Breaking down the fundamentals to driving a 18 speed tractor. ** NOTICE I SAY REVERSE MAKES UP THE “18” GEARS. THATS WRONG! LOW H/L MAKES UP THE “18” GEARS**
I've watched numerous videos on how to shift an 18 speed transmission and this video, by far, gives the best explanation on how to properly shift an 18 speed. Over the past 30 years I have drove 7,8,9,10, super 10, 13, 15. and 18 speed trans. The 18 speed trans is my favorite. I drove one for over 15 years. They are not complicated to learn how to shift and I always split every gear. I never skipped gears unless I was empty or bobtailing.
Now I get it. I'm a Trucker from the UK, and it was very rare we got manual gearboxes in this day and age...But I never drove a Peterbilt, now I am in Canada and I am lilely to get behind the wheel of one of these babies... Now your demonstration got me knowing what to do, and how to handle it. I have driven some manuals but Euro Trucks with Paccar MX13 engine and Manual Gearbox, but its been a while. Only 2 or 3 times in my career I drove a manual.
I’m trying to learn how to downshift more consistently in American truck sim to maybe eventually get my CDL when i’m of age and man do I appreciate how specific and concise this was, love the sound of your rig too! safe travels and stay blessed!
That sounds a bit high to me! We used to shift like that when I started in 1974, but modern trucks run at much lower RPM. In low range you can shift at 12 or 13 hundred RPM, and you don't need to rev it above 1,500 RPM in high range. If I have a heavy load and am climbing a hill I might run it up to 1,700 RPM. You'll save fuel and your engine will last forever.@@relaxingshorts8587
Just reconnected with my dad after 18 years. Had a good few days with him, but drove him back to the truck stop and he showed me inside the truck. I drive a manual and have for over 10 years but was confused on how this worked. Thanks for the explanation, gonna call him and ask him so more questions 😂
Thanks brother. I drive a 13 Speed and seeing you drive the 18 Speed... brother you just opened up my eyes to the fact that there no difference in shifting the gears. I got it now.
Thanks for the Fantastic Video, It might sound silly but I've just started playing American Truck Sim with a Complete Sim Setup and this info Transferred over and worked Perfectly to the Simulator
Thanks bro; I really liked your explanation , I learned 12 yrs ago but have been driving a automatic for the last 6yrs and I’m trying to remember how . I find it is a bit more difficult than I thought it would be . I am very rusty, thanks for the great video
BRO! This made it so much easier. I appreciate this video. I’ve been doing research on getting my CDL and will be starting soon. I drive stick shift on the regular and have heard that clutch on a truck is different. No one explained the splitter and downshift as clear as you bro! Thanks!
i concur, you are a great teacher, the way you explained it is fantastic. I am amazed how you can remember what gear and what range you are once you are on the road for hours on end,.
You deserve way more subs and views. Thanks for explaining it so well. Trump supporters get a bad rep because “we’re all racist” nah. God bless you and thank you for this video. This helped me a lot and I pray the best for you, and all. Thank you sir!
This video was way more detailed and explained then any other video I’ve seen. God bless truckers, God bless America. Again, thank you sir, truly, it is appreciated! Hope you get tons of subs and views, hope God blesses you beyond your belief in Life. Jesus is Lord, and Savior.
Amazing tutorial and thanks for breaking it down to where any age can understand shifting. Best video I've seen when it comes to this. Thanks bro! #JaxFL
I've never driven a truck, I just like them lol Do you basically floor it when you're towing? In the video it looks like there's very little throttle response..
Thanks for posting such an informative video brother. May I know if you take your foot off throttle when putting the splitter back before shifting to an upper gear? For example: If I shift to 5th from 4th overdrive, do I have to let go off throttle to bring the splitter back to 4th gear?
For 18 speed you ain't got to start off in low range you can just go flip the button to high range but for starters is a good video if you can drive a nine-speed 9-speed ain't nothing but a 18 and 13-speed
Got a question for you. Here in Germany everyone drives automatic trucks these days. I wonder if this is a thing in the USA? I would love to drive a truck like yours one time. At work I casually drive a Mercedes Actros with an electronic power shift. You still have a clutch but its not as "complicated" as you 18 speed
lot of the newer trucks are Allison automatics now, but the old timers still order new trucks with the 18 speed Fuller transmissions, there just the best for heavy pulling, and now theses days when you go for your CDL if it’s an automatic transmission then your restricted to only drive automatic trucks, have to bring a stick shift truck to get non restricted license.
Young man, I have been driving almost 40 years and this is the best video explaining how to shift an 18 speed transmission! God bless and thank you for teaching the young and us old drivers!!!
I’m taking my Cdl class this winter through the union. And can’t wait to get behind one of these bad boys. My father and brothers are all truck drivers. I’m an operator. But would love to be able to drive one of these trucks some day. Also. Truck sounds mean!!!!
Second that motion. Looking at transition from always 10 speed to next lvl. And thankfully this came recommendations. Standard H pattern, splitting every gear. Can't beat the instruction in this video. Quick simple and straight to the point. No fluff.
I must agree, I’m going to start learning how to drive an 18 speed and it seems overwhelming cause it’s happening quick along with dealing with the road and trailer. This video does help me comprehend it easier. Just have to watch it over and over. Thanks👍
Rode with my grandpa and dad in 18 wheelers in the 70's and 80's. They tried to explain to me how to shift but being a kid I didn't pick up what they were saying. You just made it all clear in a few minutes. Great Vid.
MY MAN!! i've been driving auto trucks for 7 months now i'm ready for manual, starting thursday morning in training and now i understand it 1000 times better than before thanks man 🙌
From auto to manual! The only thing I'd tell you is don't try to upshift with the Jakes on. This guy is experienced and can pull it off, but a new guy might drop a transmission out on the highway. I'm a 48 year long haul veteran, and I don't even up shift with the Jakes on, but I know some guys can pull it off. Turn 'em off when you first start learning.
I’ve only driven 10speeds & watched countless videos of “how to shift 18 speeds” so far this is the only video I’ve understood from start to finish. Thank you for getting straight to the point & simplifying the gear pattern. Beer on me if you ever come to Atlanta.
Great for beginners. I would have loved to have an instructor like you when I learned, but since then I’ve learned so much more. I learned to drive on a 78” 379. That clutch was hell for a 120lb 15 year old lol. So eventually I learned to avoid using it unless I had to. 😂👍
I'm just a gamer. I found this video looking for tutorials for American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator. This helps more than the game tutorials I've found. Thanks for making this video. You're helping more than just truckers.
Was already covered in a later video. Thanks for watching. Reverse has 2 ranges so technically it is gears but yes it’s not how the 18 gear is configured
