Only safe way to judge the sharpness and usefulness of an edge or a fishing hook as well. If you'll keep your hooks sharp, you'll catch more of the bigger fish and that's just how it works. I get done sharpening and both thumbnails are a disaster area.

For me as an urban dweller who sharpens pocket and kitchen knives, I've come to love these triangle sharpeners (spyderco does the original, there's a cheap one by lanksy). It's not much slower than using a rod, actually. Love how a maintained knife is pretty much razor sharp in a few seconds with these. I only use a wet stone, when I have to repair damage these days. Get well soon! Take all the time you need!

Lars, can you sharpen an axe with a tank???? Lol. Maybe. Just kidding. We love your content. Over watching you for years, your content helped me most when the power went out, everything froze, and we kept warm and helped my neighbors. If I didn't have your information, we would have been bad off. It has been things that aren't shown in some survival books that mattered the most from your experiences. Thank you. We kept warm, and helped others. But we were prepared. GOD bless you and your family.!!!! 😁

Thanks for this Lars. I also learned from my Grandfather who was a machinist in a Steel Mill. I believe most people over think the whole knife-axe-tool sharpening thing. As you mentioned it can be a hobby to try to get the most crazy razor sharp polished edge, but that type of edge is not required for everyday use. Lonnie on Far North Bushcraft has also mentioned people tend to take their knives to a stone when all it needs is a rub or two on a strop or steel. The knife will last a lot longer. Cheers Mike.

That is a good philosophy for sharpness Lars, I'm using a very similar one myself but...I got to be able to sharpen my knives/axes quickly or I find that I won't do it when I should and the knife can quickly slide into the "non-safe" sharp category. I use a drill with a sanding plate with a combination of fine sanding discs and a homemade rough stroping wheel. I find it works well and it's very fast. I hand strop or, use a ceramic stone to finish. All my knives become convexed very quickly with this method.
