For the sanding part, I line a cup with sandpaper and swirl the pencil around in it. It collects all the graphite powder in the cup. You can simply tap the cup to make the graphite powder fall out of the grooves of the sandpaper and into the cup.

Use a clutch pencil. Then you can extend the lead as far as you want without all the work. Of course it looks less fancy, but it is more pratical

This seems to be the common use now. Im in college learning all this, so it would be a nice thing to experiment with and to see if I like it. I always just used a sharpener to do it. It seems my dad likes it too, so I might.

Save the graphite from the sandpaper in a small container so you can use it for sharing w/ brushes. Especially on bigger drawings.

That was so cool and very helpful to me. I'm going to purchase my 1st sandpaper and razor to sharpen pencils/graphite ect. Yep I'm very new. I'll learn so much from you. Many thanks for your instructions. It's always been such a bummer to have pencils break in the sharpners. Ineffective, frustrating and so wasteful. This method seems so much better. I'll keep patient during the most definite learning curve time. Be well 😀

Just buy 2mm clutch lead holder, Staedtler/faber castell. +buy lead pointer sharpener or use the one integrated in the pen. Sharpening wooden pencil is obsolete.

If you like that kind of tip then I would recommend a 2 mm clutch pencil. You can buy any lead hardness you like and then you can spend time drawing instead of "woodworking"
