I get that the look of this movie isn't for everyone. It was deliberate though; they wanted a sharp, saturated look and in that they succeeded. The world of John Wick is hyper-stylized and is not meant to be a gritty, desaturated representation that is striving to look realistic. Also, I love the Vortex8; Such a great light.
Well... wow I've been following your channel for years and I was quite moved to see that you finally dedicated a video to this wonderful saga That's visually the best the industry has offered in recent years, damn... The colors, the composition, the framing, even sometimes the use of slow motion was crazy in theaters. It felt so immersive and engaging with a soundtrack that makes you feel like adrenaline has been injected into your heart! Damn, that's how you make an action movie! Thank you for dedicating this space to be able to appreciate the small details and also all the monstrous technical work and inspiration, both western and eastern, to be able to do this type of choreography. It was a great movie
I don't care for the John Wick franchise, but I like the cinematography. The main point I got from this video is that they shot at night at T4 (!) to prevent their lights "competing with the sun", and they still got clean picture. This is a complete reversal of day-for-night principle of the yore. Modern digital cameras are so sensitive!
I miss action movies that have some sort of an engaging story to come with it. It certainly looks good when a wooden 60 year-old kills hordes in close combat, but the script could be lifted from any B-movie. JW4, Extraction 2 etc just has to "look cool." I mean what's the point of the opening scene, for example? Wick on a horse in the desert chasing someone and then killing a guy who has decided to make camp in the middle of nowhere with no sunshade but with colorful things placed in the sand? It makes no sense. But hey...it looks cool.
Two reasons (both explicitly stated): 1) for his ring and 2) war against the High Table. The plot isn't that hard to follow....just a chain of cause/effect relationships.
Can you make content about Tom Cruise action/stunts? He actually does his own stunts. Keanu only does action sequences/choreography (he needs a stunt double).
It needed film cameras, using photochemical processes - because this movie looked like junk. Over-saturated and "look at meeeeee, I'm the DoP". Since when did Gun-Fu become pretentious, oh yeah, a few years ago in John Wick.
Yeah it is oversaturated, probably theyre using rgb led lights that can absolutely wreck even the best camera, you can see a lot out of gamut clipping in JW4.
So, 99% of the audience is pretentious? That's not my opinion. It is my opinion the DoP is, however. John Wick films would've been great if it was shot on a smart phone, just, the quality of the action deserved better than a DoP on a pretentious acid trip. Just because you have access to every single tool in the box, does not necessitate you use them. @@mateberg
