I created this video video for an article on my website about how to get a great shave. Thank you for over 1 million views, plus all the likes and comments! I'm so glad that I've been able to help you learn how to shave!
By the way, I've filmed a new shaving video where I go into even more detail about the shaving process, so if you still have questions after watching this, then please also see this: • A full wet shave demon... .
Still have questions after watching this video? Then watch my Shaving Q&A, where I answer the top questions posted in the comments below: • Answers to your shavin... .
The proper and traditional way to shave is with a safety razor or with a straight razor. It's better for you, because you get closer shaves and your total shaving costs are much lower. With shaving blades, there's no plastic that enters the equation, which means less pollution and less waste. Many of you have asked me what DE safety razor I'm using in the video. I'm not sure. I know it's a Gillette Classic Safety Razor. Some have said it resembles a G1000. During one of my online searches, I found a 1975 Gillette Knack v2 razor that resembles it as well. Don't get hung up on the exact model, that's not important. Shaving with a DE razor and paying attention to proper shaving technique is what's really important here.
Here are two articles on my website that will give you further help:

And that is just it, my friend. The multiple blade system does not work very well. Even one small pass can clog up the many open rows and cause uneven blade contact, which is the drag and snag so badly. With one blade, your hair can only end up behind the single blade. Once the razor starts to "overflow" you simply clean it out by opening it up and running it under the sink. And you're back to ful performance. This is key, give the razor what it needs to do a good job, take it slow and listen to the razor, make any ajustments you may need and take your time.

A good aftershave has three purposes: disinfect, moisturize and deodorize. If you didn't cut yourself while shaving, if your face doesn't get dry after shaving, and if you don't feel the need to "make it smell nice", then a cold water rinse is sufficient to close up the pores and get the soap off.

I was surprised at how easy it is to shave with a safety razor. I got my first one last week and thought I would end up with a bunch of cuts. Considering you can get 100 blades for under $10 I doubt I will ever go back to my old fusion proglide. Shaving feels much better with a safety razor too.

Yea i cant believe how long it took me to realize that. Where i live 4 blades for a mach3 costs like 13 euros, so i always used them for as long as i could (witch resulted in me shaving with dull blades), because i couldn't afford buying new ones every month or so.

It's ok to go against after taking off the beard initially. Once you become proficient at safety razor shaving you can use a technique called "buffing." It will give a very close shave where you can go a day without because it's so close. The technique is also used with strait razor shaving.

Nice. I use mug and soap too. I use a blade every 2 or 3 shaves though cause my hairs are so thick I like the blades to be as sharp as possible. The cartridge razors clog with hair for me too much so the safety razors are perfect.

I don't know how you guys can do it, maybe it's something I'm doing/not doing, because I can't get a close, clean shave with this even if I do 5 passes. I can't go against the grain with it, I did that and everytime I cut myself. I have been using Gillette Mach 3/other triple blade razors my entire shaving life, sort to say. 2 passes, one with and the 2nd against the grain, smooth but tremendous irritation. I'm doing all the prep, 10 min before the shave, hot water, shaving cream applied with brush, which is presoaked in hot water. No matter what blade(s) or different razors I use, I still get burns and irritation and/or not a close shave.
@Jhact007

Don't shave against the grain when shaving your face. That's what is causing the irritation
@Editor_Hound

I get that, but if I don't, it's not a close shave. If I run my hand through my skin it's like sandpaper.
@RaoulPop
@RaoulPop 9 лет назад
Theodor Dinu Ricky Stubblefield It's your technique, guys. It still need work. You can get a really close shave with a DE razor or with a modern razor, if that's your thing. But the technique needs improvement. I suggest you also watch the videos on *****'s channel.
@RaoulPop
@RaoulPop 9 лет назад
Ricky Stubblefield It's the little subtleties that make all the difference, they're learned with time through trial and error. Unless someone were to film a shave with a macro lens from 1-2 inches away and go super slow, they're hard to pick up from a normal shaving video.
@bloozedaddy
@bloozedaddy 9 лет назад
Theo...it sounds like you might be pressing against the skin using the safety razor. I used a Mach3 also for years and with those razors you have to press....the blades for a safety razor are so much sharper you really can't press or you'll tear your face up. You just want it to glide. So you do the first pass down...the second pass across and the third pass up the neck etc. Each time you re-apply the cream,,,and it has to be moist enough for the razor to glide...no resistance because the crème is too tight or thick. If you have a thick beard you might try Feather blades. Another good blade is the Israeli Personna Red.

During the summer months, I typically use a splash after shave. I love the smell of them. In the winter months, I find I use more balm because my skin dries out more and I need extra moisturization.

2019 Happy New Years learners, like myself. I bought a double edge safety razor and blades. After shaving I rinse the razor & blade and place it in a put with veg-oil. I have used all kinds of razor blades, however, much to my amazing delight the double edge razor blade provides a nice smooth shave. I did follow the videos instructions. PS: I do use a hot wet face cloth and a lubricant connect oil before applying the shave cream. Works for me and he said one blade can provide 5 shaves! Trial and error. Mr. Bruce Senior.

hi,sorry to correct you (at 5.40 ) but its not the new blade that cuts you its the older blade that does .The blade is at its best when brand new and degrades (gets blunter with each shave) you do NOT break it in. THIS is not just based on my40years of shaving with one , but was a well known fact back in my days before modern silly razors came out. work it out for your self....magnify a brand new blade it will be straight and smooth, an undamaged honed edge.........now magnify a used one it will resemble an edge like the top of a can after being opened with a can opener sharp bumpy and jagged. that's why we throw it away and put a new one in. SORRY BUT I'M RIGHT.
@RaoulPop
@RaoulPop 9 лет назад
It's always so nice to meet someone who knows he's always "RIGHT". I enjoyed your comment. I must have cut myself with an old blade, just like you said. It's likely the bright lights in my bathroom aged the blade rapidly. I must remember to change them with dimmer bulbs.
@lolwhittingham

Raoul Pop yes, I wasn't saying you CANT get cut from a new blade., but merely pointing out that you are at greater risk from the old blade. and that you don't break them in.

I worked around chefs for years. They always told me you'll only cut yourself if the knife is dull or pitted. When you use a dull knife or a dull blade to shave the blade doesn't glide on your skin then it will cut you.

@maximillianexcaliber6593
@maximillianexcaliber6593 9 лет назад
One correction... Metal shrinks when cold which means that a razor blade actually becomes sharper. The best thing to do is to submerge your razor in ice-water because as the metal shirks, the tiny nicks in the blade become smaller decreasing the chance of you cutting yourself. Your are correct in that hair follicles need to be heated, heating hair causes it to expand and soften making it easier to cut.

That's exactly why I do it :-) Actually, sometimes a few hairs grow higher up on the cheekbones and I can't stand them, so I shave higher to make sure I get them. In 17 years of shaving, I haven't had more hair grow higher on my face, so the old wives' tale about more hair growing where you shave isn't true.

@micahemerson388
@micahemerson388 8 лет назад
If you have very thick hair, as I do, it's important to use a sharp (new) blade every time. Brush on your cream and let it sit on your face for a couple of minutes. This will thicken the cream, soften the hair and suspend those whiskers in there nice and tight. Take your time, you can feel when the razor is doing a good job, don't force or rush it. Clean often, make sure once both sides are full enough to impede the razors performance, clean it out. I often times have to open mine up and give it a blast under the sink. Just be careful, don't rush it, and make sure your razor is always given it's chance to do its job.
@jwest88

+Micah Emerson the cut left a small scar. I'm sure it will fade. Maybe completely with time. But I've never been cut in such a way with multi blade razors. I might just call it quits with the inappropriately named safety razor.

There's a learning curve with the safety razor. And if you thought the cut you got with it was bad, don't try shaving with a straight-edge razor. The learning curve is even steeper and longer with it and you can easily do unwanted cosmetic surgery on your face with it. If you're more comfortable with multi-blade razors, go ahead and use them. No reason to go on doing something you don't enjoy, unless you really want to achieve it as a goal.

This is actually just some hipster bullshit trend. You'll get less ingrown hairs in exchange for a patchier, unclean shave. You'll cut yourself just as much as you could with any other razor you aren't familiar with, until you get familiar with it. Everyone needs something different. This isn't the universal perfect shave like other videos claim.
@Doctor_Mobius
@Doctor_Mobius 9 лет назад
***** I mean the shave isn't as close, and the razor has a harder time getting some of the hairs it goes over. Sounds like it works for you. I bounce between one of these and a regular $20 multi-blade razor. On me, the safety razor refuses to get a majority of the hairs, even in multiple passes until I stop because of irritated skin, while the modern razor has an easier time shaving everything down evenly, but usually causes a few razor burns on the first pass. Both I might cut myself with once each shave.

Nothing DE shaving opens a plethora of combos - diff creams/soaps/blades - you will eventually find the one that works for your skin. DE technique requires appx. 3 months for proficiency. I can perform a DE3 (3 pass with DE razor) in less than ten minutes for a bbs shave. A lifetime of k$ saved.
@GorillaManX70
@GorillaManX70 9 лет назад
Nothing dude don't give up on it so easily. By your comments I would gather that you only tried DE razors for a little bit. You've got to get some good blades. Astra is good. My personal favorite is lord platinum class. A lot of experienced shavers go to the insanely sharp feather blades. Be patient and learn how to use it and it will be one of the best and most economical decisions you'll ever make
@nicetna2010
@nicetna2010 9 лет назад
Nothing Do you have sensitive skin? Tough, wiry beard or softer hair? Your choice of razor/blade combo will make a difference, as will your choice of cream/soap. As I mentioned, it took me three months to get the technique down but now is completely worth it, no more expensive multi-blade carts for me. Stick with it, shave everyday and your technique will improve. I've tried many different razor/blade/ soap combos, more than happy to help with a suggestion if needed.

***** Proraso is ok, (the CO Bigelow at Bath & Body Works is made by Proraso) but I've always thought it lacked slickness. If you want the closet shave possible, with tons more slickness, then try the good ole' fashioned Williams Mug soap. That's what I use and there just isn't anything out there with more slickness. It provides a closer shave. The Williams Mug soap is also fun to use because you can either bowl lather it, or face lather it (face lathering method works better for me with the Williams). Some prefer to bowl lather the Williams into a thick, meringue lather by soaking the puck and brush together for 10 minutes, then dumping out the water and whipping up the lather. Others, like myself, prefer to face lather beginning with a more watery, soapy lather which we can more easily work into our beard. The more it's worked into the beard, the thicker the lather becomes - which is why it's called face lathering.

Thank you for making this. Im a mother of a teenage boy who asked me how he was to shave. It was at that moment I realised shaving my underarms and legs was very different from shaving the face. I also suspected giving him one of my razors might not work so great. Your video was great because not only did it give a brilliant deminstration that reminded me of seeing my father shave, LOL, but also the type of razor that would be good and tips on shaving cream. Thank you so much, this helped a lot.

WTF. You are damn absolutely right. I have done the step back to the DE and than forward using it as usual routine... Today I use Astra blades (100 pcs packet) and DE safety razor, I use simple palmolive naturals bar soap with olive and aloe and than Floid aftershave or idratation cream... I feel better than ever. Thank you so much Raoul. At the beginning I was skeptic but today I'm happy of the change I've done in my habits.

Tried my first shave with a DE razor today. I didn't get the best or closest shave (I had to finish up with my fusion to smooth out my chin), but there's always another day. I'm hooked!

I enjoyed your presentation. You get an excellent shave with a safely razor. I also like the fact that safety razors are more ecologically friendly.

Are all safety razors made the same on their inside? Meaning, are they all compatible with all safety razor handles?

Great Video Raoul! You managed to cover all the important points in shaving with a DE razor, really thorough. I think you could have avoided the cuts by maintaining a consistent angle on each pass. It looked like you were moving the head with your wrist a bit too much. Other than that, good job!

Great video--I agree with what you said I didn't know about the difference in blades. I have been enjoying my safety razor for over a year. I have my own style though, which uses Proraso Pre Shave Creme just a dap or two then a premium shave Creme like Bigelow again just a dab or two--I have a brush but I don't bother with it. I can finish my shave in less then 5 minutes. Lastly, I put a dab or aftershave wax. I can't imagine getting a better shave and I never get cut provided that my skin is hot and the water is hot. Thank you again for this video. BTW my methods cost more initially but the investment of $50-$75 a year is worth it for me to enjoy the art of shaving. I subscribed to your channel--keep up the good work!!!

Shaved for the first time with a safety razor today. Was certainly a bit too sloppy with it(I'm too impatient a shaver and with a rough beard like mine, horrible match up and many annoying cuts) and cut myself up a bit but something I really liked about it was there was virtually no irritation as opposed to using one of those cartridge razors. With some time, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it and shave cut-free.

@bringerofrage No blood, no glory. :-) Besides, I think the fact I had a camera in my face affected my technique a bit, and I got a little sloppy. That was a first and only take; I didn't film myself several times in order to present the best possible take, where I made no mistakes whatsoever. I didn't I don't usually cut myself.

I'm a believer. Fantastic video, thank you! My brother just picked up one of these, and I have been planning on doing so for a very long time. I use disposable cartridges, and actually sharpen them so that they last 3-4 months but the shave is terrible and its still worse for the environment. I have 3 or 4 more cartidges, but as soon as they run out, I'm switching.

Great video! I'm looking to start trying my luck with a safety razor and I found your video helpful and informative. I did noticed that in your video that you didn't have your mug with you while traveling because you were afraid of breaking it. I have found on Amazon a plastic/rubber mug made by the barber company Marvy. I have the white one because I liked the old style design, but they come in tan plastic as well or a green rubber mug. These cost around $12 and they do look pretty cheap, but they don't cost much and they're not as likely to break. I notice the word unbreakable comes up often in their description. I'm sure you may know about this already, but I thought I would share the fact. Thank you for sharing this video, it was very helpful and informative.

@TeslaDRay As I said in the video, you can use whatever blades work for you. You'll have to try several brands and see which cut your hair better than others. Some are sharper, some are duller, some use harder metals, some use softer metals, and each have different angles to the cut points, and all of these factors affect your shave quality. While a certain blade may work for me, it may not work for you. My advice is to go on Amazon or a shaving supply website, and order small quantities first.

my brother told me those modern multi blade razors work by the first blade pulling the hair up and then the next blades cut the hair as it's pulled up. that's why it gives such a close shave but you end up with ingrown hairs and stuff. he's been really into safety razors since my grandpa died, and he still uses my grandpas razor. he's a collector tho so he has like 30+ safety razors and 100+ different soaps. he is one of those guys that really gets into something and makes it a hobby. I just bought a kit to start doing this, so I'm trying to figure out how to do it before I just go at it.

I too travel with shaving gel instead of my mug. One tip I've found: squirt your gel on the side of the sink before you run the hot water (it will stick). Then fill the sink with water. The gel will stick to the sink and warm up while you let your brush hydrate. Then, you can use your hand to fish the gob of gel off the sink (do it easy and you'll keep the gob of gel together). Then, you can put it into the brush and rub it on your face. Also, one tip....wet your face (I use the brush with no soap) before you start lathering up. It will help it stay moist longer

Quite good video. And the good thing is that you told us how often you change the blades i.e. how long they last, their durability. Will try to calculate the TCO for a Safety Razor vs Gilette Fusion Power which became too expensive for me. I guess that Feather is the proper choice for a razor blades.
