A 70/30 mix of methylated spirits / water in a spray bottle is a really cheap & effective way to dissolve the sap & gunk (the water stops the meths evaporating too quickly) so you can wipe it off. I favour the Dremel or stones as a angle grinder can make a real mess of the blade in a flash if you’re not careful.
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 2 года назад
Will have to try that mixture 👍. Angle grinder with flappy sanding disc is actually quite forgivable but yeh in the wrong hands can make a mess 😀

Yeah man got to take it real easy on those ones where the wheel is spinning up into the teeth. It can grab real hard on the flappy disk sanders. I just did my 24in cutters and il tell you it took hrs with a damn file and im really good at it but the time it took. Yeah im looking to use the disk sanding wheel on a small angle airtool. Thanks for the video. I used penatrating fluid and a wire brush then a wire cup on my angle grinder.

Just ordered some stones for the dremel, picked up some grease from screwfix today and have a new Bosch battery arriving tomorrow for my long reach cutters but i'm going to use your razor/stanley blade method this time around when i maintain the cutter blades. Great thorough video and appreciate your upload and tips here. Great job by the way and many thanks.

finally a video that talks about leaving burrs on on the back of the blade. What grit is the sanding stone you use?

Yep if you want the cleanest cut you need a good edge. Think the whetstone is 600 or 1000

Mine always seem dull still after dremal. Time to take it apart. Im always worried its not going to put back together right lol
@RJLgardens

Thats probably because you're not taking enough off with the dremel, focus on getting a sharp tooth, not a shiny one 😅. Remember how it goes back together and you should be fine, its pretty easy. Good luck with it 👍

Not quite as heavily engineered compared to the hs82 . How much does it usually cost to have blades sharpened ? Thank you
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 2 года назад
Yeh defo not a pro set of blades that's for sure. I have no idea what shops charge these days, i have never once taken my blades to get sharpened, always done it myself. From what i have seen some shops do though it is not pretty 😂, all depends how good and thorough they are, most shops are average at best though imo.

A grinder requires great skill to not damage. Use a Dremel instead.
@7magicful
@7magicful Год назад
@@gtoddwilliams How would you make a straight edge with Dremel? It will stay convex, not good. And Dremel stone gets out of shape fast. better to practice with the grinder and get your skill soon.

A high grit flap disk makes this a 20 min job...
@7magicful
@7magicful Год назад
What number the grit should be?
@MrSparkums
@MrSparkums Год назад
@@7magicful At least 120 or higher if it's your first time, a used one with a rounded edge makes getting into the corners easier.... Be careful, get the angle just right and just barely touch it up or you can take too much off and the heat treatment will be damaged, you'll see the color change. They will dull much faster if you do.. Easiest to clam the blades to a workbench too.. It's easy with a little practice but, careful..lol

Wire brush 5 inch grinder for the clean and then I use 3 mm thick cutting disc and gently sharpen I’m an ex trady so it’s all fine for me but for those that haven’t used grinders before. Don’t use this method as the disc can explode spinning at 5k
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens 7 месяцев назад
Flap discs are generally safer than grinding discs and also wont heat the metal up as much. Harder to do the radius with a solid disc as well.

The gearbox box clean should have been done before replacing blades and fresh grease on all parts really let you done that part Sir . Well done for doing your own service engine degreaser on blades works well and is cheap dry then oil blades in the open position after each use .
@RJLgardens
@RJLgardens Год назад
If it was an old neglected gearbox i would certainly fully clean out the old crud but as said in the video this wasnt too bad so opted to just add some fresher grease, but i get what your saying.
