How to Sharpen a Corner Chisel

Corner chisel sharpening can be fun, but there are a few things that make it different from how you sharpen a normal chisel. Here is how I sharpen a corner chisel.

I love using my corner chisel to buff out mortises! Super cool to see a corner chisel sharpening tutorial! Since I only timber frame, i tend to only care that the thing is square and cuts true. I mainly work with Doug Fir, so my chisels dull a bit quicker than if I were to be working with pine or other east coast conifers. I can’t imagine the amount of sharpening that I would have to have to do if I had to work with oak, or were a shipwright😂

I picked up a corner chisel at a garage sale and made a hash of sharpening it using my grinder. I thank you for the instruction. Merry Christmas from Stillman Valley Illinois.

You can see his chisel has a grinder mark on it too. I just got a chisel gouge and somebody almost ruined it with a grinder. I think it’s salvageable but it only takes one silly person to ruin a tool that’s been around for a hundred years

I have some UltraSharp plates and all 3 in the set did a good job of getting way up into the corner.

Haha. May hands are the same color. Bought three Stanley Everlast chisels of Ebay. 1/4 was a dream 30 minutes was flat and sharpened 1/2 & 3/4 the backs were just terrible. 3 hours into them and still not done. I already bought and sharpened a couple corner chisels just like you did in the video. Thanks for the video

some Squair files are actually octagonal so the corner has a small flat spot. like triangular files. so I would check that first. generally if the chisel is decent it is fairly hard the file should be harder and would cut. but it will dull the file very quickly. so generally I would not use one for this. unless you are talking of diamond files. in that case it should be great for it!

I've used mine cutting or cleaning hinge mortises on doors, the kind you walk through.

they are fantastic for large mortices. yes it is cheap window cleaner. it will evaporate quickly so the plates do not rust.

I was taught how to sharpen and use a corner chisel by an Amish timber framer. He said it was important to leave the point at the corner of the chisel as it was used as a reference in aligning the tool to the top of the corner of the cut. If sharpened properly the point is sharp enough to easily cut the corner cleanly. I used my 1" corner chisel when I built a timber frame house and it worked just fine. Bill Barr of Barr Tools has a video of sharpening a corner chisel and he also leaves the needle sharp point when sharpening. Your method though seems like it would cut pretty well too. Wranglerstar also doesn't seem to show the point in his corner chisel sharpening video. p.s. A video on how to make a leather sheath for a corner chisel would also be great!

There are different ways to sharpen everything. No right or wrong. If you sharpen with water stones you have to leave the point as the corner on the stone gets slightly rounded over time.

Thanks for the vid! I just bought an old one on ebay. I'm building a 3 bent timber frame, that's easily 40 mortices, so that's a lot of mortice corners to clean up. I expect this ome to speed up the work considerably.. Question though: you mention squareness isn't that important. But wouldn't you agree that you'd want it to be square so as to be able to clean out a blind mortice all the way to the bottom? Else I'd still be doing the last bit with a regular chisel. The tenon won't hit the bottom but you know, to wrap up a good mortice. Also, looking at the process, do you think it would make sense to use a triangular shape slip stone? It would make it a bit easier to get into the corner when the bevels aren't exactly to the same angle (which I'm sure they won't be when I'm sharpening the first couple of times).

Sounds like you are about to have fun. I rairly worry about the bottom of my mortices. Normally make them 1/8"-1/4" deeper then they need to be. A triangular slip stone would work. You just have to be careful to not grind into the other side with the tip.

Doesn’t taking the burr off on your strop cause scratches on other tools if it’s embedded in the leather compound? Sweet chisel by the way, thanks for the lesson James.

The burr blows away. It does not imbed in. It is an ultra fine wire that blows off. Hope that answers the question.

Yes. She reached her goal. We we're able to raise enough for her to get the roof on and a good bit of the next step. She actually just posted a picture on Instagram today of the roof being completed. So now it will be able to stay dry throughout the winter and she can move on at the pace that life will let it happen.

Speaking of sharpening odd sh-hapes; I found a listing of gedge pattern augers but I can find anything on sharpening those. Do you have an idea or even a technique? Or is the grand tip; don't buy those?

Yeah. Those are a pain. You sharpen them the exact same way as standard augers however you need to use a rat tail file.

Is your diamond plate getting a little worn out, or is that just a camera thing?

I think it is just a camera thing. unless you are talking about the extra Corse plate. that one had a factory defect. the surface started to bubble up. they sent me a new one and let me keep this one. the edges are still good on this one so for things like this it is great!

@@WoodByWrightHowTo It was the extra coarse plate. I think I remember you mentioning the defect a while back now. With the amount of sharpening you do, a little wear wouldn't have surprised me. It is nice to know that those things just keep going. I love mine.
