I haven't tried day for night for years but that was in premiere and with sky replacements for every shot. I'm probably looking back favourably but I think I got it looking as good as this, but with a lot more time into it than this. Looking forward to giving this a test. Would be good to see more shots though. To see wider shots with more environment, etc

At the clip level is best to crane your exposure using hdr wheels and then setting your gamma and color space to whatever you shot in (slog3, S gamut cine3) Then your global exposure wheel acts as changes in ISO almost like shooting in raw letting you retain more details and keep you from losing your shadows. Blaine westrop explains it better than i do, but it works for me!

One of the best ways to fake a night scene if you're going to sell 'Day for Night' is by putting lights in the scene and contrast it with day light scenes where we see the sun in the shot. Show the place in daylight and put the sun in the shot to show the contrasting tones of the environment throughout the day. Then in another shot show the same place with a car headlight or a torch or some other artificial lighting in the scene. Porch lights the light coming from the inside of the house, these things together will sell the scene.

I’d love to see a follow up video where you attempt the same shot but actually at night and crank the ISO to 12800 or higher. Wait until a full moon’s out to be your key light. Just curious to see how that’d look in comparison.

I've done this for a scene in a short film I'm editing now. I had togo back and turn off the bloom and halation for that scene though... They are both caused by bright light, it didn't make any sense to use them in a day for night shot.

day for night is not about painting the picture with blues, it's about simulating the night light correctly. is your sky correct for example? or face light? if its moon, did you ever see that kind of face light? you can keep the night without any blues, white with a bit desaturation would be even more realistic. the trick here is the light, not the color.

Additionally, night is night because of the drastic contrasts. If you are walking through your house at night it’s pitch black, and any little light sticks out incredibly. That makes it “feel” dark. The problem with most “day for night” looks, is that there are no pings of light and the image, though it “looks” like night lacks the pings of light that sell nighttime. Something to think about when filming. Additionally, moonlight is hard. And most people stick to diffused light when trying to go for moonlight. Hard light sells a lot more.

@flochfitness you guys both aren’t wrong at all, but you’re describing recreating night time. Shooting to create the nighttime look and shooting day for night are not the same thing. Day for night is always more stylized, and typically much more blue, than shooting to create the nighttime look. There have been plenty of movies that have straight up filmed during the day, and did pretty much exactly what I did, which is exactly what the day for night process is.
