your depth guages.
@getdusty1

A word to the wise ... I'm not all that great about sharpening a chain saw, but I have sharpened them many times. I use safety gloves for one reason, and one reason only. That file has slipped on me before and the tooth I was filing has torn the thumb on the "driving" hand all to shreds!! It might be pretty dull to cut wood, but it's still pretty sharp to cut flesh!! BE CAREFUL!!!!!

Just looking for a quicker way but this guy is your typical city slicker. A couple good tips for a well sharpened saw is the final strokes look for a thin metal sliver at the outer edge of the tooth . It will be small and you can bend it and it will break off when you have reached this point you can't get it no sharper and also lightly file the drags

ive been runnin saws for the better part of my life for both personal use and as a tool in my many different jobs ranging from logging to construction.i currently run a husky 2100 with a 24 in bar .those of you who have a clue of what im talking about know that this saw is all about "chain speed" now,the video,my saw and that chain in the video,would cut any thing.however on that 41 u might want to consider sharpening what needs to be sharpened which is the top flat edge of the tooth,which was totally missed in this video.the top flat edge is the acctual cutting surface of the tooth,it must have a straight clean edge after sharpening. angle and all that number of strokes bullshit is for the more advanced sawyer who is cutting logs for the mill which need to be cut at perfect right angles to attain max board footage,but if you are just cutting fuelwood or brush....top flat edge will suffice

@bradbuckner9496
@bradbuckner9496 10 лет назад
Good day people. Garret, if you sharpen ONLY the TOP flat edge,,, how is the up right edge going to get through the wood? The saw cuts, only because it is sharpened properly. It is true, if you use enough pressure, speed,, oil, gas, and wear on the chain,, you can gnaw off a piece of wood. The number of strokes per side has NOTHING to do with how straight a saw cuts. THAT, all depends on how (close) to perfect the sharpen on every tooth is. You can have a damaged tooth that you filed way back to fix, and if you get it really sharp the saw will cut straight and fast. I NEVER touch the rakers, they are what makes the saw cut, the depth correctly. They will wear down as the chain rubs along the wood. If your chain is pulling out 4' to 6" ribbons of wood when you cut. LEAVE it alone. on green wood that is. Dry hard wood is completely different. One, two or maybe 3" inch shavings. And is harder on the chain. Every tank of gas even if you don't HIT something give it about 2 good licks on each side with a file that will, bite your fingernail. Saw will cut like new. I NEVER used new chain, bar oil. Only used motor oil out of my pickup. If you are cutting a log which is actually a bit to big for the saw, don't expect it to cut like a saw twice it's size. Be patient and use a sharp chain. If you never run a saw about 13 hrs a day 6 or 7 days a week for months or years straight,,,,,,, you are probably just guessing. In 3 years I cut 17,000 posts, 100 cords of fire wood and 200 house logs, 500 coral poles. And the fire wood was bucked up into 16" pieces. A cord of wood is, 4'x4'x8'. I also loaded hauled and unloaded all of it, except the house logs. The rest of it was loaded and unloaded by hand. A lot of the fence posts were 10' long and 8 to 10" in diamiter. That green post would weigh, 250lbs. So if you ever want to see what WORK is, try it. take care. Chain saws mean, WORK. But I loved it and I didn't have an ounce of fat on me. By the way, I was 30 then. Wanna meet me. Check out sharpensbest.com May God bless you and yours, Brad

Tighten your chain first so it doesn't flop around when you file it. What about the rakers? When you remove metal from the angled teeth the rakers which act as a depth guide are then too high. The saw will only cut on the tip of the bar.

The general procedure shown is good, but in no way shape or form are the teeth being sharpened with the file. The teeth are very dull and in bad shape, and will require many more filings with the file held straight (two hands gripping both ends firmly) and not making a curved stroke. Shows how to file a chain but does not show how to sharpen.

Very few people can sharpen a chain properly freehand. If you want a sketchy half sharp chain that vibrates jams and blunts quick then fine. If you want a chain that cuts at least as good as new then the right guide and file is the way to go. Also file the depth gauges with a guide or the chain will either make dust, jam, cut squiff or all of these at once. Ideally all cutting teeth should be the same size but a couple of shorter ones won't hurt, all angles should be equal both sides. Practice!

Files are meant to cut in one direction. Dragging them back just dulls them faster.

I have a 41 and would not trade it for a new one of any brand. My friend got on the dolmar craze that was going on for a while and purchased one. My 41 will cut faster

Thanks for taking the time to film and explain that. I think I'll start with a good spray of Marvel Mystery Oil before starting to sharpen. Probably a good time for a quick clean-up at the covered drive shaft while at it. Thanks again.

Sorry dude, and not to rant on, as I never leave bad comments, but while you have the proper file I guess, your angle changes a lot through the stroke, and you are not getting the top of the tooth at all on some of them, as seen by the gap of the close up filing...Never checked raker heights, as well take a little piece of wood and knock down the burr...If you truly want to sharpen properly, get a guide that attaches, and ensure consistent angles, depths and pitch...you'd be amazed at how much more consistent it would be, and you would see what a sharp saw is like. If you are worried about tooth size and truly cutting straight, every once in a while take some calipers and measure them all, filing them down to the smallest tooth, but that's if you really want a precisely (and anally) sharpened saw...Cheers

The file should also be moved in a level position, not at an up or down angle.

FoMoCo1 on the package of the chain it will tell you the up angle its usually 10 degrees

FoMoCo1 aome chains require ten degress low from square, while some requre a square filing. As stated in the chain maker manual.

just bad technique brother...that's all. You can dress it anyway you like, but it is poor habits that lead to shortened cutting life...Cheers
