How to shoot a cinematic car video on a budget

A few weeks ago I got in touch with a client that's working in the car rental business. It was a company that rents out exclusive cars, and I had to film 18 of them for their online portfolio.
Before that, I'd never done a car shoot. But after the 18th car in a row you start to get the hang of it ;).
Here are my tips to succesfully shooting a cinematic car video. Please let me know what you think about this video, and share your project in the comments. Don't forget to like and subscribe!

Lots of good thoughts here. It would be interesting to see a video of how much different you do now. My style and technique of filming cars is way different than a few years ago. Im sure it will differ next year as well. I have one advantage I know a lot of details about a lot of cars.
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 2 года назад
yeah, my workflow certainly has changed a bit by now. Some shots in this video I still love a lot, but overall I think I would have put more emphasis on storytelling and lighting, than shooting a b-roll compilation of different camera angles en movements only. Still learning in regards of visual storytelling though.

One small tip if yall have problems with reflections and mainly film cars or reflective surfaces theres a lens filter called a polarizer it pretty much removes reflections off surfaces could be a good investment

Hi, Just a quick question 😉 How do you keep track of which shoot you need to take next i get mixed up when taking a lot of shots and i end up missing some great shots
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 5 лет назад
Great question! The easiest thing to do is to get a friend to join you on your shoot. With luxury cars this shouldn't be a problem since in return he or she will be able to ride with you and take a seat in a Ferrari for instance ;). His or her job is to make sure that you as a cinematographer take all the shots you have in mind. It's important to create a checklist beforehand, containing all the shots you are going for. It's your friends task to make sure you check all the boxes for each car. If you're alone, bring the checklist with you and before switching cars check your footage if you've got all the shots you had planned for yourself. Let me know if you did some car shoots! Always nice to watch other content creators at work.

In wich aperture do u shoot most of the time? I Want that clear and crispy shot like 0:12, i have a the Nikkor 35 mm 1.8 and Im learing to do cinematic shots
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 5 лет назад
I'm not sure on what aperture that shot has been taken. I've used an ND filter to be able to use low apertures outside without blowing out the highlights though. Looking at the background I guess it's something around F5.6 or so. Besides that, a picture with a decent amount of contrast also looks sharper imo, so I added some contrast and red in post to make to car pop. Looking at the image now, I actually think the car could even pop a bit more. The yellow logo still is a bit faded and the red has an organge-ish tint to it 😬 You can do a lot in post production!

Thank you for the tips! Which music genre you believe is best for cinematic car videos?
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 4 года назад
I think it depends on the car. When I shot classic Rolls Royces I used classical English royal music. When shooting Lamborghini I used trap/hip-hop and some future house. For a classic Ford Mustang I used rock music. I try to match the music with the type of car I shoot.

can i use the sigma lens without a booster??
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 5 лет назад
Depends on the camera you're using. I used a Panasonic camera with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount. The only way I could use the Sigma is with the speedbooster. If you've got a camera with a Canon or Nikon mount you can buy the lens for that particular mount and exclude the speedbooster.

Why picture profile did you/do you usually use??? I’m a GH5 user and still messing around with the picture profiles, haven’t found my favourite yet ahahaha.
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 4 года назад
Hi! I almost always use Cinelike D. The G80 doesn't have a lot of profiles to choose from to be honest. But I found that Cinelike D has some flexiblity to it - but can also be used to deliver content straight from camera to client.

@@DanRichardsonTV you did it all the video, to keep the subject centered when you keep moving around, you are doing it in a very stable way, you did all the shots with this technique, I wish to explain the way how you did it exactly.
@DanRichardsonTV
@DanRichardsonTV 5 лет назад
@@meroslave Those orbit shots wouldn't be that smooth without the internal stabilizer (IBIS) from the Panasonic G85. After shooting I also added some Warp Stabilizer in Adobe Premiere to make those movements as smooth as possible. That combination is pretty golden!

is it better in the sunlight or with cloud overcast for these?
@DanRichardsonTV

I'd try to shoot with cloud overcast. Also, which I didn't mention in the video, I'd shoot with a polarizing filter to cancel out reflections 👌🏽
