I use my Stihl raker file to sharpen my pruners and loppers. It is a thin flat file. The reason Iuse it is because it is handy and I use it all the time to sharpen my chainsaws. I also spray my pruning tools with Stihl tree sap and lubricant that Iuse on my Stihl hedge trimmers. It will remove any tree sap from the blades and lubricate them to prevent rust. I spray them down and wipe them off with a shop towel.

Gosh I didn't know about using a round file!! How could I be so stupid!? It makes sense now, so thank you so much!

Ekaterina So glad it was helpful. Round files are one of those things most people don't have or even think about - we're just so used to seeing flat ones.

Gardening Products Review I have a selection of these files and have already used them on my bypass prunes and it really had worked like a treat! There's a clean cut every single time now. Also oiling your gardening tools is as important as sharpening them. It makes a colossal difference! Thank you again for your video!

You're welcome! So glad to hear that your pruners are working welll now. And yes, lubrication makes a huge difference!

Out of curiosity - why don't you disassemble the pruners, clean them proper (sand ingress is quite bad), sharpen them and assemble back. This way you can use any tool for sharpening of your choice, including whetstones, sandpaper, benchgrinder, etc.

Like to see that your pruner is good and "dirty" looking, well used...does not have to look "pretty"...... Is the Smith's diamond sharpening rod available in Canada?...thanks for your time and experiences

Those corona pruners are beautiful. I found an old super rusty pair and just removed the rust to see they're the same ones

At 3:52 when stroking the back side of the blade.. the cutting edge is now above the other counter blade edge.. . What affect will this have on the quality of cut ? At 6:00 you are "flattening " the back of the counter blade. Given that only a minute part of the edge of the blade was getting shiny, the sharpening stone had to be tilted, not flat. Am I correct, and what affect will this have on the use of the tool. , quality of the cut. ?

Thank you for the easy instructions. My Horie-Horie came with the sharpening device, the diamond spike one. Here I thought it was a cheap sharpener they threw in..ha! Out I go to sharpen all my garden tools.

Hi, thanks for this well presented. Can I ask which grade is the sharpening rod?
@horaciocastillo1435
@horaciocastillo1435 5 лет назад
DMT make this diamond files in 3 grades: coarse,medium and fine. It is a well known brand. Medium for this type of tools. Like the fine for pocket knives.

I usually just take them apart and sharpen the blade on a stone like a knife, the angle is pretty high compared to a usual knife that I sharpen.
@GardeningProductsReview
@GardeningProductsReview 5 лет назад
It's easier to get a really nice sharp edge when you take them apart but it's a bit of a pain so I'll only take it apart once or twice a year (mostly to give it a good clean). For the rest, I sharpen the blades in place (like in this video).

So where exactly where would a person get this same diamond rod you used here in this vid and the cost of it.

Amazon or, if you're in Canada, you can also get them at Lee Valley tools (online or at a store outlet). www.amazon.ca/dp/B07HBM6H8G/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=gs2&linkId=ba6dc136dab456bc9548c5d6d218484c&creativeASIN=B07HBM6H8G&tag=miraclefarms2-20&creative=9325&camp=1789

Thanks for posting this, the round file or stone was not completely apparent at first - the conical diamond file made more sense. As for those ceramic stones like that flat white one shown, some are so fine as to be difficult to use for projects like this, more for polishing than removal? Nice to know this info as these things do get dull if used much at all!!

Everyone leaves out the most important part...prepping or property cleaning the tool first with soap, water and steel wool, then oil.

A set of files is not that expensive. Especially if you get them from Harbor Freight.

FLAT - Keeping sharpening stone flat on 'back side' - I did Not see it fat, you held it at angle. > Both Times! @ 3:55 . . . 4:25 is where flat file held Flat file On Top of blade Edge. Did I miss something? Thought file ran along the Back while flat flat against it. ?
@GardeningProductsReview
@GardeningProductsReview 5 лет назад
Hi Karen, I'm sorry that that it looks like I was demurring at an angle, but I can assure you that I'm keeping the file and stone flat. I've sharpened countless bypass pruners and bypass loppers and have always adhered to this procedure. I'm glad you brought this point up however because it's important to know that camera angles are so important to the viewer. We will try to do a better job at shooting at angles that show what we're trying to demonstrate and to make it clearer to our viewers. Thanks for letting us know, and thanks for being a part of the Gardening Products Review community, it is greatly appreciated.

Karen, you saw correctly, I saw the same thing . . . then He tried to make excuses about camera angles. The entire process was incorrectly handled. Hand held . . . scrapping away with dry tools . . . didn't assure me.
