Often mistakenly called smocking, shirring is a technique that creates stretchy fabric out of non-stretch fabric, by sewing rows of straight-stitches onto fabric using elastic thread in the bobbin! It's a really popular technique in fashion right now, and if you're anything like me, once you start shirring you'll become just as obsessed with it as I am and want to SHIRR EVERYTHING. Where was this tutorial when i was learning to shirr oh lord. If it helps anyone else, the problem i had was that the elastic was too thick (hemline 0.75mm) so it kept popping out of the groove that gave it tension

That's what I used to think shirring was too! I'd examine the fabric closely, and it really looked like they had literally stitched this ridiculously thin elastic onto the wrong side of the fabric. I was so baffled as to how they got the machine to do that. Lol, now this tutorial has made me an expert compared to how far off I was then!

I paid 20 for a pair of handmade boxers when I first moved to a big city because I was at an artistian market and lingered at that booth for too long and the shopkeep was cursing me with her eyes and I knew I'd be doomed if I didn't buy something. Once I've mastered shirring, I can make my own shitty 20 boxers. Take that, evil shopkeep.

I had said I was going to try some shirring and I did! It was fun but at the beginning was a bit like learning to use a sewing machine all over again. My main problem now is getting my tension back where it should be. I had to turn my top tension all the way to 9! (I have a Brother PC-210 PRW if anyone’s interested in knowing the model.) And now I can’t seem to get the tension right again. A fried who was a former professional costumer said that what I should do is turn all the tensions back to zero and then adjust up until I find the sweet spot. Also, I found I had to stretch my elastic thread a bit while winding. And my machine top loads bobbins and it really really didn’t like the first few stitches sewn with that elastic thread. I think it has to do with how the bobbin thread threads up through the machine.
@slaveNo-4028
@slaveNo-4028 3 года назад
if you adjust the bobbin tension, get a permanent marker first and mark where the screws' original grooves were so you find the original spot again

Very interesting! Never realised that the elastic thread might be able to backstitch... I tediously tied off each of the rows the one time I attempted this... Also +1 that you don't need a fancy machine to shir well -- had a bunch of luck doing this as a beginner on a basic mechanical machine and never realised that there was so much to learn on this technique!

I literally watched this once and it worked like a charm! One downside is that my planned waistband came out about 25% too small to reinsert into the dress so I will cut the ring in half and use it as sleeve cuffs. Still, I think I need to watch again to see if you covered the ratio of raw fabric to final product. Thank you!

I have to be crafty about what I sew. I've been making tote bags and upcycling clothes lately. Its been fun. Its amazing what you can do with a mans button up shirt. I had to increase the tension on my bobbin to make shirring work on my machine. My tips for it are: 1. Be gentle with the tiny screw! There's usually a bit of wax (paint?) That's been dotted onto the screw to keep it from turning. It can be helpful to poke at it with a needle to break it up a little so you don't have to use a lot of force to turn the screw. 2. Turn the screw 1/4 turn at a time, sewing a test swatch in between turns. Every machine is different so you won't know how much the bobbin needs to be tightened without testing. 3. Remember how much you tightened it. And by remember I mean WRITE IT DOWN. Who are you kidding, you're not going to remember. Just make a note that you tightened the bobbin (clockwise turn) and how much you turned it. 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn, 3/4 turn, whatever it is. Stick the note to your machine, and if you forget to turn the screw back, you'll have a little reminder of what's going on when your next project is turning out wrong.
@AnnikaVictoria24

winterinbloom great tips - thank you!
@sadmac356
@sadmac356 5 лет назад
I'd probably end up drawing a line on it and making a note of which way I'm turning it before I start messing with the tension, and then reset it by turning it the other way until the marks line up. But that's just my two cents, having never adjusted bobbin tension.
@winterinbloom
@winterinbloom 5 лет назад
@@sadmac356 That's a good idea! On mine the paint they'd put on it didn't entirely come off the bobbin or the top half of the little screw, but if it does marking it would be very smart.

When you suddenly realize the reason of your headache is that smocking and shirring are called the same in your language and everybody seems to be fine with it, making 0 effort to dissociate it. Sometimes they're talking about one, sometimes they're talking about the other. INCLUDING IN THE FUCKING DICTIONNARY. Wait, the ONLY trace I found from somebody admitting there's a (huge) difference is a 10 word comment from 2014. Damn.

Does anyone know why my shirring doesn’t work? My farbic shrinked by like 1cm, it looks like a normal straight stitch 😭 I’ve tried everything that was mentioned in this video!

i’m using every single same technique and material, but my fabric won’t scrunch up like yours does. i’ve only done 4 rows so i don’t know if it develops as you go, but mine will barely begin to stretch, it’s acting as normal sewing without elastic thread.
