Been riding for years here in So Cal , Gorman, jawbone , local spots etc. and I find this very informative and helpful. It’s been 4 years since I’ve been on trails where are u riding in this video?
That’s awesome! I’m so glad you found this video helpful! This video was filmed at my house! I’ve been working on building a track, but for now I have some trails that run around the property!
Are you sure that I don’t need to use the clutch to downshift? I’m getting my first trail dirt bike soon but not using the clutch to downshift sounds scary lol
I'm 25 and I have not had a chance to be around dirt bikes as a kid and now I'm having to learn how to ride solely off RU-vid videos and your videos definitely teach you the things you need to know
Thank you so much! That’s awesome! I am so glad you have found dirt bike riding, and are getting more invested in becoming a better rider! I have a full playlist for dirt bike beginners I really think would help you as well! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have!
New subscriber here. I'm 28 never ridden a dirt bike in fear I'd injure myself given I've already injured both knees 😂. Recently my 16 YO cousin walked me through these steps. Now watching your videos is giving me more confidence.. now I'm getting into this and planning to get me a bike of my own. Thanks Dude 🤙
That’s awesome I’m glad you got your dirt bike and starting to master the controls! Now is when the exponential growth begins! Keep practicing, getting more comfortable. I’m stoked to have you as a part of the Rad Family! Just let me know if you have any questions!
Nice Jody! Im glad you are getting more comfortable with shifting gears and riding your dirt bike! I also have some dirt bike riding adventure videos if you want to see where I like to ride! Please Subscribe for support! Thank you for joining the Rad Family!
This guy is an absolute legend I’m getting a dirt bike for my birthday in October and I don’t know how to shift but I don’t want to tell anyone in case they say I can’t have the bike now but now I know how to :)👑👑
I just bought my first bike today (CRF250L), watched this video, and went and rode around my block about 5 times haha. Only got up to third gear but this video helped so much in my confidence trying to ride for the first time! Thanks so much! The getting into neutral was the most important lesson for me 🙏
I am so glad to hear that this helped you! I have only had a channel for a year and have only taken it seriously the past few months. Please Subscribe and check out my other adventures! I am here to help with any questions you may have on any of the topics I cover. Thanks again MotoMatt! See you on the trails!
I’m 14 years old I’m a boy this helped so much I’m a beginner I have recently been in a dirtbike accident fell of scraped my whole body still recovering but never give up 💪🏻
That’s unfortunately how it goes. We go down, but always get back up! I would start practicing all the correct body positions to avoid accidents like these! What happened in your crash?
Absolutely! I always suggest that too, just to save the dirt bikes transmission! The only times I shift without clutch is when I’m racing, and really trying to dive into a corner as fast as possible! Also making sure the throttle is off, and rpms are not too high will also help save the motor!
@@RadAdventureDude Nothing too crazy just a Chinese bike the magician 250. Good start from what I've heard and its really clean for the price. If I get my endorsement it's already set up for the road too! Just too add I'm already feeling more confident using the clutch.
@@alantaylor6691 I’ve ridden all my life. When I was 3 I started ona crf50. After this comment I ended up with a cr85r, vforce 3, fmf fatty and fmf shorty, hot rods crank, wiseco top end, fresh cylinder. However I was watching this video as I was confused as how to use a clutch.
@@490Adrian Since you were 3?! Lucky you! How old are you now? I'm 44 and total noob to motorbikes. Just learnt to use a clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc 2-stroke dirt bike the other day. But I want a dirt bike of my own! I've recently moved to a 150 acre property so I have all the dirt riding land I could want right at my front door. I could ride everyday if I had a bike of my own.
@@alantaylor6691 12yo at the moment. If I were you I’d get a 230 or a new Honda 250 quad, not too much guts but definitely some bottom end. The Honda 250 quads have a odd technology where there is a clutch but you also can shift without it and no harm, not like shifting without the clutch is bad if you power shift but it’s a good beginner bike. Another thing to look at is a 400ex it’s a trail quad but it’s got some guts to make you happy, just be careful the first couple rides, after you’re adapted. Just make sure to keep up on maintenance and have a tool box filled with goodies.
@@490Adrian A quad would be fun, thanks for the suggestions I'll keep them in mind. How did you get on with learning to use the clutch on your motorbike since your original comment? Got the hang of it? I've had a couple of rides with the clutch on my neighbour's 80 cc but I still have to think about what I'm doing and have stalled a couple of times coming out of bogs. Still haven't 100% got the feel of the throttle/clutch yet.
Thank you so much this helped after my big crash! I was in 4th gear, a leech was on my boots i shook it off but i accidentally hit the shifter and it went to 1st then tossed me and broke my leg! But now I am more aware
I am so glad this helped! I don’t like to hear you went through a big crash, but we all do! The most important part is you learn from your mistakes, and you get back up on the dirt bike! Hope you the best recovery!
That’s awesome! The hardest part about learning on a 450 will be how much torque a 450 has. I’m always here to help you with any questions you have, so always feel free to reach out!
No sir! haha I was in EMT school over the winter and spring semester, and it was too much to keep up with videos and going through basically medical school at the same time. I'm done with school and about to jump straight back into making videos just for you!
Been riding off and on for years, finally got a bike of my own back in the garage again. Always good to get back to the basics to shake the dust off! Thanks for the good advice!

I'm saving up for my first ever dirt bike and most my worries were about not understanding the clutch and gears. This amazingly cleared it up and really it's not unlike a manual car. So that helps. Thankyou and I'll be back to look at more vids. (pssstt, i checked out the clutch video when he mentioned it, totally worth it. So if you are reading this and missed it. Go take a peek)
I glad that your getting a dirt bike they are so much fun, exponentially becoming more fun the more comfortable you get! Always feel free to ask any questions you have! I am always here to help!
I haven't got my dirtbike yet I got a ktm 150 sx and im watching ur videos so I can jump on the bike being confident knowing how too shift gears and how too use my clutch and have that knowledge. like you should easily have over 500k your just great on teaching videos
Thanks dude! I’m so glad to help! I’m stoked you getting a bike! The ktm 150s are awesome bikes! On jumping just start small, and build up to bigger jumps over time! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have!
I am going to ride my friends dirt bike in the am for the 1st time. I sure do hope I can come back on here say yay I did it!! You explain things perfectly. I can understand everything you talked about. Thank you! I am clear instead of confused!
I got a me a 2002 Honda XR200R yesterday I watched this video ripped around my yard to practice took it out on my main road and jeeez thanks man really helped me 🙏🏼
If you let your clutch out too fast, without the proper amount of throttle on you will stall the bike. Then you can’t really let the clutch out too slow! Hope this helps!

this was super helpful. my nieghbor just gave his '73 kawasaki g5 from when he was a kid. its my first bike and i just realized i have absulutly no idea how to ride it lol. thanks for the help!
@@RadAdventureDude it's a carb spent today took the carb bowl off cleaned jets tweaked the air fuel mix screw alittle too losse and it came off when riding it dosent bog untell higher throttle but it may be running rich I'm goana turn off my gas and empty the carb because imma let the bike sit untell I get a new carb and intake manifold
Yes getting the jets and carburetor all cleaned will really help you! Also make sure the jet you are using is suggested for the altitude! That is a big thing I see here in Colorado!
as a Road motorcycle racer we use clutch only when shifting down and no clutch when shifting up. I was surprised when you said the opposite is true for dirt biking.
I always suggest using the clutch when you can, for the transmission of the bike. When you are racing and trying to get faster it can save a little time working through the gears without the clutch! Just make sure to let the throttle off so it doesn’t add additional stress to the motor!
Thanks when I went out the first time on my motorcycle and when I got near a hill to climb I always shifted to first fast and not going in order, but this helps and let me practice.
Oh sweet! I haven’t heard of it either, but that looks like fun! What part of your riding are you struggling with? I would love to help you more specifically!

Thank you so much! Haha yeah winter riding can get interesting! Here in Colorado the ground is all white too. It is close to time to go to the desert and get back on the bike! Always feel free to ask any questions you may have!
The biggest thing for me was getting it into that first gear without stalling and I've been working on not feathering the clutch as much and it's been going good! Idk if its working so well because my back tire is spinning out when I let the clutch out but haven't stalled on takeoff in awhile! I watched your other vid too it helped new a lot!
That’s great! All it takes is time, and it will become very natural. If your wheel is spinning out you could possibly use less throttle when releasing the clutch, or release the clutch a little slower! I am so stoked you are getting better and finding these videos useful! Keep up the great work!
Im going to get my first bike soon it is the honda crf 125 i just went to my cycle center today to try it and i fit perfectly on it but ima get it for Christmas And im really exited to learn how to shift! Im sure this video will help

This helped a lot because I used to have a ttr 110e and neutral was under gear 1, I’m planning on getting a yz125 and the mechanics are different but this vid helped a lot so that’s a subscribe

hey im 12 and i jus upgraded to a big dirtbike but i can only reach the ground with the tip of my toes i loe dirtbikes and this vid helped me i am good at riding and now i started useing clutch im really excited

I have been riding and racing my 500 and 450 my whole life. And I always use the clutch down shifting.Do not want to break a gear I just always use my clutch.Shifting up-and-down.No matter racing or not always I use it
Oh awesome, there is no better time to learn! So yes when shifting gears let off the throttle completely, then pull the clutch in and shift your gears! What kind of dirt bike do you have?

@@RadAdventureDude took my bike to work today which is about 8 miles one way. Been following your video off memory and did pretty well. Still super nervous going 50 mph even though my bike will do 75 easy.
I got my bike about 3-4 years ago! It was a friends, and I traded another bike for it! You should be able to get a good used bike for around 2-5 thousand! Hope this helps!
Before I got my dirtbike, I was nervous about having to shift and giving it gas and all that. But it’s simpler now. After you take off in 1st gear, pull the clutch in while letting completely off the throttle, shift to 2nd and let out the clutch a bit slower than you pulled it in while giving it a tiny good bit of gas. Don’t be afraid to do it, just try it
These were my exact thoughts when I bought my KLR250. I'm slowly get better, just im really nervous to ride on the main roads and stall. And I gotta use the rear brakes more.
I know how it goes, just keep practicing, and you will get much more comfortable and confident over time! Here is a video that can help you with mastering the rear brake! How to Properly use Rear Brake on Dirt Bike! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2ILDK6nnZbI.html
That’s awesome! You never can learn too much, and never know what little things will really help you improve your riding! Feel free to ask any other questions you may have!
First time on a dirtbike was today.. Got on a 110cc w/ no clutch.. Then they put me on a 450cc w/ the clutch obviously. Helluva learning curve.. But I learned it, got the bike started, into first gear, and then took off. Bike was so powerful, I just kept it in 1st gear. Also due to fear, and not knowing what the process would be to downshift.. If I got into 2nd and 3rd gear, and then wanted to slow and turn, or even make a u-turn, do I hit the foot break to slow the bike down first, then downshift from 3rd to 2nd to 1st ? I didn’t know the process, so I didn’t even try lol.
Im so glad to hear you getting out there and learning! With a clutch make sure you pull the clutch in when using the back break, or the bike will have a much better chance to stall out! Use the clutch and gear shifter to shift up. The bike will have more speed with out being as torquey and it will help you keep the front wheel on the ground. If you get to second and third gear, and now want to slow down let off the throttle, and you will feel the motor already slowing you down. Use the shifter to shift down one gear, and you will feel the motor begin to slow you down even more. When coming in to a corner, practice using the back break while pulling the clutch in to help slow and guide the bike around the corner! I really hope this helps you! Im stoked your getting out on the bike! Keep it up! What has been your favorite part about learning to ride a dirt bike? Radical Adventure Dude Word ! Thanks for the tip about a) getting off the throttle, then b) downshifting a gear, then c) pulling in the clutch, then d) using the back / foot brake. I gotta get those repetitions in. Now when I’m back in first and wanna accelerate again, can I just let the clutch go and hit the throttle (smooth), or do I need to feather the clutch and ease the throttle, like how you do when you first get the bike going ? Sorry for asking so many questions, just love learning this need hobby, and then executing it, having the power and control in my hands..
@@TopshelfJunior So that is a great question! Once the bike is in motion, and you are not applying any back break. It is okay to let the clutch out a little more quickly, because the back wheel is spinning, and this will not allow the bike to stall as easily. Like when first starting out riding the bike in the beginning! As you get better over time you will develop a habit of always having a finger on the clutch to be ready to use it at any point!!! I am glad you are so excited to get better on the bike! Be patient as all it take is time and you will be riding with ease! I am here if you have any more questions! I have a few more videos on riding basics like where to sit on the bike, and body positioning if you would like to check those out! Also Please Subscribe for all the future Adventures and how to videos to come! Thank you so much!
Yes the best way to stand on your bike will be on the balls of your foot! However you won’t be able to change gears from this position. So you will have to move your foot up towards the gear shifter to shift. Once you shift you will want to move your foot back to where you were, standing on the balls of your feet! This may feel awkward at first, but keep practicing and this will soon become very natural! Thanks for watching! I will make a video on this topic soon, so make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss it! Stay Rad!
This video was helpful I was looking for tips because i rode quads but im getting into dirtbikes i started on a 50cc which was okay and now im on a kx 250 and I was not expecting it to be so difficult lol i thought the little 50cc was kinda easy but the 250 is alot of power
Oh yeah! The 250 has way more power, and a lot more going on with the clutch and gears! Keep it up it will get much easier over time! Please Subscribe, and always feel free to ask questions!
Thank you so much Pete! I am so glad to hear that this helped you out! Please Subscribe so you do not miss any of my future videos! What kind of bike do you have?
yes if you a riding a four stroke it would be very noticeable. the engine breaking is already very strong just letting off the throttle will help alot. but down shifting with breaks would help slow you alot
Yes you can! Dewy had a great response! The engine break from letting the throttle off with the breaks will dramatically slow you down! Also when you coming out of the corner after shifting down you will have a lot more acceleration when exiting the corner! Hope this helped you out!
This really depends on when and where you will be letting the clutch out! If are not moving on the bike this needs to be a slow release so you do not stall the bike. When you are riding the bike and shifting between gears. You can let the clutch out quickly, because your back wheel is spinning and this keeps the bike from stalling! So, to answer your question no it doesn't matter. You will want to release the clutch quickly after shifting so you can return to the throttle as fast as possible. This will become a very easy and fluid motion over time! I hope this helps you really master your shifting on your bike! Please Subscribe for all the future adventures to come!
I like to suggest always using the clutch to change between any gear! You just don’t have to worry about using the clutch an throttle together unless you are just starting to roll on the dirt bike for the first time.
Great question! Answer No! Make sure you shift down one gear at a time, and release the clutch in between every gear change. This is better for us and the dirt bike! This way we don’t have too much torque coming from the engine, as we shift down through the gears! Hope this helps you!
That’s a sweet duel sport dirt bike! Great commuter, and would be great for the trails too! For riding on the road I would put hard tires on the bike for the road or you will be going through a lot of tires! Also keep in mind the street has a lot more traction than the trails, so careful when switching back and forth. That’s got me before! How long have you been riding?
Do have any recommendations on a first bike? My friend is telling me to get a 125 2 stroke since I’m not used to riding dirt bikes but I’m kind’ve a heavy set guy around 250LB and 5’9 so I was considering getting a 250 2 stroke. Great video btw 👍
A 125 2 stroke or 250 4 stroke, is always a good place to start! The 250 2 stroke you could be a good bike if you want to progress your riding, just know it will have a lot more acceleration and speed when you first start riding it!
I'm getting my first dual-sport bike in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for all kinds of info. I'll mainly be riding it for short trips around town and to work. When I drove a stick-shift car (100 years ago) I always just popped it into neutral when I was coming to a stop instead of down-shifting. It just seemed easier. I'm assuming this would be OK on a bike as well?
That’s awesome I’m glad you’re getting a new bike! Yes you can definitely put the dirt bike in neutral when coming to a stop, but you may find it harder than a stick shift to just pop into neutral. Also on a dirt bike as you just pull in the clutch you can bring the dirt bike to the stop while not worrying about stalling the dirt bike! I always enjoy being able to help so ask any questions you have!
